But I'm proud of the boys.  When Max went down we stood up and gave it everything.  Look at some of the excellent performances from guys like Hunt, Stretch and ANB.  Guys like Oliver and Petracca gave us something as well.  We did everything we could, but when you miss so many shots your luck will only last forever.

Shout out to Nathan Jones as well.  Mammoth game and further proof that he is a star of the competition.

Onwards and upwards from here.  Let's go out to the G and smash Freo next weekend.

It's obviously disappointing to kick ourselves out of it but the fact is that we bossed that game for two quarters and didn't have enough gas left in the tank to chase a game we should've already locked away. I'd much rather be in our position than the Cats at this point. This is a very exciting side we've assembled.

Jones is a star and Hunt was brilliant for most of the day, but special mention should go to Nibbler and Oliver with 8 tackles apiece. It was the defensive pressure that led to so many scoring opportunities. 

It would be quite funny if Etihad became the ground where we produce our best footy.

In the 1st quarter we kept bombing it in and their spare man just swept across taking easy marks. After that we lowered our eyes and and played on our terms and we killed them. If we have converted even half our easy missed set shots we would've been up by 5 goals at 3/4 time and likely win the game 

Hogan was a big miss though he usually plays well at Docklands and his presence was sorely missed, especially after Gawn went down and Watts had to play 1st ruck.

Watts was fantastic today, that goal he kicked from the centre square was immense and his work in the ruck was really good. He just ran out of puff in the end like a lot of our guys

Not really surprising if you take a moment to think about it

All out attack is best played indoors without the influence of the elements

Will be interesting to see how it stands up against Freo on the MCG next week. It wasn't stellar against Carlton on that ground.

Some days the players don't turn up, and the scoreboard reflects it. Today we came to play and the scoreboard reflects the total opposite. A horribly disappointing result, given the effort that was expended. I hope that is not the difference at the end of the year between playing finals and not. Jordan Lewis & Jesse Hogan - this loss is on you, as much as anyone else.

Our forward line pressure was exceptional all day, but really guys like Kent, Harmes and Neal-Bullen have no place in an AFL side when they can't kick goals from 30 metres out directly in front. Hannan is not the answer either, although his work rate lifted after half time. Smith's effort was okay, but six possessions is not a great result from so many inside 50s. I wonder where his kicks will come from when he doesn't have so many opportunities.

Weideman had another shocker, and should not be selected again until he can consistently play with the intensity required of an AFL player. Pedersen at 50% fitness would give a far better effort, and can help in the ruck as well. I don't expect Sam to be plucking marks and kicking bags of goals against Lonergan and co, but he needs to be hitting packs and making a contest.

I thought Gawn was really poor before getting injured, and Watts' effort was far superior when he took over. Unfortunately he can't be expected to do everything against multiple opponents, and our lack of talls was telling in the end. Tyson was poor, Vince the same, and Oliver, Viney and Stretch need to kick more instead of handpassing in circles. Jones was outstanding again. If only we had a few more of him. Hunt was excellent as well.

It is hard to know what to make of the defence. Geelong had so many easy forward entries because they were able to get past our wall, but our defenders were horribly out of position at times as well. On a different day Geelong might kick 15-11 and we'd have been in the contest for longer.

I expect to see a very angry side next week, that comes out and hits Freo with everything we have early. Otherwise this loss is for nothing.

He was completely lost today in every sense from where i was sitting. We were effectively a man down up forward. 

Watched him for a good 10 minutes on end at one point in the 3rd and he simply doesnt have the tank, doesnt run enough patterns/doesnt bother or consider runnIng his opponent away from the contest from time to time, doesnt present on the lead or double back often enough to create space. Unable to get seperation from his opponent very often . The list goes on.

Sorry i would love him to be ready for a big season but he simply isnt unless we are up against a so so or ordinary opponent and the rest of the team's skiiing downhill. Too raw and too many glaring weaknesses at this point. Not saying he should spend the rest of the season at Casey either but he needs to work on so many aspects of his game.  Back to the drawing for a month or two at least before giving him another look.

It has all the hallmarks of a tough game to watch - we will be the better side but Freo will look to choke the game and go defensive, much like Carlton did, and it will make things difficult for us.  Not looking forward to that at all.

It's because they make the odd mistake.  ANB made a pretty bad error in the last, yet he was sensational prior to that... but some will focus on that one mistake, as if it erases all of the good work he had done prior.

ANB had 10 tackles according to the AFL website stats.  Well on the way to being a fixture in the side now on current pace.  PF wants to hang him for that one terrible error, but it was no worse than the co-captain or Kent missing easy goals at critical times.

Thought he was reasonably solid Mr Fence, apart from starting the rot with the first set shot miss (i think!) And the brain fade backwards to Oscar . Maybe i was too far away for half the match being at city end goals and missed some unviewable (for me) ugly stuff up the other end.

And bookmark it - Geelong won't trouble the top 4. Still being held together by Dangerfield (27) and Selwood (29 years old in May). Those two have got 3 years at best. When they slow down, they'll be a bottom 4 side with their lack of midfield depth. Hawkins is also 29 this year, so their window is closing and they won't seriously challenge again with this current crop, which is great, because they give me the shits.

That just shows the narrow mindedness of the poster.  Can't see the bigger picture and only wants to focus on one error out of his 28 possessions.

If we'd won today given the lack of Gawn, the lack of Hogan and the lack of Lewis, we would be top 4 worthy. We're not top 4 worthy yet, but the progress under Goodwin seems to be steady and I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond next week.

I agree he shouldnt be hanged Nasher for one offence but from where i was sitting it was much worse than missing a set shot on goal which most others did throughout the game also not just Kent & Viney, including ANB.

Teams can handle a few misses but the debacle in front of goals today killed offany chance of winning collectively. Topped off with the equivalent of an own goal by ANB. The own goal surely outweighs the others In terms of individual horribilis IMO .

The "own goal" as you put it cost us 6 points.  Missing easy set shots costs us 5 points - and gives the opposition the ball.  Completely equivalent IMO.

Jack Watts was absolutely sensational.

He has grown to have the heart of a lion and is going into the ruck and competing hard against much bigger opponents. Who could have seen that coming a few seasons ago?

you're effectively saying a miss on goal in a soccer sense or off the cross bars etc has the same level of impact on a teams psyche as an own goal, and not an accidental one, say kicking back to the goalie and it goes through his hands etc for a horribilis own goal. 

Sorry but but i cant see how they are equal Nasher. We'll agree to disagree on that one.

Nup 10 tackles means he is second to the ball Jordy mrk2 ! Not AFL Standard IMV!

What impact did he have on the game ?? Gifting that goal was as bad as it gets!

I felt like it was a pretty even performance from our team. I'm a massive Tyson fan and felt he was a big reason for our win last week, but he was very ordinary today. Potentially, one of his worst games for the club.

Nah. If you want to dedicate the loss to anyone, it'd be to half our team who missed sitters in front of goal multiple times. Those two being out didn't impact on the result.

I think we are learning hard but valuable lessons this week. I hope the coaching staff are reiterating the lessons.

Interested to hear what Goody has to say about it, and to also see how the boys at Casey went.  We could be in for a few changes again this weekend.

Weideman's output today was about even with his first two games this season. The fact that Hogan's work rate compensates a bit of what Weideman can't offer at this stage is I guess that influence you're talking about.

Don't think I said anything of the sort, did I? 

The missed set shots are more like taking a penalty at goal with no goalie or defenders in the way and still missing (i.e. there's no soccer equivalent).  It is massively deflating and, as I said, is worth 5 less points to the team, and gives the opposition the ball.  In your ball hitting the cross-bar example, play goes on in a real hurry - there's no chance for the players to all flump and go "farrrrrk".

Soccer sucks, by the way.
