Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Barassi collection to be sold at auction

It would have been nice for some of these items to be denoted to the club?? Hopefully the club could purchase them and they aren't lost to private collections. If they are to be displayed anywhere I would like them to be in a MFC museum.

I would not have thought that Ron would need the money so the selling of some quite outstanding memorabilia has me questioning the motives at play!?

Buyers / collectors often loan their stuff back to museums and displays, so some of this gear may well end up back at the Sports Museum at the 'G or similar.

And given the length and success of his involvement in the game, this would be just a fraction of all his memorabilia - I suspect the club already has a decent collection of its own.

I had a look thru the catalogue a few weeks ago and felt sad that the collection would be dispersed far and wide as the story in the collection was far greater than any individual or group of items.

There was stuff from his time at  Melb, Carlton and North. I was quite surprised to see his 1964 GF jumper and several premiership medals.  There were also a couple of things from Barassi Snr - eg his posthumus VFL Premiership medal and watch.  Hugely personal things for Barassi that must have been hard to part with.  Had hoped the MFC would buy these most precious parts of our club history while helping out a club hero and AI citizen.

Failing MFC having these precious items I'm delighted the collection stays intact within the AFL.

Edit: Just saw this article:  https://leonardjoel.com.au/2016/08/29/barassi-museum-dream-now-a-reality/  which says:  "The Melbourne Football Club via its Chairman Glen Bartlett have also offered to assist with the collection which is of special and obvious significance to them".   Good to see the club was/is involved with the fate of the collection.

Really?

Barassi

For all his faults, Little has a history of philanthropic work.  And, he and RDB are great friends.

I'm delighted he saved the collection intact.

Disappointed that a private individual has bought the collection. Good that its intact, but not that its in the hands of a private individual unless he is going to donate it to a museum such as the sports museum at the MCG for public viewing. Collections like this have important historical significance particularly one that has come from one of the icons of the game. Lets hope it has a good outcome for all rather than one individual.

An opportunity was lost when the MCC recently sold-off two " surplus to requirements  " terraces in Jolimont , one of which was our former hq .   I question the accuracy of our reputation for having many generous top-end-of-town supporters .

Good points 'hemingway' as no mention is made of donation - only to find a suitable place to house and display it.

Your points beg the question why the MFC or MFC plus AFL didn't buy the collection rather than let it fall into private hands, not even MFC supporter hands at that.

Never thought I would say, "well done Paul Little". Its a strange and wonderful world at the best of times and I find it interesting and a bit disappointing that  the buyer had no connection to the MFC. Good to see that the collection will remain as one.

Then don't say it! Fortuitous At best!

For RDB sake I'm glad he is happy about the new owner!

Surely Ron doesn't need the money from this??

MFC and MCC should have made a joint offer I feel!

We have top end of town supporters but the ones I know hang onto their cash or spend on other causes.

The only thing I find odd is that RDB and his family would want to part with the lot, particularly his father's medals, the 1964 jumper and medals. Would've thought his family (he has three adult children and grandkids, I believe) might keep some of the more important items. Must have been a tough decision to make. Having said that, I know nothing of the story or reasons behind the sale.

for all we know certain items (of unknown details) may well have been kept by ron and the family

a figure of a few hundred thousand was mentioned so i'm surprised the mcc/mfc couldn't have easily raised the dosh

What's the relevance of this to the Barassi collection? Surely not suggesting the Club should have bought the former HQ to house things such as the collection?

The mighty MCC of which I am about to become a 50 year member should have DONATED one of those terraces to the MFC for a museum/archive . It is embarrassing that the First Club has no such resource .

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
