Putting aside the cause of the injuries... Why is them playing making people assume they are non exsistant? If Viney got hit in the face with a baseball bat he would probably still front up the next week... why are you all so conserned that the carlton blokes have fronted up? Dusty is playing for Richmond as well.

Not so sure,  Carlton will run off to mummy AFL and squeal they have been set up and the AFL will investigate us for making a false medical report. The media will also be outraged of course.

I'm less annoyed about the Cripps medical report, because I agree that he might have a small hairline fracture and still be playing.

The Rowe one however is a joke. He was ok to play the game out with "concussion" because he wasn't actually concussed until "after the game"??? Yet he is fine to play this week?
A late onset of concussion should be treated with great precaution. Seems odd that he's been deemed fit to play.

There is allegedly some rule that the sports "organisation" known as the AFL have in place, whereby a concussed player cannot play or train until  they have fully recovered. And this bloke had "severe" concussion. Which would make it equal to or worse than Brayshaw's or Lumumba's.

Because the head is sacrosanct, you see. Except for when it isn't.

They must have passed medicals and we still dont know if Rowe will play yet,could be a late change.

In the end if they play or not it does not affect us and our players will be back when we face them again.

Yeah but your still looking at that through the eyes of a melbourne supporter angry at the concussion being used against us. I feel that anger too, being delayed concussion there is no way to conclusivly prove it was Hogan's slap that caused it and not any of the 100 other bumps Rowe had through the game, im fuming that anyone from the MRP could accept that as fact. But looking at the injury itself for a bit and given it was only a minor concussion. If he felt bad after the game and on monday its not unreasonable to think he could then train lightly on tuesday and thursday and then play.

it should also be noted that the (reported) symptoms rowe had after the game are not exclusive to concussion. they could have been caused by other conditions. there is currently an over-sensitivity to concussion such that nausea and vomiting are presumed now to be classified as concussion symptoms

yes i know, i'm not a doctor, but i've had nausea and/or vomiting playing football without getting a head knock

Can't believe this thread is still going.  Everyone on earth has accepted the decision and the stupid, undisciplined actions that brought it about.

If the players and club can see that what these two players did was unbelievably dumb and dangerous, DL should be able to accept that too.

Are many people arguing this, TPF39?  I think you'll find the angst surrounds the sanctions they got, which were extreme, and the sudden 'improvement' in the health of both Cripps and Rowe, especially the latter who had 'delayed concussion symptoms' but is somehow still playing this week.  No one is arguing that what they did was right, as it wasn't.

Their actions weren't good, and I think you'll find only a minority think otherwise, but that's not what most are unhappy about.

Agreed.

Both Lewis and Hogan were wrong in their actions. Both deserved a week off, but their sanctions were so severe purely on the back of medical reports that appear to be highly fabricated!

But this comes down to the utter stupidity of the actions.  It is akin to someone king-hitting someone in the street, than claiming in court that they never meant to cause serious injury.  If you punch someone in the face, off the ball, you take what you get.  Some weeks you might get lucky, some weeks you won't.  You lose any claim of being treated unfairly when punished for such dangerous and gutless action.

That is a foolish argument.  So if the penalty was to have their hands chopped off, they'd still lose any claim to be treated unfairly according your statement.  Clearly there are limits to what is unfair punishment and that is what is being discussed.  Many here argue that the MRP exceeded them this time or at least are inconsistent.  Feel free to disagree.

Perhaps the penalty isn't severe enough? People still whack opponents off the ball most weeks.

The MRP is but one arm of a wider bodied organisation that needs to be inevitably questioned/reviewed on its actions.

I don't think that they will cut off their hands, but I suppose the essence of what I'm saying is that yes, you take whatever punishment you are given when you put yourself in this situation.

Both of these events were off the ball, they were intentional and they were punches to the head.  In any other situation on earth, outside of a boxing ring, that is assault.  How much more publicity, education and warnings do people in our society need?  Neither player was squaring off against their opponents, they were unexpected punches to the face.  That's a 'coward' punch out in the 'real world'.

 

I'm furious at the players, but it seems there is more anger at the MRP than the grown men, role models and professionals that carried out the offence.

Might be a little harsher than I would have put it but in essence absolutely correct.

Players have to learn that suspensions are simply not acceptable! We have effectively lost 6 weeks in total where we do not have our best 22 on the field. That is not the way to improve from where we are coming from ... which is a rather low place !!

Why would medical professionals put there career at risk to increase penalties for two players who Carlton won't face in the sanction period?

Cripps has a fractured face, Rowe suffered delayed concussion, both incidents were off the ball, we didn't deserve any favours.

Very dumb and may cause us to miss finals.

Why? They know the risk is extremely miniscule and will never be challenged. I get sick leave certificates from my employees and many are fraudulent ones from Dr Howlong's They are legal documents yet half are fraudulent. Due to privacy issues I cannot even ask the reason or cause of illnesses. I have to accept them.

But what in it for the doctor?  The risk is that if it does get out the doctor is in serious trouble and for what?

I don't get it.  And what's in it for Carlton?  Nothing.
