Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Dockers want Jake Spencer

Apologize if there is already a thread for this, but couldn't see it. Anyone else notice the article on the AFL website stating despite him being contract, Freo and trying to lure Jake the snake?

Given he's contracted and our lack of ruck depth i can't see it happening, but if the offer were to good to refuse i guess we'd have to consider it.

Article is big men set for big moves. Sorry i couldn't get a link working.

Looks like it has been changed.

Probably a typical article consisting of rumours fabricated by the author, and they didn't know at first that Jake was contracted, so tweaked things once realised.

Standard rubbish not worth the Internet paper it's not printed on.

Yep, has certainly been changed.

Nothing to see here i guess.

It certainly does sound like premature speculation on the part of the author.

Nevertheless, nothing would surprise during the trade period and with some clubs desperate to build on their ruck stocks, it's not inconceivable that someone might make a play for Jake over the next month.

Other articles state we are looking at acquiring another young developing ruckman, so get rid of one and bring in another who will take a couple of years?

They do take a while to develop but we would be on the look out for young ruckmen to develop in the shadow of Max who is going to be around for a while. Perhaps Jake who will be 27 by the start of next year, is not quite right for our needs going forward in comparison to a 22/3 year old ruck?

That might allow us to get involved in trading for another midfielder to bolster our stocks which, despite our promising young brigade, were exposed in the last couple of rounds.

"Jake the Snake Roberts" sensational wrestler now departed would have been a great pick up! Ah Sorry, do you mean Jake Spencer?? For real??

Damn, I was hoping it was true. I thought we could do a straight swap Fyfe for Spencer.

If Spencer has trade currency, it would make perfect sense to offload him. Offers little at AFL level.

And who do we have as backup for Gawn next year, Mitch King coming back from an ACL?, Max King who seems to be on the delisting list, or do we trade one in?

As WJ said, draft or trade in someone in their early 20's who has some upside to potentially play as a Forward/Ruckman. Spencer's ceiling is very low, and I doubt that he'll improve.

A satisfactory ruck list would look something like this:

1 x Senior ruckman
1-2 x 21-22 year old ruckmen half developed, can fill in for the senior ruckman in case of injury
1 x junior ruckman

If you exclude Spencer, ours looks like this:

1 x Senior ruckman
1 x Junior ruckman who injured an ACL in round one of the VFL, so is back to square one next season
1 x Project who fell away badly and will probably be delisted

The problem is that that we've got no "nearly ready" ruckmen in that middle class, and they're going to be hard to find - who's going to let go a young ruckman they've invested a lot of time in, and what's their incentive to come here?

Spencer's replacement needed to come from the draft 3 years ago.  Now we're stuck with him until Mitch King can complete a few years of his apprenticeship, because otherwise the risk is too great.  We should really be looking at a ruckman in the draft.

Ironically, it was at around that time when we tried to draft Jack Hannath in the PSD but were gazumped by the Dockers.

My thoughts are that since there are clubs out there who through retirements and/or injuries have a pressing need for a mature ruckman, there might be a chance that we could benefit by a trade of Spencer while at the same time sourcing a young big man in that 22/23 age group who might be close to ready and can act as Gawn's understudy and also possibly add something to our forward line. In addition, I would be thinking in terms of drafting Oscar McInerney who is also around that age and is clearly preferred at Casey over Max King ATM.

In any event, the laws of demand and supply operate and if Spencer's trade value has gone up as a result of those injuries to Nic Nat and Ceglar and the imminent end to Sandlilands' career at Freo, then we could decide to take advantage.

Agree.

Only a forward/ruck would come if they were promised every opportunity to get game-time.

A genuine ruckman with aspirations would have grave misgivings about coming to a team loaded with the reigning AA.

I think you are forgetting that Watts has been taking turns in the ruck, he actually enjoys it, I asked him, with a bit more work during the pre season on the craft, he could provide a handy backup to either Gawn or Spencer

I have to admit I'd never heard of him until following the Casey feed yesterday.  Pretty interesting selection in a final with an already pretty tall Casey side - must have shown something.  Listed as 203cm and 100kg so he's probably physically ready.  Any idea why he'd been playing in the dev league for the bulk of the season?

I don't care if Watts enjoys playing in the ruck, because he's not a long term solution.

I brought up the names of Nankervis and Smith as being examples of players who have come off rookie lists in their early 20's. Naismith is another. Not necessarily saying that they would want to come to us, but there are young ruckmen out there with more upside than Spencer. Mitch King is probably another example.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
