Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Only against the rules for free agents to meet with other clubs. Lever is too young to be a free agent so it's fair game. Sucks for Adelaide that they continue to lose talent. That's Dangerfield, Phil Davis, Tippett, Bock all gone when they were at their peaks or close to as players.

Don't forget Gunston as well. They've lost a load of talent.

So you would think that they'd have some wriggle room in the cap.

Why such the low-ball offer?

$300K is a huge difference.

Crows being shrewd and not placing all their eggs in one basket?

In view of how much the Media, SEN included, love us, lets assume that players, managers, etc breaking the "rules",

would be more likely a concoction, to make Adelaide and South Australian footy in general hate us to keep the trend going. A valuable weapon come Finals Games, especially to gullible maggots.....

I don't interpret it that way.

Meeting with an opposing club's officials and players as leverage to get a better deal with your current club seems a bit extreme. You can do that by simply holding off signing until you're satisfied with an offer from your current club.

Clearly he is considering a move if what's reported is true.

And if it happens, i'll be in heaven.

I interpret it that way as I'm comparing it to other sports that use the free agency model.  Often players will meet with other clubs, or their manager drops a few things in the media, to spook their current team into offering a better deal.  Obviously that is not the case with all players, but at the same time he keeps saying how happy he is over there - to me, meeting with other clubs is a tool to get the Crows to up their offer.

I'll be stoked if he signs with us as well, although I'd be very, very surprised if he's personally met with us during the season.  I'm not even sure if that's allowed.

well a long way from a done deal but we would need to give up something to get him.

Crows would be after our 1st rounder and a player of starting 22 quality.

Is he worth a top 10-20 pick and a player of say an ANB quality (who they might entertain given their lack of midfield depth).

My mate is an AFL scout, and he thinks lever is on his way. He also said that one of the guys he works with is "best mates" with lever and apparently he is coming to Melbourne for the next few weeks when he can to look at houses.

Sounds like one of those "my brothers mates dads cousin knows such and such" I realise but it seems like we couldn't be in a better spot to land him.

Rumours are fun

Depends who asks for the meeting. It may well only apply to free agents but if the player asks to meet with the club then there is no issue at any time. The rule bans the clubs from contacting the players (as in making first contact), it doesn't ban the player from talking to clubs.

I would say yes but we need to remember Lever does not always play the role of a "lock down defender" as this is mainly shared between Talia, Kelly and Hartigan. Havent said that if we got him it would make our backline a lot more reliable and make life easier for O/Mac/Frost.

I'm torn on Lever. He's a 3rd tall defender who mostly always plays loose, personally I think we are lacking a gorilla back. I also think we are a 200cm KPF short.

He would still be our best backmen though if he did come.

Edit: Actually I'll just leave it to club to decide what's best, this was all just my opinion from watching where we lack in games.

His team mate, Tom Lynch did exactly that two years ago when there was strong talk he was leaving (and if I recall the Dees were a long way down the track with him).  As soon as the Crows blinked and gave him the term and $ he wanted, he couldn't sign fast enough.

After the Crows blinked Lynch said:  “I’ve got a young family ...I’m happy to stay at the Club – the intention was always to stay here at the Adelaide Crows".

Its a game players and managers indulge.  Maybe Lever is touring a few clubs...didn't his father recently connect with the bulldogs?

To me Lever is still a young player with potential.  Yes, potential to be elite (like many other players in our team) but doesn't really have runs on the board so I'm not yet as enamoured with him as some DL's .

I would be reluctant for us to pay an 'elite' level trade value to the Crows or pay Lever an 'elite' level contract.  If the reported $850K p.a. the Bulldogs are offering is true then I would walk away from the table.  The only Dee player earning more than that would be Hogan (maybe Viney).  Lever has a lot to prove before he gets to that level in my book.

I too am reluctant to pay top $$ for him. the floating third tall type defenders can be found out

really quickly . I don't know enough about lever and don't watch enough adelaide games jut general consensus is he is a future star but Colin Garland was great for 2-3 years playing a similar role

Apparently he met with Goody, Todd Viney, Nathan Jones and Jack Viney and we've made a pretty strong pitch.

I don't get the sense this is even close to over the line but lots of people are saying our offer is as good or better than any other on the table.

Shows how good their recruiting has been in recent years, particularly given the draft penalty they got.  Have nailed the picks they've had in the teens and twenties (e.g. M Crouch, Lever, Sloane, Talia) and done superbly with the rookie list (Laird, McGovern, Cameron).  I'd have a soft spot for the crows if they weren't an Adelaide franchise with moron fans!

Done deal...

Waldron would know about brown paper bags I guess.  But, I do think that the Pies are our biggest competitors. They have some currency to offer in Scharenberg, who is an SA boy but in and out of the side having come back from two knee recos, and also have some hard nut midfield depth that might appeal to the Crows (e.g. Tom Phillips, Wills etc.)  I'd love to have Lever but am a bit worried about what we'd need to give up to get him - would be minimum first rounder (pick 11 at the moment?) and then a decent player (not a VFL type like BenKen).

That doesn't mean Lynch was always going to stay at the Crows but you also haven't provided any evidence to show that Lynch met with any other clubs. You are recalling that we were "a long way down the track with him". Please share the evidence.

It's funny that you list Hogan as elite and a player who'd command that sort of coin but not Lever.

To say that he has "potential" only at this stage means one of two things: Either you are the typical demonlander who doesn't really take notice of other players and who exaggerates our own talent pool or you just don't know a good footballer from a bad one.

Let me put it this way. If posters on demonland believe that Oscar has the potential to be one of the best Full Backs in the game, then Lever is going to go down as the greatest defender to have ever played the game and will be made immortal.

Lever is the best young defender in the league without question and to suggest he only shows potential is [censored] crazy.

It seems clear that if he leaves he is coming home to Vic. Lucifer's Hero makes a good point about Lynch ending up staying at the Crows despite many saying him leaving was a fait accompli.  So despite the loud jungle drums it its not a done deal he is leaving the crows. But jeez if you putting a bet on it you'd land on him going.

If the last point is true surely the dees would be a more attractive option than either the dogs or pies (who seem to be the other key suitors)  given we are close to our premiership window. Dogs have had their flag and will struggle to get another any time soon. Who knows how far away the pies are but they have a fair bit of rebuilding to do and the situation with Buckley and the review wouldn't make a potential recruit very comfortable.

I agree with those that say we shouldn't be paying too much above market rate. and i doubt we will, so the pies might well out bid us. We have a range of other needs, in particular at least one more mid who is an elite user of the ball and a really good second ruck option as Gawn going down exposed our vulnerability in this area (king might come good, but seems a fair way away).

But in addition to his ability to play the intercept role really well and to fit into our system i like lever's ball use. Not sure if it is elite but not far off. Also goody values flexibility and i reckon Lever with his marking ability could thrive up forward when/if needed and perhaps also as an occasional ruckman.

The Victorian’s manager, Paul Connors, four weeks ago confirmed several clubs had expressed interest in securing the 24-year-old. The Demons, with the lure of the three years Lynch sought, were reportedly a leading contender to poach the 57-game forward.

They are big claims about someone you don't know and if you think that you clearly don't read my posts very often.  If you think Lever is already elite rather than potentially elite, well we just need to agree to disagree.

Let me put it this way. If posters on demonland believe that Oscar has the potential to be one of the best Full Backs in the game, then Lever is going to go down as the greatest defender to have ever played the game and will be made immortal.   I said nothing about Oscar!!!

Lever is the best young defender in the league without question and to suggest he only shows potential is [censored] crazy.  As you are keen on evidence where is the evidence he currently commands an elite level trade or elite level contract, which after all was the point of my discussion on his future.

From what I can glean from reading all of the AFL related articles on SEN's site, they're a bunch of rumour mongering clowns who will take to print what any ex-AFL club insider (Pelchen, Waldron for example) says as gospel.

Chumps.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
