Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Angus Brayshaw Concussion Issues

I have read a lot of stuff in the Casey thread about Gus's latest Headknock.

I think this deserves its own thread.

In previous threads I have seriuosly questioned whether Gus should go on.

I do not do this lightly. My son's footy career is finished with a series of injuries not Concusion related but in his early twenties that's it. I am not pleased that his career is over but glad his body doesnt have to put up with any more trauma!

As a Father, Supporter and Member, I would seriously have the question the long term effects and want Cast Iron guarantess that Gus will not have any short term or long term effects from the "Battery" of concusions he has now had by playing on.

After seeing the Will Smith movie "Concussion" If you havent seen it do yourself a favour and go watch it. It is based on TRUE U.S story about many Gridiron players suffering long term effects from repeated head knocks. And remember these guys wear helmets!

Remembering Daniel Bell and others, I spose you do want to give the boy every chance and I hope I'm not overreacting and yes, I know the club will be ultra cautious and put his health first but at the end of the day.if he was my son.....

It's a shame he has copped another knock and will just have to wait and see how it plays out, if the doctors give him the ok well the decision to keep going will be upto him, I hope he gets back and reaches his potential but unfortunately the AFL is full of hard luck stories with players  who are just flat out unlucky and it's looking like this could be 1 of those stories

Should Brayshaw and the club be looking at preventive measures ie, helmet

I don't think helmets do much, someone else might know more but I'm pretty sure if you get hit hard enough a helmet wont make any difference

Helmets are only useful for preventing skull fractures and cuts, this is why helmets do nothing for concussion:

Is it the way he plays?

Do opposition target him?

Is he susceptible to concussion from moderate head-knocks?

Lots of variables for our medical staff to consider but there is no doubt that in this day and age, they take the ultra-cautious path - and so they should.

It makes me think just how much this must affect a young players burgeoning career.

I've heard it said that sometimes helmets can have a reverse effect, in that they can give the wearer a false sense of security so they take higher/more risks. Can't remember if this theory was for sports people or gen population cyclists.

But is is widely accepted that helmets help prevent cuts and skull fractures but not concussion.

Correct.

But Helmets actually increase the Surface Area of potential damage...

I'm probably thinking what many are thinking.

There's more to life than Footy Gus.

Yep. There's a saying in the NFL "see what you hit" but the facts are you tend to lead with the head when you're wearing a helmet. Which leads to way more head (and neck) injuries.

It's bad luck for Gus. We were ultra cautious with Nev, let's hope we do the same with Gus and he comes out the other side just as well as Nev has.

If not, there's more to life than football.

Then the people in the know said he should for next week

He was one of the best young footballers of his draft year.  He has shown plenty of promise, but has had a few 'bumps' on his road.  Many young players suffer injuries, but make it,

I wish Gus all the best - to get over this, apparently small, setback; and for being able to deliver his best football to help the Dees create something special.  He was sent back to Casey for a reason, so I hope he can get back and leave no doubt he should be in the firsts.

I hope he's ok and has a long successful career with the Dees. If the medical staff recommended he needs time off to reduce further risk then that's what happens. Helmets won't help prevent further concussion and I'm not sure it's the way he plays either. It's hard to nail down why it keeps happening but I hope he's ok.

Is it the way he plays? Didn't we at one stage have to remodel Viney's body-positioning or approach to packs or tackles or something?

Is he susceptible to concussions from moderate head-knocks? I'm scratching my brain trying to come up with an ethical way to test for this.

I have never stopped to think exactly what happens in a concussion. If that image is accurate it is scary.  I can see why it can do serious long term damage, why some retire early and why head high contact is now taken more seriously than ever. Might watch a video on concussion and get educated.

Does former Board member, Peter Dohrman, still post here?  I know he used to

Emminent neurosurgeon - I am sure he could offer a far more expert opinion not necessarily on Gus but on modern management and disgnosis of concussion than anyone else here.

Usually taken seriously, but I suspect the Pedo and Col Sylvia may beg to differ.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
