A SAM WEIDEMAN UPDATE

The young Melbourne key forward kicked two goals on debut against Hawthorn as the Demons came away with an upset win to have supporters excited. With Jesse Hogan having recommitted to the club until the end of 2019, Melbourne will have a couple of tall targets in attack over the next few years.

According to his manager Ben Williams, Weideman will target playing about 15 games next year. Last year's No. 9 pick needs to put on weight, but that has to be gradual so he doesn't break down. An iron deficiency also made it harder for him to become heavier.

 

 

good to have goals, but he isn't ready to play 15 games IMO. build him up through Casey till hes knocking the door down.

Pretty sure I posted this in another thread, but I recall one of the commentators on trade night stating that they believed that as long as he could stay injury free, he'd be the steal of the draft at No.9.

I'm quite happy with the 3 games I've seen from him, he's showed plenty of potential for a first year key position player.

Giving up a future pick to use it on    An Undeveloped key forward was a sign of change at this club.

By picking up Weed in 2015 we have given him the time he has needed to get up to speed with the AFL game instead of picking a similar player in 2016 and throughing him to the wolves like we have in the past.

It showed in the Hawks game.

It was good. We taken a ready made mid in Oliver (who looks a star), and then selected a developing forward (quality junior with pedigree). The fact that we taken Oliver beforehand, and the fact he has been so damn good - I think has eased the expectation on the Weed. We can just let him develop in his own time. He did look good against Hawthorn, but still has some way to go (physically).

Strong debut, but he let us down in the Carlton game. Will be interesting to see his improvement in the preseason, but I wouldn't give him a spot each week yet

What a debut game to be involved in for the lad. What better way to welcome yourself onto to AFL stage than to kick your first goal with your first kick against the reigning champs. 

I really like the look of this kid, the way he moves and the way his mid seems to tick over screams footy brains, and he seems to have a pretty good set of hands and an excellent kicking technique. Give him time and muscle and I can see him and Jesse becoming an excellent partnership for years to come.
