And you're allowed to do that under pressure, which Picken would have put him under if he didn't STOP chasing the football and start appealing for a free kick. Let's face it though, players ALSO do it for the out of bounds rulings too. It's contentious because it's swung momentum in a key moment.

Mills is being punished for being super intelligent in recognising that he was being chased by Picken who is a lot faster than him and would've layed a disabling tackle on him if he'd gathered it.

There's worse than BT but I don't understand why he makes these calls like he did so tonight regarding Boyd.

Well, they were called the scraggers, weren't they. they proved that tonight. To Footscray there isn't rules with regard to tackling, they just grab you anywhere and anyhow during the passage of the game, and the DH umpires seem mesmerized into calling play on. Its quite amazing and only applies to them!!

Heard the end of his call on SEN tonight and he is good...probably the best going around now.

7 should be bringing him onboard as Bruce's successor.

He wasn't under pressure IMHO, but it's funny as earlier in the game a Dogs player was basically sitting on the point line with Swans swarming him and he chose to not rush it. The commentators noted it and that players are really earring on the side of caution (ie have no idea how it is going to be interpreted) with that rule so they are tending to keep the ball in play rather than rush it. 

I'd much rather seeing players trying to keep the ball in play rather than rushing point after point.

Again last night WB got all the leeway from umpires.  Frees 31 to 18.  Not only the number but where they were given - 2 or 3 frees in front of goal for Cloke and Boyd were a joke.  The commentators thought so as well.  The one against Mills was wrong - the criteria are: prior opportunity, distance from goal and pressure.  At least 2 of the 3 applied to make the Mills point legit. (One could even make a case the free should have gone against Picken for staging - he stopped running and threw his hands up claiming the free well before Mills who was running at top speed had got near the ball). 

That is at least 3 goals from frees.  Not to mention all the throws (especially Libba) not paid.  Also, Sydney were pinned for a lot of holding the ball when they had no prior opportunity, incorrect disposal when the ball fell out on being tackled or high contact.  Very few of these, if any were paid against WB.

I would simply like each game umpired equally.  Same rule interpretation for both clubs within the one game.  If the umpires can't do that the AFL should send them back too the umpires equivalent of the VFL. 

The WB have their premiership, its time the umpires were instructed to stop playing favourites!

I usually don't get bothered by most commentators but BT is starting to irritate me. Getting like Rex Hunt or that idiot Murray Walker who used to think boring race car processions were the most exciting experiences on earth. Oversells everything especially himself. Like with two minutes to go he is still hyper ventilating like the the game is still up for grabs. Does it quite often.

Good point. My aural threshold for pain from the idiot box is high but has its limits. He has upped the BS meter this season. Likely to get worse still as the season progresses. He needs to be struck down by a long term throat infection.

Brian Taylor is instructed to commentate in the "style" he uses. He is perfectly capable of calling the game properly, but Charnel 7 doesn't want that. Until peeps start complaining to the network the "delicious caressing OMG Supertar" style will remain. Sad, rediculous, and unbearable, but true.

What's even more staggering is that the appallingly biased umpiring in the GF was acknowledged publicly by Hayden Kennedy and the AFL.   My expectation for this game was that they would be on high alert and the subconscious tendency to favour the Dogs (or whatever it is) wouldn't manifest itself for this game at least.  How wrong can you be!  I'm gobsmacked and there's clearly an issue that needs to be addressed.   And for whoever it was that asked, yes Longmire did raise it in his presser, albeit in the guise of "we're clearly doing something wrong in the contest and we must change - it's our fault".

What more evidence do the umpires and the AFL need! 

Fair and even umpiring by 3 umpires within a game is the minimum standard in elite sport.  The odd mistake here and there will happen but not the obvious incompetence shown in the GF and last night.

Our game deserves better.

The umpiring is being heavily influenced by the Laws of the Game committee, or whatever they call themselves. 

The heart of footy should always be that any of the 36 on-field players can attack the ball, or the player with the ball, at any time they choose., from any direction. The rules are suppopsed to favour the player with/going for the ball. We now have no third man up at ruck contests, and having to  nominate ruckmen at ball-ups, We have the no sliding in rule that has evolved into players deliberatley taking impact below knees to recieve free kicks, and not focusing on getting the b ball. We have the ridiculous mangle of rules about how to defend near goals. No throwing the ball used to mean the hand holding the ball for a handball had to be relatively still and the ball punched off it; now you can hoik it over your head like a throw. The rules now favour the look and feel of the game rather than the ball players. I love modern footy but it has moved its emphasis away from the ball player too far.

As for the Mills free kick - he percieved presure that was not there and made an error.  But the rule is totally flawed if Picken does not have to chase, just waves nis arms in the air and gets a free kcick from the goal square.

Bit of a rant this, but it is annoying the hell out me.

The umpires are sucked in by the play on at all times philosophy of Footscray. Many times there were decisions of infringement that could have been paid against Footscray but in the interest of play on at all times the play was not interrupted. I think Footscray are instructing their on ballers, particularly, to use this to their advantage.Meanwhile the free kicks and consequent results continue in their favour.

Incidentally are there any ex Footscray players, coaches on the umpiring Tribunal?

As long as the free hand has a clenched fist and is reasonably close to the hand with the ball it seems OK to the umps. As you say the arm holding the ball should be reasonably still with a visible stop movement at the moment of contact. Now players can loop their arms quickly from knee level to above their heads before releasing the ball with no perceptible punch or stop movement to continue in the same direction.  Keep a fist closed and hands close together they can get away throwing it every time.
