Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Tim English will go early. Max Lynch most likely to go GWS via Their Academy. Mitch McCarthy = project type who might slip thru to late 40's

Any more out there??????

OK, I get that Lynch is in the GWS academy. I get that the AFL has changed the rules limiting the number of picks the clubs can have in action and I get that a club can go into points deficit (presumably catching up on the points they're short by in the following year's draft).

What I would like to see is how it all works as a matter of practicality. The Giants nabbed pick 2 to allow them to take a player before the bidding starts. That would allow them to take say, Sandy Dragon Andrew McGrath with that selection. According to reports, there are at least another five players in the academy who would be drafted in the 40 picks - Setterfield, Macreadie, Perryman, Mutch and Lynch.

The picks they seem to have to get these players is seemingly endless- 15, 37, 39, 45, 52, 55, 57, 58, 59, 60, 77, 109, 127 BUT they are supposed to be limited in numbers so will definitely go heavily into points deficit.

This seems to put them at an enormous advantage over all of the other clubs especially when, as pointed out above by Chelly, part of their academy area in the Riverina area is already a strong football area and doesn't need an academy. At some stage the other clubs are going to feel badly ripped off by the AFL and its love child.

It's one thing to make the NSW clubs stronger but this smells of an outrageous compromise of the draft system to me.

So how does this work?

So how does this work?

I'm not exactly sure of the actual points formula but am led to believe it's going to work something like this:-

After using pick 2 to draft McGrath, GWS have access to Setterfield, Perryman and Macreadie who are all considered to be prospective top 20 draft picks.

If I read it right they will use pick 15 and picks in the 30s, 40s and possibly 50s to get all three of them. That's peanuts - and they still have access to more by being allowed to go into points deficit.

The other clubs were up in arms accusing Melbourne who were pathetic on the field in 2009 either way you looked at it, of tanking to get 4 picks in the top 20. The Giants who finished third are able to play the system and get the same result and nobody's batting an eyelid.

I have posted this Phantom Draft elsewhere (the #47 thread) but it's on topic here as well - 2016 Young Talent Time. If you follow the selections, GWS are forced to bid for a few of their players in the opening two rounds and actually decline a bid on one of their academy members. Max Lynch did not attract a bid to the end of the second round.

I will also look at Chris25's PD in the 2016 AFL National Draft Prospects thread a little later on.

I just noticed Fremantle has delisted jack Hannath, I wonder if he could fill the ruck forward hole we have... Would be awesome to  see him in the red and blue, especially considering how close we were to drafting him... He was practically one of the boys, then freo cut our grass...

I would think most of the boys that were here at the time are gone.

I remember when that happened and so took an interest in him when he played. Each time I felt a little better about not getting him.

Anyone seen Kegan Brooksby play? Gold Coast ruckman delisted today. Stats in his last game in R23 were good.

He was injured for a lot of this year, but when fit seemed to only be back-up to what I think was the worst ruck combination in the league. Given there injuries this year the fact he only forced his way in sparingly then was delisted shows he's probably going to fill the role we've currently got Spencer doing. I don't think we need 2 insurance only ruckman.

Played a fair bit forward or back at GC. Don't think he has the athleticism to ruck full time but he does have a dip nor the skills to play key position at either end. I know they've got Witts but a little surprised they didn't hang on to him for 1 more year.

The delisted GC ruckman I like the look of more just based on stats and some highlight videos is Cameron Loersch

Downie from GWS will be delisted, he's the best we could probably do.

The word is that Downie and a few others will be delisted before the end of the month deadline in order to allow for GWS to keep all of its selections for academy bidding.

However, in order for us to pick up a DFA, we have to make room on our list for another selection because we only have three spots available.

Any chance you might want to nominate which contracted player we would be paying out to create space?

It's a deep draft and there's more than a handful of decent delisted players floating around this year. I don't think it will be much of a risk to wait until a rookie pick for Downie or someone of his quality.

WJ in another thread quoted the AFL Prospectus earlier in the year with the top 25 young draft prospects and it included a SA ruckman Peter Ladhams.

"Peter Ladhams Ruck South Australia Plays like: Robert Warnock

A 202cm ruckman, impressed with his tap work at the 2015 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, recording a hitout win rate of 54% - ranked second."

He seems to have fallen out of favour. Is that due to injury, poor form or that comparison with Robert Warnock.

Doesn't appear to relish body contact from that footage WJ. Good athleticism though I don't much like the kicking action.

I reckon just being combative is half the battle against the senior ruck men. Guess he might get a bit tougher as he puts on size.

What are we looking for in a ruckman?

We already have the current AA ruckman and a 27 year old mature back up.

We've just delisted a player who we tried to develop as a ruck/forward and invested three years into him - and failed.

We also have Mitch King who starts his development time at the club and at the same time will spend a fair amount of time this year in recovery from his second ACL.

Another youngster to develop over time is definitely someone we want. Here's his coach's assessment from Inside Football -

Peter Ladhams 14/1/98 202.6cm 93.8kg Norwood

"Peter was an AFL level two academy member this year. Had a difficult year given his performances at the academy weren't great but when he came back after some feedback from Brenton Sanderson he knuckled down, shaved his dreadlocks and changed the way he felt about himself and gave other people a different look at him. At 202cm can play ruck/forward, he had a great Under 18 campaign and played well in our Under 18s and got a crack reserves level. Tested well at the state combine so his physical attributes are good. I think there are some clubs considering him again after perhaps being not too sure earlier in the year. I reckon Pete will play AFL football at some stage." - Norwood talent manager and Under 18 coach Robbie Neil

Strengths: athleticism, size
NTI: consistency

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
