Jack Watts' Game

Gawn goes to FP and Pedo/Frost goes to ruck. 

Or Gawn to the bench and Pedo/Frost goes to the ruck and we go smaller up fwd for a few minutes each qtr and mix it up.  

If a tall goes down throughout the game obviously can/could cause an issue.

I think the coaches will continue to play them both for the immediate future.

I'm not debating which one is better, I'm saying they have different roles and play very differently, so I wouldn't be thinking about them the same way when thinking of replacements in the 22.

It wasn't me, but if Jack maintains the aggression and contested marking that he did on Saturday we probably won't need both Frost and Pedersen.

It will solve the problem when Petracca comes in - one of them will have to go out. That will restore the forward-line balance. They only need Hogan & Watts as the talls. We need more speed & crumbers.

What bothers me is the possibility that the only reason they're both picked is that neither of them are adequate as a chop-out for Gawn.

I can see why they want to put games into Frost, but he's not earning them on performance at the moment. It also bothers me that they seem to be avoiding playing Frost in defence (e.g. when O-Mac went off) or contesting any ball-ups. I thought he was recruited as a "swing-man", but they seem to be avoiding using him as one. Going to be a loooooooooong time before Frost's worth his place as a forward alone.

Yes. I was surprised that Frost wasn't used to replace Oscar when he went down. His one set shot at goal did not exactly inspire confidence in him as a tall forward.  Still, I like his athleticism and he could be devlpoped as a Biclavs (?sp) type ruck rover, who could fill in for an injured defender.

In terms of attack on the ball, body language and influence on the outcome (ie., goal assists, solid passing up the field, contested marks, marks i50) i would say that's the best game i've seen one Mr J Watts play for this club.

He has now set a standard. Now for the consistency (with this type of standard as a minimum benchmark).

Wow did anyone just see Jonathan Brown just show vision of Watts and Hogan working in tandem with Watts Blocking Davis so Marchbank could go with Hogan.

Was seriously good to watch! Could Watts be the combo partnership thag Jesse is looking for?

I wasn't the big idea around Frost is that he will be able to get out of the back of defences due to his pace, this combined with his ability to put pressure on in the forward half is why he will be used there. I can see him having a 3-4 goal game, not due to his disposal being well, but more so because when we are able to get those goals over the top of the press he will be one who can take advantage of it.
That said, his set shot was a lot better than Pedersons....

I'm wondering when our coaches come to the realisation that Frost isn't a forward. He doesn't have the smarts to use his athleticism to get to contests, and doesn't have much natural ability full stop. Replace O Mac with him as a permament backman, and give Dunn a crack up forward. Use Pedersen as a 2nd ruck/forward.

Watts and Hogan are smart players, but neither Pedersen or Frost complement them.

A terrific game from Watts. Lots of positive comments on this thread which is terrific. Three really resonated with me:

• His intensity after kicking his goal in the last was terrific - you could see he was willing his teammates to win. As noted this is leadership and was great to see. Incidentally it was a terrific mark - he read the ball beautifully. One of 10 he took for the day, at least 3 of which being contested. 
• This sort of game is the benchmark and should be his touchstone. He has played better games for the dees and as someone pointed out it is a myth that he needs a break out game (as if his 100 games have all been nothing but a rehearsal for his coming of age). But - and it is a big but - this is one of the few times he has imposed himself on the game and as the OP suggests through his effort dragged us over the line for a win
• Webber's comments about the different rate players  develop was salient in terms of Watts development. One thing i'd add is that that many players say they don't feel they are really developed until they have hit the 100 game mark. The next 3-4 years are likely to be Watts' best 

A few other observations/comments:

• I would love for him to get his average possession up to 20 (he may well have made that number if not for the bad cork he got) as he brings his teamamtes into the game with both his kicks and handballs
• Such was his impact in the last i was really surprised he only had 5 touches in the last. Four of them were score involvements.
• Two of those score involvements showed his skill. His spin and handball to VB was sublime but it was his kick to a leading Hogan that really caught my eye. He had to kick it quickly but was close to the man on the mark so had little space. Off half a step he kicked across his body and popped it into the hole for Hogan to run to. Looked simple - and i guess most players should be able to execute such a kick - but still had to deliver. And did. 
• Watts brought Hogan into the game. As someone noted there is growing chemistry between the two (i liked Hogans'comment about his eyes lighting up when Watts has the ball)
• I love that Watts is taking players on and really backing himself. In my view not always doing so has been one of his key issues holding him back and has, in part, fueled the perception he is soft. There were at least 3 examples of him really taking the tackler on and using his skills. I wonder if Macca is a factor with this

This doesn't happen very often but I think we can forgive his below 20 possie game because of the corkie he got. He looked in considerable amounts of pain immediately after it and was very clearly hampered for the 2nd quarter and much of the 3rd. That he was able to come out the other side of that in the 4th is a credit to him, one which I'm not sure he would've had the fortitude to do in previous years.

But you are right, the more he gets the ball and delivers lace out to Hogan the better!

Also wasn't it great to see him back his pace and agility that we heard so much about in his early days!
