It's quite Bulldogs-2016-like with Petracca playing the Stringer role and Watts and Weideman playing the tall/mid sized options.

My confidence in Smith and Hannan comes from them looking comfortable on the training track, doing well at Casey and them being good VFL forwards who play the way we want to play. Not convinced either of them will be anything great long term (although reasonably confident Hannan has a good shot) but when our other options are:
Spencer - only if needed
Pedda - slow, old, not playing well at Casey
Go in really small - very dangerous against Henderson, Lonergan etc who can control the air.

It's like when we didn't have any decent midfield options and we started the year with someone like Magner because you knew he was going to at least have a dip.

One thing that hasn't been talked about, was that incredible chain of handball goals that ended with a Dom Tyson dribble goal around the opponent, where it may have seemed like we were of wobbly composure, but what we were really doing was seeking out the best option at each point along the chain, until dom had a clear shot on goal.

I think this style lends credence to the idea of going in small next week and not bringing in Spencer and bombing it long to the contest, which would have been negated by Harry Taylor if they play him back anyway. We can certainly use the midfield more to our advantage this week in running waves of players forward in these handball and short kick connecting chains that bring about shots on goal to Jeffy, Hannan or whoever is at the end of that chain.

If Geelong are reliant on 2 strong midfielders, then we can rely on a wave of midfielders overwhelming the cats with rapid ball movement and just getting it into that forward line for our players who have clearly shown a great ability to snap through goals on the run. More running shots from 50 wouldn't go astray either in the windless Etihad stadium.

Wiedmann and Watts should be enough to contest. Have Hannan, Garlett, Kent and Petracca crumbing. Rest Gawn in the goal square.

I tend to agree that we don't need to go overly tall for this one.  Could be an ideal time to see what Tim Smith can do, or add Kent back into the mix in place of Hogan.  Vince is an automatic selection to replace Lewis.

He took 8 contested marks that day. While he's a great mark, I doubt he's done that again since. 

Also Geelong stopped putting in a ruckman at all against North because they were being beaten by a 2nd gamer, they just roved off him. Chris Scott wouldn't comment on it on 360, so no doubt it'll be a tactical option this week. Playing Spencer would be a complete waste of time and zippy runner on the fast Etihad track.

Agree with the Tim Smith sentiment. Based on Plapp's weekend assessment,his strong mature body,marking power and accuracy at goal pick him and surprise the Cats. Elevating would help his confidence and his 'wild card' aspect could be a bonus. Hogan was hampered by an ankle on the weekend and below his best.Rest won't hurt. As suggested,Vince for Lewis and Kent for Hannan (bit stiff but clunking a few at Casey could help him). Would be tempted to swap Bugg for ANB or Harmes but 5 changes is a lot and it is Etihad.Finally,very vencouraged by Maynard's 28 touches and the coaches glowing report. One for the future!

I never take too much notice of one off games with little other evidence to support a concept.  

Spencer played the next game against West Coast and then was subsequently dropped for the next 7 weeks before making one further appearance, which happens to be the last game he's played for the club.  But yes, Hogan had come back in so Spencer became redundant.  And Gawn took his chance.

My biggest issue is that Spencer is a liability as a key forward.  I'm not interested in the JLT as evidence Spencer could work, because it's nothing more than a light intensity practice match.  Spencer is a first ruck, not a ruck/forward or forward/ruck.  He's a hopeless key forward.  I also don't like Gawn spending too many minutes as a key forward option either, because he's far better kicking goals from the ruck rather than working out from the goal square as a resting forward.

Sorry Webber, Spencer won't be selected.

Ins: Vince and Kent (and possibly Bugg to run with Dangerfield and or Selwood to allow Vince to field-marshall play a little more in the absence of Lewis).

Small forward line has to be the go. We'll see if the Trac has it In him to be Stringer v.2.

Watts, Weid, Trac, Hannan, Garlett, Kent is not an altogether bad forward line. But Gawn has to have a day out and the entire team has to play with relentless intensity for the entire game.

Small forward line will be okay at Etihad if our mids play well and we are calm and deliberate with the ball in hand i.e. our forward entries need to mirror that from the second quarter in the Saints game, not what we served up against Carlton.

It's a real pity we don't have Lewis for a while though. Having him in the side each week settles my nerves.

Does anyone else think that with our new game plan under Goodwin it actually suits Etihad more than the G'? Watching the way we played against the Saints, playing on at every opportunity, just running up the narrow ground and kicking it long really suited our style. Interesting to see how we fair against the Cats.

Hogan out and people want to bring in Spencer to play his role??? Might as well give Gawn a rest and pay JKH in the ruck. Pedo is on our list as a backup to our key forwards. Picking Spencer over him just makes no sense. If they think that Smith is ready for AFL footy then they could go with him, but Spencer? wow it would have me seriously worried if they did that.

A little, I think we will see this week when we play opposition who will compete better than the Saints did. Our defence suits Etihad because of the smaller space allows you to close down quickly in the zone but offensively I think our spread is still best suited for the G. I guess we'll see, the saints allowed us to do whatever we wanted with the ball, Geelong wont give us that luxury.

I'm intrigued as to who the Hogan replacement will be.  Do we go tall-for-tall, which presumably would be Ped or Spencer.  Or, does Goody put the pressure on Watts and Weed by making them the tall targets, then bringing in Kent to add more speed in the forward line.

Thinking about it, I would replace Hogan with Kent (if he's 100% ready to go).

Either way, I just plead to Goody to have Viney tag Selwood.  JV is playing solid without starring.  If he can keep Selwood to less than 20, and get as many himself, we will go a long way to winning this game.

I suspect you're right ProDee, but it's a bit cruel watching Spencer wither on the vine. He's in good form, at peak age for a ruckman, and just isn't getting the chances he would at any other club. The price paid for sitting behind the AA ruckman I guess. Tell me you don't imagine the Max and Jake show might just be a winner though.

It's no different to someone like Darren Jolly, who eventually moved on as he was constantly playing second fiddle to Jeff White.  Jolly got more opportunities though as he was more mobile and effective as a forward, but no matter what he did he was always going to be second best.  The same will always go for Jake, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him move on to another club at year's end.

He'd be mad not to move on. I guess the nagging thought for me is that considering Max's talents away from the ruck, how might the team go if Jake were doing 50% of the rucking whilst Max was hovering around the goals (and vice versa). Geelong have Mackie, Lonergan, Hansen and Taylor (if they play him where they should) who are all going to be dominant in the air against us if that's the way it comes in, which it sometimes will. Playing a small forward line in the hope we can use speed and precision for all our goals seems a little thin to me.
