Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Simon Goodwin era starts today

The Goodwin era really starts this Saturday against the Saints.

As a first year coach I think he's been a little too anxious to make his mark.

He's put it on the line and I think some of his decisions over the preseason will mean he doesn't get the honeymoon period most new coaches get.

Players and the media will be watching...

Win/Loss will be crucial early in the season otherwise pressure will mount quickly.

Good luck Simon.

I know most won't agree but I think Goodwin has made a few 1st year coach missteps to date, I will keep them to myself as I don't want to get into side issues.

Absolutely. Even if he hadn't, he will yet.

A a first year coach  (albeit with a long apprenticeship) of course he will take some false steps. Almost by definition!

Look at Steve Smith as OZ cricket captain. Has made some howlers. But you can see him learning as he goes. He's improving all the time. (But pls don't refer to the 3rd Test in Injah.)

Goodwin hasn't got an A on his report card yet. Let's see how his decisions on Watts, Spencer, Jetta, etc, etc, turn out before we condemn him to death, or deify him.

But no alarm bells going off yet, nor should there be.

The succession plan will be proved a success if he achieves more than ten wins I reckon.  He has it all ahead of him.  I like others on here have seen a few things that make me a wee bit nervous.  I don't reckon he's handled Watts right.  The co-captains idea is ridiculous.  But most of what I have seen and heard from him is just normal pre season talk/mantra.  All the conjecture and BS is over.  It's money time now for Goody and I hope he brings it.

A fascinating insight into our new coach, some new news, some things we already knew.  http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/melbourne-demons-coach-simon-goodwin-living-the-dream-despite-painful-memories-20170323-gv4y5c.html

I hope that one day when everyone is retired we learn a lot more about the transition from Roos to Goodwin.  It goes like this:  Goodwin: "I'm sure I was bloody frustrating at times but he handed over training really early and deferred to me in so many ways – list management, trade decisions – and we spoke at length about strategy and our different views. He'd always challenge me but he showed a lot of patience."  Roos explained it this way: "There were a few meetings where I'd just say: 'Mate I believe in what you're doing just go your hardest.' And he knew that.

Its easy to underestimate Roos' impact in the successful transition.  Goodwin could not have had a better teacher.

Tomorrow, Goodwin stands on his own two feet.  Hope the team give your reign a better start than the farewell game they gave Roos at Kardinia Park last year.

Good luck, Goody.  Go Dees

Just a typical true blue aussie bloke. Loves a beer, loves his mates, loves his fishing and probably still has a punt or two every now and then.

Its no wonder the players love him. Id like my coach too if he was inviting me and the boys over for a beer and a barby!

All the best Goody!

 Re Watts and the co-captaincy

Only time will tell whether they were good 'coaching' moves or not. Besides, us supporters don't know the full story or what goes on behind closed doors that led Goodwin to make his decisions.

whaddaya say we back the guy in at least until his coached a game or two?

I don't get stuck into Caro as much as most people, but her article states that Goody is the 28th Melbourne Coach when he's the 31st. Sloppy journalism.

Well it depends whether you count caretaker coaches. Wouldn't call it sloppy journalism.

Bugger the sloppy journalism    what a fantastic number to coach at.   Take your teeth out Goody and win a bag of games, its up to you

Every time I think of Barras   I think of the picture of him watching the flight of the ball after just kicking it, off the ground, arms splayed out, grin on his face and no teeth.   Go Dees

Re Watts & co-captains & picking Weid:

Don't mind him making mistakes - in fact, if he doesn't make mistakes, he's probably not doing it right.

As long as he puts his hand up when he does - like he expects the players to do - and learns from them.

The last guy who was confronted with the task of transitioning from Assistant Coach to Head Coach was constitutionally incapable of acknowledging his mistakes & learning from them. It's a tough gig.

Hope Goody's made of better stuff.

Interesting to hear Roosy's comments on Foxtel. We played the width of the ground and kicked short into the forward line. Fundamental change to game style but it left us vulnerable down the corridor when they scored easy goals on the rebound.

Couldn't we have done it last year and stopped kicking it to Jesse on three in the goal square? Still, it is a new year and we will be in the 8 for sure.

I'll back him in all day mate.  I just reckon co-captains is new age BS.  Jones is our captain.  Simple.  And I'm Watts's biggest fan.

Possible emerging trend after two rounds.

First round, quarter time, when it looked like unravelling. Goodwin got them reset and back on the job.

Second round, three quarter time. Same thing.

Whether mental or gameplan, in previous years once the tone of the day was set, it stayed that way.

This is a pleasant new experience. Although I don't want too many games where Goodwin needs to "change the tone".

Happy the footy is in his hands,

He has a a funny way about him in interviews. Sort of over practised. A bit stiff or uncomfotable with lots of repittive messages, for example he loves the word journey.

But ut is endearing. He often seems to be about to start laughing. And he did when asked about the relevance of last years shelacking by the cats having batted away the same sort of questions the previous two weeks. No relevance.chaps

It's been a similar trend through the JLT games this year and the pre-season games last year.

Play well, get challenged, tweak things, get the result.

Many decry Brad Scott for what he's done at north.

Many acclaim what Chris Scott has done at geelong.

Watch Goody eclipse both of them today in 3 games !

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
