I have been really happy with Goody thus far but my one worry was whether or not he was prepared to be flexible in terms of the way we played and in adjusting to the strengths of the opposition.  In his press conferences he regularly mentions “playing the way we want to play” and when asked about opposition stars like Dangerfield, Martin etc trots out the “we’ll back our mids to go head to head” line.  Whilst I’m comfortable with that for the most part, because we do have to establish our brand and give the players confidence to back themselves in,  I do think there are times when you need to adjust.  He did this brilliantly on the weekend – the Vince tag was an example and perhaps an obvious move but his move of TMac to the forward line was a game changer.  I was a bit perplexed when I first saw it as I thought it would leave our defence horribly exposed but because we were winning the ball, it didn’t – and not only did TMac kick a couple, he set up at least another two as a valuable target.  His decision making isn’t as big an issue in the forward line!  Goody is willing to take a risk to change things up – the move of Hunt the week before also changed the momentum.  I’ve also noticed that we are not getting nearly as many goals kicked out the back against us as we were in earlier rounds, so he’s adjusted defensively as well.

 

I was already pretty happy with Goody before this game but did have a couple of small reservations. Those reservations have gone after this week.  We’ve got ourselves a gem.

Playing devil's advocate just for a second, I think it's worth pointing out that a lot of what we saw on the weekend was great because it worked. ANB and Hannan in (which noone saw coming) for round 1 was a great move. Took away Saints rebound. Round 8, made some fascinating and daring choices both at selection and on field. And you couldn't conceive of better results than what we got.... But... He made similar choices that didn't pan out earlier in the year. He copped it for JKH. Actually selecting him at all seemed left-field. And let's call a spade a spade. It didn't work.

I think so far he's had about as much good luck with these selections as he's had bad. What's great, as you say, is that he's making them. Putting himself on the line. That's great.

My area of concern is now NOT match day. In the breaks between quarters he's shown he can move the magnets around. Teams and opposition coaches are going to have a tough time countering him now, let alone the 22 he fields.

The thing I'm keen to see unfold is how he teaches players. Roos was amazing with teaching kids. He made a good defense out of no name players. He did it so well that now Collingwood's best defender by a mile is a guy we didn't really feel like paying to keep. Goodie has come in, and it's clear to many he's focussed on attack, run, handball, and defensive forwards. I think he's largely left the defense as it was under Roosy. After all, you would, wouldn't you.

I want to see what happens in 3 years when Roos' impact is lessened or completely gone. He might have even worked through a handful of defensive coordinators like the NFL do. Maybe he overcompensates by trading our next two first rounders for Lever, or something like that. In any case, until that happens, we won't know whether this gem we have will offer the sustained good stuff that a Clarko does. I'm pumped. MFC has never been more intriguing to watch.

I like the fact that he is a clear and concise communicator. He says in very few words what wafflers like Buckley or Chris Scott take an eternity to get out.

How good is that. The old Denis Pagan "Always look like you're catching a bus" thing. If you go back and watch the Dons game when the demons and them turned the ball over 6 times in a row, he was on the phone and he just pauses and his eyebrows go up. He must have been tense, but he didn't show it.

I personally think we have close to the league's best coach on our hands. Innovative, confident, competitive, patient and supportive with his ego focused in the right place. Apparently an absolute student of the game and has arguably seen the most playing success of any current coach (for whatever it counts). Chosen by Viney and endorsed by Roos after their first confab. I was disappointed at the time that Nathan Basset didn't get a look in but not any more. (Although would still love Basset aboard - Port Adelaide with Nathan as their defensive coach and an aggressive style are quietly running at least points against if it means anything).

It would be interesting to know what Stuey Dew thinks of the situation given he was apparently offered the reigns but knocked it back. He could have been the senior coach at the moment of a finals bound team rather than still being an assistant

He wasn't able to move to Melbourne for family reasons but was interested enough to catch up with roosy a couple of times

Another positive about Goodwin is that he is not a control freak. He empowers those around him including the assistant coaches and actually carries out their suggestions.

In the second quarter after ADL had kicked six in a row, he asked his assistants to make a change/changes. Hence T-Mac moved forward.

The challenges of the past 8 weeks has unearthed many positional changes & previously unknown player potentials that can positively impact our on field mix.

In past it has been rare that we have had any of these 'swing' type payers.

He's doing a great job so far, but I'd still say the title of leagues best coach remains with the guy who has won 4 flags.

Goody is making great head way though and hopefully he can get to that level one day!

I tend to watch a lot of post-match interviews with the coaches and Goodwin is by far the most interesting. Pragmatic, comes prepared with actual and relevant game analyses, treats all the reporters with respect and responds to all their questions in the same manner and best of all, always manages to slip in a quick funny that usually gets a good chuckle from the room.

Love the rapport he has with the players - it really stands out when you see him with them on the ground after the game. Don't want to lose sight of how important Roos has been in getting us to this point.

Yeah, ever since I potted him as a coach he has looked like coach of the year. Its good to be wrong sometimes.

Last week 'expert' commentators were saying it was Hardwick- go figure! 

Laughable.  Hardwick is a long way behind a few others!

You can see Goodwin the coach in our game play. The Roos defensive suffocation and contested ball system is the basis, but Goodwin's run and dash, taking risks, trusting the other players to do their bit when risks are taken - these are not the hall marks of Roos. Frosty sprinting through half back, Hunt running and flying at everything, all those 45 degrees kicks coming off half back - Goodwin's emphasis.

And it feels like Roos had the players absolute respect becasue of his experience, reputation, winning history, and the full support of Peter Jackson. But Goodwin seems to be generally liked as a human being, while being respected for what his coaching emphasises. He keeps saying that the club history is irrelevant, that the players are on their own journey, and even though I am sick of hearing it, the players love him and are fully on board.
