Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Our doctor is saying that he could be back playing footy in 4-8 weeks.  This is obviously extremely positive news and further proof that they have caught it very early which is bloody fantastic for Jesse.

Surgery and monitoring, luckily chemotherapy not needed at this stage.

Can someone give us a rundown of the press conference?

I'm at work so can't listen to it.

Mahoney was accompanied by the club doctor.  Comments as best I could type:

  • Jesse saw club doctor last week as had a lump
  • Extremely early detection, is at a very early stage and has not spread.
  • Jesse wanted to play last weekend.  (God bless him)
  • He is in good spirits and positive about the outlook.
  • Doctor said he won't need chemo (I think that is what he said).
  • Recovery 4 to 8 weeks.

Best wishes Jesse and family.

Club saying that Jesse wanted to play on the weekend.

As an aside, I wonder whether this had any influence on the players and their ferocious desire to win the game? You would have to think they knew something serious was happening....

Just read that the prognosis is pretty positive.

Mentally though it's gotta be extremely tough especially with what he's gone through with his old man. Best of luck to him, the whole Demon and footy community wishes him all the best

Read somewhere that the players were told on Friday. I was wondering the same thing. Hopefully it keeps up!

Does anyone know the current AFL guidelines if this were to result in lowered or irregular testosterone and Jesse opted for replacement treatment? I've heard it as a topic of discussion in relation to sports previously but not sure where we're at. Also not sure if correct, but vaguely recall Alistair Lynch was prohibited from a form of hormonal steroid treatment despite it not elevating him to abnormal levels?

Good question. How do cancer pharmaceuticals conflict with sports protocols?

Guess we will know for sure if Jesse wins a Tour de France.

Jesus H [censored] Christ!! To have this on top of all of the other things that have been going on in his life is beyond cruel! He WILL beat the cancer, but even if it is a 4 to 8 week recovery period as mooted above, I hope he takes the time to make a full recovery (physically and mentally) and doesn't feel pressured to return this year. He needs to be with his family now... I just cannot even begin to imagine how they must be feeling.

One bollock can produce more than enough testosterone.

All the best to Jesse and his family.

If it is for treatment then he should be fine as you apply for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) and given it is cancer I can't see he would have any issues getting approval. A TUE allows you to take what ever you are exempt for for the period of the exemption but you can't take anything else on a whim.

In terms of follow up I would think it would be more of a grey area in terms of TUE's.

That is all really irrelevant at the minute though and he just needs to do what he needs to do. I wish Jesse all the best and support in in what ever he does from here.

Mahoney didn't say where Jesse is.  I'm hoping the surgery is in Perth so he is surrounded by his immediate family.  I read somewhere that he is the youngest of 4 by 12 years in which case he will have a few nieces and nephews.  Kids fussing over you can be very therapeutic!  Having your Mum fuss over you is also pretty special!

If there is any positive in this sad news it is that it may prompt others to be checked and more open discussions will benefit many people.

Someone already posted the main things but managed to paraphrase the main points from the press conference if you missed it.

JOSH MAHONEY

“He had an ultrasound on Wednesday that detected the cancer and a full ct scan on Thursday which detected that the cancer hadn’t spread to any other part of the body

Will have surgery today to remove the tumor

Extremely early detection, expected to make a full recovery a return to football this year

Wanted to play on the weekend but decided not to

Very positive about the outlook, it's been a tough time for Jesse, seeing a young 22-year-old mature in front of our eyes.

"All we can do as a club is offer our support, were confident he will bounce back and play some footy this year

CLUB DOCTOR: ZEESHAN ARAIN

Very early stage, hasn’t spread and will not need chemotherapy, good news for him

Purely from a physical point of view from the operation and recovery I expect 4-8 weeks, but he’s had an interrupted season so will need to asses from a conditioning point of view.

"He was very lucky, anytime anyone gets a diagnosis of cancer people feel very unlucky  but when its early stage the emotions flip around so, look it was really good that Jesse was able to come to us and we were able to follow it though so he’s very lucky from that point of view”

“When people hear cancer people get very worried but there’s a lot of different cancers, what Jarryd (Roughhead) went through is a lot different to what Jesse is going to through”

Ít’s a very curable cancer, it’s very early stage, in fact as a male if you’re going to get a cancer this is the one to get””

“He’d been a feeling a little vague discomfort and probably going through what he went through with his father, people become a little hypervigilant so in that setting it was great that he came to me.. but look, he wasn’t feeling unwell, no other symptoms other than feeling a lump”

AsChris suggests there will be exemption.

Most logically Jesse now is placed on the LTI list. He is OUT of play also. There is unlikely to be any ASADA issues nor should there be. Hardly 'enhancing'. There are often some steroids given for dealing with the Chemo. I still wouldn't think it an issue.

Jesse. Take all the time you require. Look after yourself. Cya when we cya. Til then , all the very best.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
