We gave Trenners an extra year to see if he can get over his injury. He has. Now we should give him a chance to have a preseason. I am not arguing for a 5 year deal, but for him to be given the year to see if he can return to the quality player he was.

Gone: Grimes, Dunn, Newton, Terlich, one of Dawes/Pedo and looking like H is gone too. Trenners re-rookied, Wagner upgraded, Michie gone, Hibberd in.

That's 1 rookie spot and 5 senior spots available. Then we get another 1-2 players via trade/FA and use the 3 minimum draft picks.

Going by that scenario Stuie our first Pick wont be till 45 (assuming 27 gets us Hibberd).

What are we going to trade to fill 2 of those 5 vacancies? Remember if we trade out a player to get one in, that doesn't fill a vacancy you've created. I also note you haven't mentioned Max King currently in the D League, that's another vacancy as he's finishing his 3rd rookie list year. Dunn's contracted also. Plus if we upgrade Wagner we only need to use 2 picks at the draft.

We can easily give Trenners a 1 year extension without it clogging the list. Many others to move on first.

A former pick 2, captain of the club who's been debilitated by injuries and hasn't done a full pre-season in 3 years versus pick 80.

It's really not a difficult decision. Deserves a one year deal to see if a proper pre-season can get him right. It's not like we're choosing between him and a potential next Jack Viney. Of course he may never get back to what he was but there's so much more potential in Jack Trengove than there is in a pick 80 in this years draft.

I think Stuie has it right however if add that if we don't trade in (or we trade out as well) Grimes is the first on the list to be retained if he'd like to stay (and doesn't choose to walk for a 2 year deal as a free agent). No benefit in picks in the 80s or 90s. 

In any other year both would have played 12 games as some mids would have been injured.

Ah yes, King cut also. Dunn would be a trade obviously as well, bringing in a pick, I think he'll ask to be traded.

We can still trade future picks, we used 2 first round picks last year meaning on top of this year we could still trade another 2 years worth of first rounders if we wanted to.

If you want a literal, viable scenario then I could see us trading a future first round pick to GWS for Tomlinson, Hoskin-Elliot and a 2nd round pick from this year's draft. That would help GWS with their list reduction and also give us another pick this year.

That would mean, pick 27 for Hibberd, Wagner upgraded, and picks 34 and 45 to use, plus say pick 56 from Brisbane for Dunn.

He deserves it based on sentimentality but not much else. Pardon my ignorance but why is it him or pick 80?

At this stage i don't really like Tomilinson. Would prefer we didn't go for him. Hoskin-ELliot not really sure as he has dropped of the radar with his injury. Happy to let both go to Carlton. But can understand sort of need for two players like them.

Yeah, don't think either are stars or would likely even be best 22, but I think they fit our needs and age profile for depth.

Even if Goodwin wants Grimes he is an UFA and will table the best offer out there. Grimes is gone, will be offered a better deal elsewhere even if goodie wants him to stay.

Trenners is interesting. We need the depth and he was ok at AFL level this year. Still room for improvement, and a pre-season will do him wonders. I would give him another year.

You want to trade down to a 2nd round pick and a couple of depth players you say are not best 22.

I would suggest that both would be useful to keep.  Trenners can definitely use another preseason, and hopefully demonstrate the key skills that we know he can.  He is great cover and potentially can push back into the first 22.  Grimes would seem to need some additional skills, and does offer some experienced cover.

So, unless we have eyes on specific needs, or can't attract quality offers (Wasn't Trenners worth pick 12 to the toigs?) - we should pop these guys on lower, performance based contracts and set them the task of working their way back into the 22.

I would prefer to see Grimes extended the one year but am more flexible on seeing him let go than I am Trenners who should absolutely be kept for another year.

Gutting our depth (including a swag of senior players) after a year with a relatively clean injury run would not be a smart way to go. As much as some wish to claim otherwise, these guys ARE AFL standard players.

Lessons should be learned from the mistakes of previous FD’s. Footy clubs are built from people, and both trenners and grimes being shown the door on top of potentially Dunn and Garland (if traded) wipes out a lot of leadership and strength from the playing group. Sure, these 4 might not be best 22 moving forward but if they’re teaching the young guys how to play at Casey and are ready to be serviceable cover for the AFL side as/when injury or form requires.

 

I’d be delisting Terlich, Dawes, Newton & Michie and keeping guys like Trenners and Grimes around.
