Culture changing win - discuss

Tonight's win represented the best team effort for a long time. No outright stars, just amazing pressure all over, against all odds. A watershed game that we may well look back on. I hop I don't put the moss on next week.

Intensity was the difference....they just pummelled Adelaide and they didn't know what to do. The confidence just grew as they realised finally to win it's not just talent but ferocity.....if they bring that every week none of us will complain. 

North next week is a watershed game as they have to kick on

As for culture change, that's been happening for a few years now. Tonight's win was a very small, albeit significant piece of that journey.

North have been beating us for as far too long, it's definitely time for us to get back at them. No doubt in my mind we should be getting it done next week but these wins need to be backed up otherwise the culture change doesn't truly happen. 

But if we make finals, I think this will definitely be the one we look back on as season defining. 4-4 looks a lot better than 3-5, it's so important we get back to positive win loss ratio next week.

Winning 2 of the next 3 (North, GC and Pies) is the absolute minimum expectation in my book.

The club has set the bar so high after a performance like that.

I hear what you are saying, but my expectation as that we play with the same intent and aggression for the next 3 games as that will take care of the result.

Plenty of doubt in mine. North has had a season a LOT like ours. Losing games they should have won. North and the Dees really have a the strongest cases to say we ought t be up in the top 4. Theyre a good side make no mistake with TWO excellent ruckman. Beating them will be a good win not just doing what we should do. But its true that, given our up and down past,  its a win we really need to start getting the respect we deserve. Win again next week and it starts to be culture defining.

Last nights win was largely about mental application. I'm not sure who first said football is played 90% above your shoulders, but they were definitely on to something. If we approach every game with that mindset from last night I have no doubt we'll win more games than we will lose and in the process make finals. The challenge for the coaches & club in general is for the standard to be set & for that application to become the norm. If we play like demons 4 quarters this side will go somewhere, it's up to them how much they really want it. We could be the next bulldogs story who knows.

Been saying for couple of weeks Adelaide were smoke and mirrors. We have shown periods we could play great footy and if we bought it along for the whole game we would win. Does not take an Einstein to work out 4Q efforts =4pts.

Second game we have won this season despite losing a key player during the game. (Smith vs Saints, Hunt vs Crows.). Almost rolled the Tigers too despite losing two players. And didnt we lose Gawn during the Geelong game?  Geez we have been unlucky.

Yes the recruitment of players who are competitive beasts is paying off.  Even last week, the Dees of old would have lost by 6-8 goals.  With some confidence we are on the move. Agree with earlier poster though, means little if we don't win 2 of next 3. Go Dees

I feel last night really reenforced my view that we are a lot better than a 4-4 side 

i personally have us ahead of the tigers, cats, saints, and so on and definitely good enough to beat the top few sides. 

Its just a matter of how quickly we stop the lapses, we still gave up six goals in a row at one point last night but we were able to turn that around in quarter. 

I am very confident if we can win say 50% minimum of the games until we get max back we can have a serious run at the finals and if we get in and have stopped the lapses to a point I think we can be a threat as well

No single thing changes culture, but often a single event can be a cataylst for culture change. John Northey changed the Dees culture and had immediate impact, but it still took him a few seasons to get the culture change as a the new normal.  

Last night's game could be a huge step on the "journey" of change, but we have had massive wins before and culture has not moved. When we see that tackling pressure every game, and play with that confidence every game, maybe culture can be recorded as changed.

One of the most overused words in football is culture.

The famous Bloods culture- BS- just propped up by other club for two decades.

Culture means the way we feed, clothe, shelter and entertain ourselves. Thats all.

Being mothers day i'm going enjoy the win for a little while longer today. 

At least this year we have all seen the improvement in the side and i am very proud of our boys.

I don't believe in watershed moments. Like Viney's performances, he's been working hard and probably an it underdone in the early games following hip surgery, but has worked himself into form. He's probably not doing much differently but just able to get cleaner ball out of the stoppages and get outside a bit more.

To me our win over Adelaide is the result of sustained pressure which breaks down if our structures or pressure from 2 or 3 players is even slightly off. We were a well drilled machine last night and it prevented Adelaide from getting its game up and running while allowing us to play ours.

Culture and line in the sand games are thrown about by commentators to create narratives around games to add interest and spice.

Behavior change takes time and reinforcement of habits. Ask anyone who has quit smoking or drinking.

Great win but anyone who thinks it will be all unicorns, sunshine and rainbows from now on with no stormy seas to traverse is kidding themselves.

If we had played like we did last night in those losses then i have no doubt we'd be 8-0.

The pressure and intensity was immense and the best i have seen in any AFL game this year. We have to bring that application every week if we are any chance of finals.

It's all about want.

You could tell the boys wanted it badly and put in a real 4 quarter effort.

The tackling and pressure was immense.

There has never been any doubt in my mind that we have very close to if not the most talented young list in the comp.

Bring that desire and work rate every week and we could achieve anything we want.

I said it before they played Richmond and a few on here hounded me. Breath on them and they fold. 

GWS is not much different. They are a pack of individuals with stars in their eyes but they're not a great team.
