Has anybody seen Hogan practising his kicking for goal ? Has he got rid of his stutter ?

I filmed Hogan at goal kicking practice about 10 days back. IPhone from about 30 metres so not that clear, but the run up was definitely smother. I got the impression that he had been working at it. Under actual game day stress he might revert to his old ways, however, I reckon he and a coach or two have had a crack at simplifying it

Why, he had the yips for a while, but still kicked 41 goals, and the service into him in some games was appalling, every player will try and improve on the last year

I do find it amusing that on here Hogan has kicking issues, every forward goes through patches where they can't hit the side of a door, he will be entering his third season, fitter than ever and more experienced, we now have players who have the ability to hit him lace out, but personally don't think he will ever be the 'gorilla' in the goal square, but he will always kick his share of goals, I want a team where the goalkicking is spread around, so if he gets well held there are still other avenues to goal

Hogan's set shot routine will no doubt be something he refines over the preseason. I find it amusing that there are still punters who can't see it needs improving. He's young and kicked 40 odd goals the last two years, but his accuracy could undeniably improve in 2017 with a steady action that doesn't look like he's playing hopscotch. Not comparing their game, but if Gawn can aim to be the no 1 ruck in the comp and do it, then Hogan can refine his set shot and aim for avg 4 goals per game in 2017, and keep up his goal assist stats. Given his abundant talent and value to the team as a key forward I don't believe it unrealistic. I'm glad to hear from track watchers that his action looks much smoother this preseason. I'll be going to a few sessions over January and am eager to find out myself.

He has already kicked a bag of 7 with his hopscotch approach, I haven't noticed much difference in his kicking action although they haven't been doing a lot of goalkicking practice per se, he has probably had about 5 or 6 set shots during the drills.

They tried to alter the kicking action in  his first pre season, but he reverted back to his own method in games, will be interesting to see post Xmas as to whether he has worked on it

One bag of 7 in 2 years doesn't mean it's a good set shot routine, I went to a number of games where he missed simple goals with that action that should've given him many more bags of 7. He's not the only one who misses goals, but he's our key forward and a major KPI for him is goals kicked. When Jesse is having a set shot at goal, 'sharing the goals around' or 'goal assists' are irrelevant at that moment. He needs the best routine to kick the goal. The stuttering 2015/16 routine is not that, and it's pretty obvious to most observers.

But I'll agree to disagree and leave it there, as this is a training thread, I'll get called for derailing.

I look forward to seeing for myself in January.

Essentially he dropped from 62% in '15 (which was better than Watts that year) to 49% this year, only marginally better than Daniher. However stats only paint half the picture. His head space was visibly affected for most of the year, be it contract issues or normal second year blues. He dropped his bundle in a few games and missed some serious sodas but in my opinion to his credit he attempted to influence the game by aiming for goal assists in those same games once he realised his eye was out.

He is a serious confidence player, uses a lot of passion out there which will make him a weapon in big games. In the mean time the coaching staff need to work with what we have and develop his mental maturity to get him to that Nick Riewoldt level where he never believes he is beaten and can ignite into a game after 3 poor quarters to still turn a game.

Your KPI for him is for goals kicked, he is on par with Jack Riewoldt's first couple of years, and Jack is regarded as having a sweet kicking style, from what I have been 'hearing' and with his new aerobic fitness, can see him playing further up the ground anyway, and rotating through the middle, so goals for me are not that important, I want a spread of kickers across the whole 22

It isn't easy to hit the side of a door, it is much easier to hit the side of a barn, which of course some players can't either.

Hogan needs to practice the fluidity of his stutter. He looked at his worse when distracted by it, and what he 'should' be doing. Never seemed to have a problem with accuracy (VFL - early AFL) when left to do what came naturally. Not sure if it impacts his penetration though. That's a different story - but a lack of confidence in his distance kicking ability may be where the stutter came from in the first place.

Nope, the stutter has been there since day one, I watched with amazement (along with other players ) at his first training session when he lined up for a shot at goal, it is another myth on here that he hasn't got the distance, he has, as an avid training watcher he can kick them from anywhere.

This is still a very young guy who has had issues both physical and mental,.he will be fine, I am amused that the only people who don't rate him are MFC supporters.

He is going to be one part of a very good team going forward, if he kicks a consistent 40 or 50 goals that will do me, because hopefully we will have a few more doing the same thing, training drills are already showing me that this is what the plan is

Given time and further development Jesse will become the classic tall forward, able to play anywhere from the goal square to the midfield. His talents as a ball winner and game maker anywhere on the ground are so sublime that kicking goals from goal square marking contest, where he is consistently double and triple teamed so as to limit his influence, will be only a small part of his value to the team.

As for his goal kicking, chill. Everyone has their own routine and so long as he is balanced and in control of the ball drop and timing, he will be fine. Think of the stuttering run as a prelude to the real business - kicking the ball. 80+ goals as a key forward in his first 2 years will do me anytime. There are plenty of players whose kicking style is purity and poetry but they can't win enough of the ball. I know which one I would prefer.

As always, Saty has it right. Spread the goal kicking for best results.

I understand your preferences for a spread of goal kickers, but if Hogan only kicks a  consistent 40-50 each year he is playing below his potential. He could and hopefully will be kicking 60+ per year, with better delivery and a more grougrounattacking game plan, even with him playing further up the ground

I am amazed at the complacency of this post. Hogan has the potential to kick 100+ goals a year. He is held back by his very ordinary goal kicking. To say he does not need to practice and improve is frankly nonsense.

I think with his aerobic capacity developed to where it is now, I think he will be wasted if we play him as just a KPF (the label), although would hate to be the defender chasing him around the 50, goals will come from everybody if we develop the potential that is obviously there, so he may kick more than the 40, that is the number I would be content with
