Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

4 Demons in AFL Players top 50

The pre-season hype continues, with our fourth player included in this year's AFL Players top 50, a ranking voted by the players themselves.

17. Max Gawn
33. Nathan Jones
44. Jordan Lewis
50. Jack Viney

It's hard to remember any point in recent history that we've had this many players considered among the competition's best (perhaps White/Yze/Neitz/Bruce back in the early 2000s?). It's a far nicer feeling than opening up Mike Sheehan/Robbo's top 50 to find Nathan Jones buried in the "players who just missed out" section.

So far,

Essendon have 4 based on what? 2 didn't play last year and prior to that were drug cheats.

GWS 4

StKilda 2

Western Bulldogs NIL ?

Sydney NIL?

Viney should push higher if he backs up his last 2 years. Jones and Lewis are really border line top 50. Hogan can't be far off.

The players might underrate some of the dogs better players but even still it shows how well they spread the load. If it was extended out to a top 100 then you'd have to include up to a dozen dogs players. Bont, Libba, Dahlhaus, Wood, Morris, M Boyd, Picken, Macrae, JJ, Hunter etc.

Sydney must have 4 in the top 15.

Just goes to show what a (little bit) of on field success can do.

IMHO Nathan Jones has been playing at this level consistently for the last four years, yet suddenly he is now deemed to be the 33rd best player in the comp.

I actually think he was better a few years ago. he doesn't have the same impact now but that is no slight on him, it is just we have others who have stepped up to spread the load.

Only AFL players voted for the top 50 but the reporter never says how many players responded or the %'age of players from each team...so, maybe all EFC players voted and only voted for team mates!  (btw 3 from EFC were drug cheats).  Failing that one wonders what the voting AFL players were thinking.

WB fluked the Premiership (big statement I know) but they don't have that many 'stars' so not surprised to not see too many in the top 50.  And not much room for their players in the top 15.  Most likely are:  The Bonte, Stringer, Libber, Murphy...

So none of the 44, 2016 Grand Finalists are on the list (yet) and only 15 spots to go (and still need to include Kennedy (Eagles variety), Rance, Dusty, Selwood, Danger, Fyfe, Pendlebury, Ablett (?) etc).

By my reckoning that leaves a max of 8 spots for the grand finalists, 2 of which go to Buddy and Kennedy (Swans variety).  That leaves 6 spots for WB and the rest of the Swans.

My conclusion: the survey is seriously flawed!

I am not sure you can say that, because a survey of AFL players does not agree with your thinking...

I would consider a survey of Demonland would have similar issues; but not saying it would be "flawed"

My comment about the survey being flawed is not related to who I think should be in the top 50.  I don't know the players well enough.  Certainly in the 35 there are some eyebrow raisers.  But I do know who are considered champions of our game who aren't there and they can't all be in the last 15 as my earlier post showed.  Hence the conclusion the survey is flawed.

The other reason for saying it is flawed is because the authors don't give any information about the 'sample composition/participants' and without getting technical, how 'statistically representative' it is.  If its not statistically valid, conclusions cannot be drawn with a high degree of confidence.

Regardless, I'm delighted our 4 players are recognised.

I've never seen seen a team more deserving of a premiership based on finals performance. They beat the top 4 teams, and came from behind in each game. Nothing flukish about it.

Bont will be in the top 10, and is every bit a star. Dahlhaus isn't far behind him.

Imagine what his Brownlow vote count would be like, with even a 50% winning record instead of 25%.

Such is life, I'm sure he'll recover from the agony when he co-captains a drought-breaking premiership and passed the club games record, and goes down in footy folklore for all time.

We could have a scary-sized contingent in that top 50 in a year or two. But personally I'd be totally happy if we had just a few right at the top end and had ten players in the 50-100 range. I'd guess that's what's going on with the absence of Grand Final players in the list this year. Two teams with a very sharp pointy end and then a whole host of quality non-stars.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
