True, although I thought that was quite effective. 

He competed so strongly in the air, even out of position.

I think we're in a good position. I think Spargo could potentially play ANB's role but off the back of only one game I'm not sure. ANB puts a lot of pressure on the opposition and works hard at positioning off the ball. I don't think he's going to be dropped. I agree with some of the whacks on Tyson here but again don't think he will be dropped. Not until Brayshaw takes the next step and we have a healthy Viney. There's just not someone else I would put in right at this moment that would play a different or similar role to trump him.

If anyone is to be dropped before ANB it will be Vince he's had an ordinary year.

I'd play Stretch more but he got 1 chance in a huge pressure game and wasn't up to it. After him who else do we have for the wing? Lewis in on the other wing and he's just as poorly suited to it as Tyson is. Oskar Baker almost certainly isn't ready. Fritsch should be one day but he doesn't have the endurance and will tire and make simple mistakes. Spargo maybe, but that's asking a lot of a young body and no good if the opposition have a pair of 6'3 wingmen. 

The preseason plan was for Jones and Harmes. They were the starting wings in a lot of training drills. Lewis was half back. Tyson rotated in. Viney's injury and Petracca's form/fitness has forced Jones back inside and Harmes wasn't really working and been needed forward/ruck and is another player better on ball than wing anyway. I don't like Tyson on a wing but I'll live with it until we have other mature midfielders to push him out.

Tyson could possibly be best played off the bench in an almost regular role from that source - and fitted into the midfield when our better players might tire.

Tyson is still a good ball-winner in a crush. No doubt about that - so what is needed at the coaching level are a few disposal sessions - hand and foot - with specialist coaches of whom there are plenty. His disposals need immediate and perhaps, longer-term improvements to actually hit a target at varying lengths - surely we have the capabilities to bring these remediations to his (and others') games? Professional sportsmen need professional coaching to be applied with regularity.

Why do people keep making these sort of comments? I suspect the match committee picks the side based on players and the role they are expected to play, not the best 22 available players. If Vince goes out, someone will be picked who can replace him in defence; if ANB goes out, he'll be replaced by someone who can play forward and onball. That means the player who replaces Vince would not be the same player who might replace ANB. Hence, there is no relationship between whether ANB goes out before or after Vince, or at all (and vice versa).

It is all about regaining form and both have different timeframes in this regard. There is a difference and their independent roles for the team do have overlapping relationships in the progress of the ball and in metreage outcomes. Then again, maybe I am not reading your statement terribly clearly in the first place and if so, apologies.

I'd much prefer Vince in the side, because he plays his role, and doesn't play like he's collecting a retiremen check. 

he's been far more reliable and general like this year than he has in previous. Dare I say this has been his most consistent year since he joined us.

I'd suggest Harmes is part of our future strengths but it strikes me so far in his footballing history that he acts too quickly in some things as Watts used to do - making a series of poor decisions in his execution of skills. He has terrific physical attributes in which 'panic' is often on override....

There are a handful of positional changes I'd make to our side at the moment. One would be Harmes to take Tyson's position on the wing. He is quicker than Tyson, has more versatility to his game and uses the ball better. In the future, I'd want to target a hard running wingman to play that position.

At half-forward, I'd have a number of players ahead of ANB. For one, I'd bring Garlett back in and push Spargo up to a half-forward. In one game, he showed he has more ability than ANB has for the entirety of his career.

Going hard at a wingman, I definitely agree with that. Gaff looms as the logical target and I think our inactivity to solve the problem last year was to not pay overs for a stop gap and then lose the flexibility of going hard for Gaff. Heck I'd be on the lookout for 2. One to replace Lewis and one to replace Tyson. 

I can't have Garlett in the team until he shows he wants the ball. Insipid efforts at the contest and even refusing to go get the ball when 5m clear of an opponent. Yes, a good small forward deep and moving Spargo up makes sense. I can live with ANB until Jeff shows a better endeavour, don't want to rush Spargo in to too much either.

The coaches went with Harmes on a wing at the start of the year but he's too keen to get in to the contest. Physically he can run the wing but Tyson is probably more disciplined and smarter at keeping space. Harmes is best used where his desire to compete is harnessed in a defensive role, be it as a defensive forward, a defensive inside mid (not a tagger so much but someone who can run contest to contest and tackle) as he was on the weekend or even as a combative backman. Viney coming back and no further injuries probably means Harmes competes with Tyson for a wing spot. I'm just not convinced that will be a long term answer either.

Probably, but he has to build his engine and that is most likely why he plays even when out of form. So the coaches are trying to get him up to higher standard which is exactly what we need/want ???

I'd play Jeffy and Tyson in that team. I'd look at someone like Spargo or Baker instead of Vince. We will get exposed on the MCG playing Vince and Lewis every week.

So frustrating to watch.

The amount of times it's just so apparent that a handball is on and he ignores it to try and find a better one and in doing so is caught holding the ball is staggering. JUST GIVE IT.

 

He's a good player, who is clean and has good positioning around the field, but has clear limitations with the one I mentioned above, shaky kicking and severe lack of pace. He needs to play inside mid or at Casey.

It’s unbelievable.

And what’s more unbelievable is that there are posters who believe he seems to have ‘Pendlebury-like’ time with ball in hand.

He gets caught in that scenario so often. The ball either bobbles out to the opposition or he is pinged holding the ball. The fact he is so one-sided only makes matters worse as he never wants to dispose of the ball with his right foot or right hand in those situations.

I fully agree with this comment but sometimes slowing down is exactly what we need to do, unfortunately both Lewis and Vince have lost top gear which is understandable at their age. Neither will be dropped until Oliver, Trac and co. can sure the maturity required to slow the game down when required IMHO
