Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I feel Hibberd is more likely than Tyson

Hibbard didnt do the main intraclub but he was part of the ball movement drills before and after it (along with Jetta who always seems to have some kind of niggle) . Tyson was in street clothes sitting on the sideline (he may have done some more running before the session I wasnt there that early)..

I also think they will play Weiderman this was the forwardline they were using in the intraclub:
F:        Garlett     Weiderman  Petracca
HF:      Watts       Hogan     vandenBerg

But other than that really like your side

Surprised to see so many have Melksham in their first 18.  is this because you assume Goody won't leave him out or you really think he is better than the alternatives?

Possible HBF - Hibberd, Hunt, Salem, Lewis, Wagner, Vince, even JT.  I realise some of these guys will play midfield but there is pressure for spots there too.

I dont have Melksham in my 22 at present. Especially after a year out of the game, I would assume a month at casey would be the go

This is my thinking. He put alot into getting both him and Hibbard into the club. He wouldn't put them straight to Casey. I would say each will get 4-5 weeks to prove their worth unless they play particularly poorly in the JLT. Goody also labeled Melksham as one of the better in the intra club.

Wagner is an interesting one. I thought he was pretty good when he played last year but I'm not sure if he will get the oppertunities this year. Maybe he will challenge a few for a spot. We seem to have a ton of good defenders but not many that are very good. Add to that Hunt, I want him to stay behind the ball but they may choose to move him up the ground just because of the excessive number of HB options we have

I think he's borderline, but Goodwin sometimes seems to go out of his way to praise him- I suspect he's a bit of a favorite.  By many reports he was quite good in the intra-club, but I suspect we'll get a much better idea of where things sit after next Saturday's match.

Opportunity for a borderline 22 players like JKH, Harmes, Trengove and Kennedy... can one of them seize it?

Do you or anyone else know about Kennedy? He didnt play the intra does that leave him in just as much doubt? Might give JKH a huge opportunity with both Kennedy and Kent potential outs

The Saints really exposed us for a lack of pace and run at Etihad twice last year.

I think Melskham, as a 100 game player, a runner, and a bloke that the Coach gave up a fair bit for 15 months ago, is a lock for the 22 in Round 1.

I'm really interested by what we do with the tall defenders.  I think it's horses for courses this year with Frost/O McDonald - they don't both need to play every single week.

We just look so slow on the hard, fast deck at Etihad, so it wouldn't surprise me if Hibberd was asked to play a bit taller on someone like Membrey, who he only gives away an inch to.  It allows you to go with a running side like this:

Jetta, Frost, Hibberd

Hunt, T McDonald, Salem

Stretch, Lewis, Vince

Petracca, Hogan, Watts

JKH, Pedersen, Garlett

Gawn, Jones, Viney

Int: Oliver, Brayshaw, Melksham, vandenBerg

HF: Petracca  Hogan  JKH/Vanders
FF: Watts   Weed/Pedda   Garlett

Next best: Bugg, Harmes, Trengove, Wagner

I'd like 3 talls down back but all 6 starting defenders, plus Melksham, Salem and Lewis who could all spend time at half back are strong in the air. If we are going with a kicking based skills game plan then we need skills!

The 2nd tall at each end and Kent's vacant half forward are the most open spots right now.

Jetta and Hibberd didn't play in the intraclub so they need to show something in the preseason games but both should be good enough. Tyson obviously has to get back in to full training and play a game or two as well.

Last time we played the Saints we had players such as White, Wagner, Grimes, Matt Jones, and Ben Kennedy in the team.  Three weeks later in round 20 when we beat the Hawks none of those 5 played.

The first time we played them we had a first gamer in Petracca, Dunn, Lumumba, Wagner (4th game), Bugg, Kennedy, and Frost playing as a forward, where he's hopeless.  vandenBerg also played and he was limited all year with his ankle and is moving better this preseason.

The team we put out in round one ought be far stronger than either of those lineups.  Petracca will be better, Oliver didn't play in either game, Salem wasn't there in round 17, Brayshaw will be a different player, add Lewis, Hibberd, and Melksham and the maturation of others like Stretch, Hogan, Viney, Oscar, etc.

The Saints will have better matchups for Hogan with Carlisle and structure with Brown.

Who knows how we'll go, but I'm very confident the team we'll put out will be far superior to the others the Saints accounted for.

I also think our big weakness against the saints has been speed and speed of ball movement and we have gone some way to addressing that with hunt and stretch now basically certain starters to really add outside run and carry to the side

A lot of people (not me) wrote JKH a long time ago, this is the perfect opportunity for him to shine.

The last time JKH was playing at the AFL level - over a year ago - he managed 2 goals in 9 games. I didn't see him against GWS in the final round but he looked like an absolute rabbit-in-the-headlights in that farcical win over Brisbane. I think he even managed negative stats. Essentially, he's unproven as a goal-kicker, and will need to be able to run through the middle regardless. I'm not writing him off, and by the sounds of it he's well respected at the club and is having a cracker of a pre-season, but I'm not so sure that Kent's absence will be JKH's opportunity. We have potentially fringe players - Harmes, Bugg, Kennedy - who can slot in at HFF and have more recent exposure at the top level.

JKH came onto the scene with a bit of a blitz but in some ways I think that counted against him as that became his benchmark.

He's had a bit of bad luck with injuries and in particular it's hampered him with getting consistency, but a clear run at it this year and I think he will be in with a real shot of being a regular in the team. Particularly if Garlett continues his disappointing form from the end of last year.

He's not hugely quick, but he's slippery. Big year for him either way.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
