Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Max Gawn AA ruckman

Just listening to the Sunday footy show, interesting stat pulled out,

Number one ranked hit outs two advatage player in the comp

1. Max Gawn (113)

2. Nic Nat (74 )

when you combine that with how good he is around the ground with attacking and defensive marks i think he has a very strong case to be ahead of even Todd Goldstein

He is the biggest reason we have taken the next step as a team. Take nothing away from other players but gawnys form has helped us in more ways than any other player.

That is a huge difference from first to second.  50% + more than Nic Nat.  Do you know where Goldstein and the other leading ruckmen are at?

Nic Nat will still get first ruck as long as Gerard Healy is a judge.

Goldy is still going well. For Max it's about consistency.

Drew with Goldy. Clearly edged Mumford. Hickey probably got close to drawing with him. Leuenberger nullified him, but the team was asleep. Rich, Coll, GC he played well.

Nic Nat, Sam Jacobs, if fit Sandilands, Stef Martin, Tippett, the Geelong duo, the Hawks duo around the ground, there's a few challenges left for Max.

Historically Tom Campbell has used his height and strength pretty well to challenge Max around the ball and has got forward from the middle to test him.

I like that we played him forward a lot in the last quarter on Saturday, it seemed his was tiring. Pedersen's ability (or lack of) to go in to the middle and hold his own when we play teams with two rucks is very important. Around the ground his kicking for a big bloke is quite handy and he marks and moves well but particularly at the rare centre bounces he's in for he has to break even. I really liked the way he sharked a hit out from the centre bounce on the weekend, could be a handy tactic.

if Gawn and Vney arent two of the three followers the AA team should be scrapped

If the squad was picked right now, Nev Jetta would also be pushing for a spot I reckon.  Mr Reliable.

it is no coincidence that the dramatic rise in our midfield happened at the same time as the rising dominance of Gawn.

Those at the clearances are very good and have improved but Gawn is giving them gold plated service.

Happy to say that I picked Gawn as a star from the get-go ( and to further show you that I am no mug at picking them, I also announced Jeremy Howe and Juice Newton would be stars and predicted Magner would be our Sam Mitchell)

Well done for picking Gawn 8 years ago...

Only a year ago I predicted the greatest service Max Gawn would provide to the MFC was to puke on Scully.  Suffering serious injuries, couldn't jump, couldn't kick and seemed too much the buffoon to become even a reasonable footballer.

Now my favourite replay is Geelong last year.

And he has come on in leaps and bounds since then.  His ruck work is a joy to watch, particularly as he has a 360 degree palming circle.  The taps to Jones and Viney in the third quarter on Saturday when each kicked a goal were magnificent.  The only time I can recall the Dees having such clear ball from the ruck was for a limited time with Jamar/Maloney.  Once it was worked out that most of the Jamar taps went to the one place, this lost some of its magic.

I cannot remember such a spectacular rise from a player who has been on a list for as long as he has.

He has also given the team great press and one would think his persona will encourage a number of kids to follow us, and if we are going to be strong in the future, we need as many Melbourne jumpers at Auskick as possible.

Healy raves about Max. We're more likely to get Max and Viney in the team with Healy as a judge, IMO.

Absolute truth - from day one he showed glimpses - teased. However in fairness my strike rate of picking  later draft pick stars is not good. (actually  - appalling)

Watching his tap work is like watching great spin bowling. You're not quite sure how he gets to be so nuanced. The best for me against Gold Coast was the tap to the skipper for his left foot goal in the third quarter. Pure magic. He's also becoming a huge personality presence to attract new supporters. And the lesson..... big boys take time.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Jimmy Stynes Brownlow medal. win

Wouldnt it be something else if another Melbourne ruckman wearing the famous number 11 took home the 2016 Charlie?

The Brownlow predictor on the AFL website currently has him on 9 votes after 7 games, behind Dangerfield and Luke Parker (both 12 votes). Viney currently on 8 votes.

Not sure how accurate the predictor is but it's encouraging to see Maxy and Jack near the top.

On this weeks MFC Demons podcast the guys went through some of the comparative stats between Gawn and Goldy and Gawn was ahead in all (I think it was hitouts, possessions and marks?) Marks he was ahead something like 4.7 to 2.6 per game. If he's also ahead in hitouts to advantage and slightly behind in goals per game (1.3 to 1) I think it's fair to say he should be leading the AA ruck contest at this stage. Goldstein is leading in some other key stats but overall they're pretty even.

I'm really bitter that we wont get to see Goldstein v Gawn again during the Home & Away season.

It's a bonus incentive to make the 8. I'm picturing a semi-final, after we've won our elimination final and they've lost an away qualifying final.

A reprise of the Demons-Kangaroos game from a few rounds ago, in a final (ideally with final scores reversed) would be one for the history books.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
