Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

THE HUNT FOR A RED HOT RUCKMAN

I'm not buying into the pros and cons of Vickery, but it is perfectly natural to want to persist with inconsistent players already at the club and not want to import more of the same (assuming there is a better alternative available to import).

Herein lies the problem. There are only a handful of guys across the league that do this role well consistently. And none of their clubs will let them go.

Vickery's best football is worthy of a spot in our best 22. He is a better pure forward than Dawes or Pederson and would still have finished top 4 in our goal kicking even this year.

He is also ruckman height and capable of winning a few taps which none of our current forwards do well.

Is he the second coming of Paul Salmon? No. Would he make our team better? Probably.

Richmond have just re-signed Maric despite only playing 3 games this year.  They are looking to get rid of Vickery.

Sort of gives you an idea of their assessment of Vickery's capabilities.

Or Richmond's.

I'm not totally against Lowden and I'm the first to admit, I haven't seen a lot of him. But seeing he's already effectively made no impact at two clubs, why would it be any difference if he came to us? Would he actually be an upgrade of Spencer?

Fair comment. He had a lot of injuries at Hawthorn and when he did finally get free of injuries, McEvoy & Hale didn't miss to many games, plus Ceglar was also there. Having said that in the one game he did play, he booted 3 goals.

At Adelaide Jacobs & Jenkins have been a hard combo to dislodge, yet he still kicked over 20 goals in the SANFL.

If the club was to recruit Vickery, I'm not about to go and drive a dump truck of manure to AAMI Park or anything, but I don't see his ruck work being any better then Dawes. Lowden or Zac Clarke or Shaun McKernan I see as being players that can ruck at least as well if not better then Spencer can now,  but also compete better then Spencer forward.

I'd have Vickery on about par with Andrejis Everritt as simply forwards who can pinch hit ruck as they're more expendable then Watts.

What about your man Darcy Cameron 'Angry', would he be a better bet than any of these?

Personally i think he's a better option then all of them as he has much more scope to improve. Problem is there's no way of ensuring we get him. Just becomes a lucky dip in the draft.

How's Hannah tracking at Freo?  Having been in the system for a good few seasons now, I'd expect that he'd be showing something by now if he's going to make it.

Have had a bit of a soft spot for him since he spent part of a preseason with us (prior to getting picked up by Freo).  That said, I haven't watched any of his games!

Worth a rookie spot. I would also look at James Stewart from GWS. Whatever we do, we need someone. Spencer was great when we beat the Cats last year, but since then he has been ordinary. Minson  and Campbell killed him in the GF.

Be good to see Pederson and Vickery fight for that forward/ruck role...

Hard to disagree that Vickery is a better ruck than a big man who won't ruck.

Not sure though that that is actually a particularly high bar.

Maybe, now that we do seem to have finally developed a 'good culture', maybe Vickery could benefit from a change of scenery to a decent club.

Not yet convinced, but wouldn't microwave my membership if our player management team decided on taking him cheaply.

Vickery is off to Hawthorn.

Nankervis is repeatedly linked with Richmond.

Witts to Gold Coast

Zac Clarke might well stay put.

Vardy has been linked with West Coast.

So the ruck wheel of fortune is spinning without the Dees so far.

Tom Downie at GWS has decent NEAFL form but very limited AFL exposure, he could be available cheaply and be an upgrade on Spencer as a back up. Kicked a few goals in the NEAFL this year but it's hard to read much in to that.

is 31 year old Will Minson worth a year or two? He said he's leaving the Dogs. Never saw him play this year.

I think he's actually retired to pursue interest outside of football, if I understand correctly.

If Tigers have Hampson and think they can get Nankervis, why would they have rushed to sign Maric for another year, instead of waiting 2 weeks.

Good point, but they know they are losing Vickery and still need 3 options I guess. They don't have a 3rd guy ready to go. I expect Maric is there partly as a steadying presence in a team that could potentially self destruct pretty quickly if things go badly next year.

How about not even contesting the ruck, and instead just have an extra midfielder sharking the opposition's lone ruckman's inevitable hitout?

A second-to-third tier club with a young and developing list is not the type to recruit club off-cuts.

If Hannath was no good to Freo, then he is no good to us.  Likewise Minson.  He's old hat anyway.

I would move on Nankervis because of his athleticism, however I am certain Melbourne have something in the works.

I think Hogan, Weideman, Watts, Fwd-Ruck is too top heavy and costs us a mid in the rotation.  Ultimately Weed or Weed and Watts need to share the Fwd-Ruck duties but I agree that's a few years off for Weed.  In the meantime it's a conundrum - Max goes down Jordan Roughead style in a final and we lose because there's no Tom Boyd.

As far as rucks arevconcerned we were just about the most fortunate club in the AFL this year . We kept the All Australian ruckman on the park for just about the whole season. The odds are that we won't be so lucky next year.

Both Grand Finalists needed 4 ruckmen to get through their campaigns.  Roughead / Campbell/ Minson/ Boyd v. Tippett/ Sinclair/ Naismith / Nankervis. Arguably the emergence of Boyd as a genuine relief ruckman - esp in the prelim - was pivotal to the Bulldogs premiership.

Injuries to ruckmen late in the season seriously affected the campaigns  of several clubs - Natanui/ Lycett , Ceglar, Lobbe ( on top of Ryder) , Hampson and Jacobs( with Jenkins sore). Add Sandilands/ Griffen ..... the list goes on.

Although he is the star of one of my all-time favourite comedies, I've never been a big fan of Frank Spencer. But I did think that at a pinch he could hold his own at the centre bounces. But then I saw Campbell and Minson take him to pieces in the VFL Grand Final.

On that display we could find ourselves limping  towards the finals with a ruck combination of Pederson and Watts if anything happens to Max.

Recent history says that to win a premiership you've got to have 3 If not 4 genuine ruckmen  on your list .We can't risk going into 2017 with Frank the only one big enough and experienced enough to cover Maxie

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
