I disagree. Very open year and if Mills keeps playing as he has the last few weeks then I think he could jump ahead of the favourite in Caleb Daniel to win it. 

Petracca, Parish and Weitering are next in line and the clear top 5 winning chances.

Hunt along with a couple of others in Menadue, Fantasia, Maynard and Hewett are guys who have been performing well for a while and just need to time a good game with a win and an absence of a standout performer and they'll get the nod.

Well at least it is very less likely. If someone bobs up in the final 7 matches (or even less) and kicks 10 goals in every match, presumably they'd win it.  But unless in every week thus far, the player had just missed out on the weekly award, you'd have to say he hasn't been noticed much compared to earlier nominees who have continued to perform.

Sounds hyperbolic but I am not joking, I think he will be the most exciting of our young players bar Hogan and we have some very good young players.  He is the package.

Pretty much.

The award started as the first year player that was likely to be a star. It has morphed into the best first year player award akin to the Brownlow. Players that are nominated in the first few rounds are overwhelmingly represented in the winners list. No one has won it after round 14. Could it happen? Possibly. Will it happen?

Highly unlikely.

There are really good players that never get nominated and can never win it. Sometimes the AFL conjurs up a weekly win so that certain players can win the overall award. 

The award is a joke IMO and should go back to its original intention so that all players nominated have a reasonable chance to win.They should have a weekly award and then an overall award that can be won by anyone fitting the age/games criteria.

2012 is worthy of mention as it was won by Daniel Talia - the only stat for the year that he won was games played, in many of the top indicators he was not in the top 50. From round 16 onwards there were some handy players, most with season stats better than Talia, Josh Caddy, Brandon Ellis, Adam Treloar, Devon Smith, Sam Blease, Sam Shaw and Chad Wingard. This may reinforce the argument that the winner has already been nominated but it does not make it right. Talia was 79th for disposals averaging 8.09 per game (23 games), Toby Green was nominated round 14 averaging 28.37 disposals per game (18 games) 

Edit: Last year Hogan managed 13.05 disposals per game (20 games) plus lots of goals - Patrick Cripps 23.55disp per game (20 games) - How did Talia win it? Must be the no D1CKHEADS policy.

You do know who Talia is right? And what type of player?

He won the award because he was a super key defender who was probably the best shut down defender in a good side. Disposals mean nothing to his game. I'm sure Rivers had similar stats when he played CHB in a good dees side in 2004 and won the award.

Aside from picking Lewis Taylor over Bont when do you think they've got it wrong? I certainly can't think of a player who wasn't nominated and missed out that way.

I'm not sure on the exact description of the award - ie. is it best player on output or best player on future, but they do seem to get the balance right most of the time. 

It's highly unlikely anyone would've been the best player all year if they weren't able to play a great game early in the year, that's why a late nominee doesn't win it. It's not that they are overlooked. Mills will go very close to winning it this year after his nomination tonight.

No, you are wrong. Rivers stats in his Rising star year are better than Talias, but don't let facts stop you. In 2004 Rivers was 11th overall for disposal averages among Rising star nominees, Talia was 79th.  Edit:- NOTE:- 11th & 79th among eligible players for rising star - thanks billy2803
