Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Great suggestion Macca, I’m all for new suggestions and there’s definitely no harm in trying.

It’s been difficult the last few weeks trying to find standouts, this way we can concentrate on a race or two and not having to worry about scouting far and wide.

Yep,  much simpler and a lot easier too.  My favoured Trifecta multiple is 3 - 5 - 5 or 3 - 6 - 6 depending on the amount of runners in the field.  If I stick to the big feature races I usually get the winner with 3 choices but the placegetters can be tricky.  But it's not meant to be easy otherwise we'd be swimming in it.

As an example,  in the four Group 1 races on Saturday I reckon we would have come up with Unforgotten and probably Who Shot TheBarmen.  Alizee maybe? ... and we'd have probably passed on the Winx race.  The Alizee race was really tough and the 2 mile race is often a bit of a lottery.

So we might have had a go at the Oaks where the Trifecta paid nearly 1k with the 2 most fancied runners finishing 1st & 2nd.  But would we have had Miss Admiration for 3rd?  May-be if we'd used the VRC Oaks Result as a guide.

@Macca That’s where 3-4 brains working together can provide a name such as Miss Admiration. Only 3 lengths off the winner in the VRC Oaks.

Like @Wadda We Sing suggested “Working From Home” was a decent chance of winning in a post early in the day on Saturday. Made mention of some money coming in for the horse due to the wet weather.

@binman made mention that he might be having a spell for a while but if not,  his and @Wadda We Sing thoughts on this new idea would be invaluable.

We could just take it turns with picks after we agree on a race and system and away we go.  I reckon we could end up mapping out a race with our combined knowledge.

I like your idea so much that I’ve looked at the possible fields for Saturday at Randwick. I’m guessing fields will be finalised in the next couple of days but the All Aged Stakes is shaping up as a really good race.

Yep ... same thoughts D77.  The other Group1 race is a 2yo race and they are notoriously difficult to sort out at the best of times.

Trapeze Artist is very short in the All Aged Stakes but as you mentioned,  it's a top-notch field with Brave Smash out there to make amends and 'It's Somewhat' is an early acceptor.

Good old Tom Melbourne will probably be running along with a number of other chances.  Good betting races often return good exotic dividends so it looks the one.

As always,  all feedback is welcomed.

I wonder if Pounamu will be racing anytime soon?

Last winter it ran in four Group 3 races in WA from May through to July.  All 4 races were worth 150k but the connections might chase a few of the big feature races at Doomben instead.

He’s a beauty Macca. No need to black book it as I’m sure you’ll be all over it when he returns.

Placed more than half his starts at Group & Listed level, runs ok in the wet and maybe you have mentioned it previously but I wasn’t aware the horse started its career in NSW where it didn’t register a single win apart from a barrier trial. The move West certainly worked.

With Winx now occupying the top spot with regards to the best Racehorse Worldwide,  it's worth noting the 3 main rivals that she has surpassed.

2 of her rivals ran in the 'Pegasus World Cup International Stakes' (1800m) held in January at Gulfstream Park (Florida) ... the race was worth $12Million ($16Million next year) and is regarded as the richest horse race held annually.  Her other main rival ran in the recent G1 Dubai 'Turf' over 1800m.

n.b. 'The Everest' is vying for the honour of the richest horserace and that race is going to be worth $13Million this year.  It is the richest 'Turf' race worldwide.  While I'm here,  here's a link to the top 100 Group 1 races held worldwide (we fare very well on the list)

Anyway,  here's a look at Gun Runner,  West Coast,  Benbatl & Winx (today)

And our own Winx today ...

My god that race caller....we are blessed with our callers here. That guy should stick to Indy car racing.

Im sorry but this horse Gun Runner is not in the same anything as Winxxx. She would brain him.

I really love the way Winxxx comes from the back of the field as well....its like ok, ill let you guys get a head start....then ill smash you...haha

I do like the best bets. I know weve had a tough run, but it could have easily gone the other way in a lot of those races. I also multi up the place which has proved ok a few weeks. But yes im all for trying something else. Would hurt to do both perhaps? Im easy anyways, whatever suits. It will be getting into winter pretty soon and we might all have to have a spell in the paddock.

Yeah lets do both Wadda .... as always we're each free to do with the picks as we wish

So how do you feel about 'The All Aged Stakes' as a starter?  3 - 5 - 5 or 3- 6 - 6 or another configuration?

One more point on 'Alizee'  .. it is not a stop-start horse?

I've got one more week in me Macca. I forgot about the All Aged. My Autumn is sputtering a bit so a chance to go out with a good day. Me and my mate are well up this Autumn but have been scratchy the last few weeks.

That said we have avoided wipe outs (those awful days when you get no, or very few collects , which are hard to take when you put as many bets on as we do) which is critical n terms of turning a profit and when we have lost it hasn't been too bad.

Actually ended up making a profit on Saturday, which was a pleasant surprise because it most definitely wasn't a leaders track. Had to laugh though with Qulaista leading all the way in the last. Which was good because we were on it. I actually watched that before the Sydney cup and thought there was every chance we had snagged the quaddy as we had 4 good chances. Unfortunately i decided to leave WSTB out (which i almost knew would cots me as i did so).

Our bets result for the day, believe it or not was the Winx race. Was super confident in Gailo Chop running second so slammed the quinella (which remarkably paid $6.20) and stood it out second in short trif which we got a bunch of times.

Happy to give trif numbers in selected races but still think we should put our best bets up. I like to see what people have selected.

Ya ya, im fine with that race and configuration. So, do you want each person to put in their own individual trifecta using  that combo as a guide and then just select the most popular picks?

I think the first four paid 50 bucks and it was pretty much the 3 you would have picked on paper....just box them up.

Good points @binman  ... the best bets stay.  I suppose I'm always conscious of not burdening anyone with something that might turn into a chore but lets keep it going.  I still reckon we'll get 'em 'all up' soon enough! That'd be nice!

I normally will have a bet most weeks largely because I follow the Group racing both here and overseas.  It's not for everyone though and most people need a decent spell or 2.

I've had a look ahead and there are a total of 11 Group 1's & 12 Group 2 races run in the 2 months after the Sydney Auttumn Carnival finishes.  Mostly at Doomben & Morphettville.   That's quite a lot really and more than most would imagine.

After that it goes quiet until mid August but there's a stack of European & USA Group 1's  in the gap.  For those with cable we now get to see a lot of these races live but I believe the Racing channel & Racing.com now cover a lot of the big races from overseas (including the week long Royal Ascot event)

I figured we go one horse at a time - first in best dressed but in an order where once you've had a go,  you have to wait for the others to all have their pick.  If we worked on a 3 - 6 - 6 combo we'd obviously stop once we got to the 6th horse.

The first 3 horses picked would be for the win and next 3 would be for the place.

The All Aged Stakes would be my choice to kick things off.  It's a good betting race outside of the favourite Trapeze Artist.  If Trapeze doesn't win or even run a place,  the dividend could be quite healthy (depending on the final result)

Here's the all-up betting (the highlighted link above takes you to the Racenet.com form ...

Ok, but im still not sure i understand.

So for example if i were to go first, you want me to pick one horse for the winner lets say. Ok so i pick 1 Trapeze Artist. Then its over to the next person, say you Macca and you pick Brave Smash, then D77 picks Le Romain and Binman picks Hartnell. Then we have 4 to run first? So im not sure i follow.

If you're 4th then you miss out on having a win pick ... but that wouldn't bother me as I reckon you 3 blokes know what you're doing.  Maybe we could have an honour system where whoever misses out on a win pick gets first go the next time we do it.

The 4th pick could also have the 5th pick if they're quick enough.  Or maybe whoever has the 4th gets the 5th pick as well? (2nd & 3rd only)  And then the 6th pick is up for grabs.

To save time,  I'm quite happy to volunteer to go 4th pick first up.

My mates and i used to have 5 or 6 people trying to pick a quaddie....basically we let everyone pick an individual quaddie and then just made the most popular picks the actual quaddie. In other words the horses that got selected more than once ended up making the quaddie and then a few others that only got selected once got thrown in.......seemed to work ok, i think we actually got one.

Well,  as we post up our picks,  that horse is locked in and it's on to the next pick with a different horse.  We'll just have to scroll back if there is some lag time.

As an example ...

D77 gets in first on say Thursday night with Trapeze Artist - that horse is then locked in as one of our 3 winners.

Then binman gets in an hour later with Tom Melbourne (god forbid) ... good old Tom is then locked in as our 2nd win pick

And so on and so forth until we get all 6 horses nominated.

By the way,  the full dividend for a 3 - 6 - 6 combo costs $60 but you can lay any amount for any percentage you like.  Again, the choice rests with each individual.

For fields of 14 - 16 or more I often will go 3 - 6 - 6 but for lesser field numbers I would go 3 - 5 - 5 all the way down to 2 - 4 - 4.  And if it's not a good betting race it's often best to pass.  That's why it's best to discuss the race type and strategy beforehand.  Identify a race and then go for it.

Ok i see then, i guess thats fair enough unless the 4th pick is the winner !!  Im just trying to think out loud a bit to make sure each persons picks are evenly represented. But i cant really see how 4 goes into 3 any other way. Unless we do a first 4 perhaps?

Anyway, lets just try it and see how we go, we can adjust things as we go along.

That is another way to do it Wadda but I do like the idea of sticking one's neck out ... makes it a bit more fun and when it's your turn,  you're batting for the team.

You've played competitive bowls,  so it's a bit like how foursomes is played.

As previously stated,  I'm happy to go 4th first up and then I have to identify a possible placegetter (which is arguably more difficult anyway)

And keep watching as I might get in quick with the 5th pick as the sequence would be starting over again.

As you said, lets just have a go and see how it pans out.

Hi fellas.

It was your idea @Macca, more than happy for you to have a selection for the win. I’m happy to be the 4th this week or maybe we can go with an emergency system.

For example, Wadda, Macca, Binman place a selection for 1st which also goes in for 2nd and 3rd. That leaves 3 horses for 2nd and 3rd to be added, hope I’m getting this right. The same 3 people each pick a horse for the additional placegetters. If selections aren’t in say by 12.00pm on raceday in steps the emergency with their selection of a winner and additional placegetter.

I hope that makes sense, long day at work today.

Edit: Happy to run with the consensus.

In Group 1 races a horse like Trapeze Artist just has to be included but come race time we might be barracking against it such is the nature of the punt.

It's all about the money but if Trapeze salutes we'd be hoping for some value for the 2nd & 3rd placegetters.  I've seen many trifectas pay very well with the clear favourite winning.

As for Tom,  he'll almost certainly be running on especially if the jockey can find a good run for the horse.  It gets into the finish a lot of times (against good company too)

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
