Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

This club has become a master at TALKING about what we should be doing but when it comes to actually DOING it well that's another story.

It's pathetic and I'm sick of hearing anything that comes out of the coach and players.

JUST        F A R K I N G      DO IT.

Your constant whining and moaning after every game, you seem to feel the need to find something, so I stopped reading your posts, suggest you do the same and not listen or read anything about the Club, perhaps you will sleep better at night

Who knows his situation. Financial ability not with everyone, all the time ;)

Not usually... but in the case of someone who responds in the way that person did, quite possibly.

While I agree with this, and it can get tiresome, so can the constant negativity from some.  It works both ways.

If only we could all find that happy medium in the middle then all would be right with the world, but it will never happen.

For all the improvements (and there are many) we are still not seeing 4 Quarter efforts.

As a long time supporter and member that is all i have ever wanted since 1971

still waiting. Other Clubs seem to master it as a standard

for the MFC it is only reserved for special occasions.

Why is that?

You are so.... boring..... SWYL. Either do something about it like the bloke who cut up his membership or try and discuss something different.

Only sensible I guess to look at the ladder leaders as the current benchmark.  I'd argue that a consistent 4 quarter effort is much harder to achieve than what we might be demanding.  As to why, I'm not sure.  That being said, regarding Adelaide:

Round 1 - down by 14 at quarter time (won by 56)
Round 2 - down by 24 at quarter time (won by 24)
Round 3 - down by 9 at quarter time (won by 17)
Round 4 - clicked for 4 quarters and smashed Essendon
Round 5 - similar to above and smashed Gold Coast
Round 6 - down by 9 at quarter time (won by 76)
Round 7 - down by 64 at quarter time (lost by 59)

Good point....despite our lack of points, we are playing our best footy in ten years.

I understand his frustration of selection and the exclusion of some but it is Goody's first year and he needs to be cut some slack. I liked his no excuses review of last weeks game. I think the recruitment over the last 4 years has been excellent.

Man I hope we surprise everyone and beat the crows.

Right, so now JKH's name is splattered all over the Herald Sun.  It is disgraceful.

Ox has a lot to answer for reading out his name as has SEN for distributing the letter with JKH (and other names) name not deleted.  Ditto the HS.

I'll repeat what I said yesterday.  Its one thing for Ox and Lyon to criticise the club we love, the club that made them great but I don't like the way they sink the boots in.  I don't hear T Watson, Lloyd, Carey, Darcy etc sink the boots in to their old clubs or naming young players when they have a bad run - they are able to criticise without the resultant headlines attracting ridicule to their clubs or players.

Just when we were on the verge of getting some respect back we become the media's punching bag again.  Sadly it has been our own hero's leading the charge.

Ok...I like good healthy debate as many of us do on here.

Before I go on & make some points let me say this. I've read through here and am in total agreement with 'Hardtack' and am totally disgusted with the way one of our players has been hung out to dry.

I also think a lot of supporters and I use the term loosely need to calm down and make a logical assessment of where we are...

I've been critical of some of things Goodwin has done and like others think we probably over use the ball. Our skill level is not good enough yet for the game style.

I do think we have issues with the list but I'm pretty sure those in charge understand & will work to fix it, we have what we have for season 2017.

A few of things keep coming to mind though.

1. I think Goodwin's working well with what he has. How he manipulated the situation with EFC was masterful coaching. How we ran over the Saints, similar.

2. We've been in every game we've played, probably the only team to do so this season which means we are more consistent than we get credit for. Yes, I would like a better win loss record & I get p....off too. We all seem to agree our defence is not great but somehow we manage to stay in games. The coach must be doing something right.

3. The big one that keeps coming back to me though is Clarkson's situation early days at Hawthorn. I remember the complaints at the time from fans and so called experts in the media about the game style, lack of skill & how they mucked around to much with the pill. So I went back & cut some quotes from articles about that time...season 2006. The part comment in bold probably sums things up pretty well.

.....Clarkson implemented clear ball movement patterns and structures during his first two seasons, but wins were limited because his team did not have the experience or skill level to carry them out........

......Dunstall said calls for Clarkson's head were reflective of the emotion that accompanied roller-coaster performances.

"After week one (when Hawthorn beat Fremantle), I was approached by people saying, 'Why hasn't the coach been re-signed?' After week two and a bad loss, they are asking, 'Does he know what he's doing?' That's how fickle the game is."

According to Dunstall, the league's most inexperienced coach will not be affected by the criticism.

"He'll hear it and it might be a little bit of baggage he carries outside the club, but he'll cope very well with that," Dunstall said......

......The Hawks stated a mid-season review would settle the future of their coach in 2006 as they decided to extend Clarkson's contract. Bookies at the time questioned what right he still had being head coach of a footy club. They finished the season well (won their last 4) but those 9 games that they won in 2006 (5 in 2005) were against Carlton twice, Essendon twice, and a pathetic Geelong twice with the other three wins coming at 'defacto Glenferrie' Aurora Stadium, Tasmania.

He was pilloried for having an awful gameplan, based on this nonsense of over-possession that was seen as the latest fad. He stuck to his gameplan and overhauled the list to get players to the club that could handball and run and carry the football....

Sunday was the first game 'we' didn't lose, but the opposition won. A team with 15 (1,2,3or4) premiership players who have played together for 6-10 yrs & who got their Mojo back(Lewis & Hibberd have played together twice!) Against the best coach of the modern era vs a 7 game coach. With major injuries to important players (Was it 41 touches plus a goal for Gawn last year against the Hawks?). We were still in it after not showing up for half!

The injuries have exposed our lack of depth and the fact we need one more yearly list turnover! As Jones said today the positive is that in addition to our new game style which has us up in the top KPI's, we have learnt to play differently, we have challenged players in roles that they may have not played otherwise & hence have made changes through necessity that will be of use in the future as it finally all comes together. When we finally get our 'best' 22 on the park.

As frustrating as it is our best 22 are still being worked out = rollercoaster = Selection issues/mistakes. Our best football will be in the second half of the year.

Unfortunately 'Lucifer' whilst both were good players they are very average analysts of the game.

Lyon reminds me of a modern day Don Scott...Don was always on about being hard, tough and bleeding for the jumper.

That was pretty much the extent of his game day analysis and I don't hear much more than that coming from Gary.

I find Ox entertaining in small doses but definitely don't consider him one of the games big thinkers, but now he's lost me with this.

It's funny when a Richmond supporter microwaves his membership but apart from the card there were no players caught out as collateral damage...

He's made a mistake and I hope he apologises for it. It's the least he can do.

I like most of us share the frustration. This year seems to be worse than quite a few of the past decade. In my case it's because I finally had an expectation that we would be better and be legitimately challenging for finals. I realised after the Freo game that expectation wasn't justified. Since then I've let go and it helps a "little bit".

One of my frustrations like many others is the selection decisions this year. Giving so many games to players who haven't contributed and have had to be carried. We have been lucky to field a team with less than 3 non contributors this season. But there could be a good explanation for that. It could be that Goody and Macca are choosing to coach and develop for the long term and not just to make finals this year. There are players like Weid who will be the future of the team and need games if they are to develop. IMO he played him for too many and Pedo should have been in earlier but that's part of the challenge. You could argue it's gutsy coaching. The fact is we don't have a competitive 22 yet. Goody has to find the last 6 or so players to fill in the gaps and he has to do that this year. No point in waiting til next year.

He also had a go at Hannan, Viney, Jones, Tyson, and Tom McDonald.

I feel sorry for JKH, and I agree, SEN should've blacked out his name.

Having said that, Goodwin's decision to play him 3 straight games without any influence whatsoever did seem a bit strange. He was almost a sitting duck for this form of criticism, and if wasn't done by a fan (or anyone on this site), then even those in the media who normally stray away from targeting young players* would've been tempted.

*Jack Watts the exception who started getting criticised by the game's greatest ever player (Leigh Matthews) at the age of 18.

Regarding Matthews. You must have said that with tongue in cheek. Game's dirtiest player more like it.

Many of the sentiments are often affirmed or debated here on Demonland. But to do that to JKH is intentional, high contact, and behind the play. If the author is a member they should be banned for life for belittling a player - any player - so publicly. And blaming so much on Goodwin - misguided rage in my opinion. It  is either the ramblings of a complete lunatic, the straw that broke the camel's back from a long-suffering Dees fan, or the calculated swing at Goodwin whom the author hates for some past indescretion.

Unlike others on Demonland, I am a huge fan of the Ox and love his "don't take me too seriously" style on radio,  but to be the one who brings it into the light and to aclso then decide to INCLUDE JKH'S name is a really, really  poor effort. Not too sure what to make of it, and it makes me feel uncomfortable. I wanted JKH dropped and also consider his current ability to be below AFL standard, but now I want him in the team versus Adelaide to give him a chance to tear the game apart and shove it right up the Ox.

David Schwarz is not very smart and it shows - The Run Home with Mark Allen and Schwarz - unlistenable.

Garry Lyon never stood up to be counted in coaching when he had the opportunity - no credibility.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
