Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Paleo diet could make you gain weight, new scientific research shows

Does anyone know if most of the Melbourne players are still following the Paleo diet?

Research just announced by Melbourne University is not very favourable and makes you wonder whether we were a little hasty jumping on-board this bandwagon.

I did it last year and lost 10 KGs in 10 weeks. I've since kept 8 of those off. It helped me. ( mind you, dropping out the Neapolitan ice cream and curry pies was probably a factor too )

Told you all the paleo diet was a joke when the MFC announced they were using it.  Believe I was shouted down by a few posters.

Just another useless fad diet created by someone looking for a quick buck.

Pretty sure the club went on a HFLC diet, not paleo.

Pat yourself on the back if you like though.

The experiment was on mice, which have a noticeably different lifestyle from humans.  Significantly reducing carbs will certainly lead to weight loss if you're a bit overweight, in my limited but very successful experience, but high fat intake will offset that to some extent.  Moderate fat, low carbs, you'll get there.

Correct and I don't think it was hard core LCHF either.

My missus is a Dietician and has tried the LCHF 'lifestyle' since the start of the year to satisfy her own curiosity. She now says that she feels ripped off by her degree and can totally see the benefits of this eating lifestyle - one of which has been 8 kg weight loss.

Excuse my ignorance. What are HFLC and LCHF

Thanks.  I basically went on this diet, (calling it Paleo) after I read about Shane Watson and the Cricket Team Dr going on it and raving about it and then reading about the team going on it. I lost about 10kg's and it made a hell of a difference to my stamina on the bike. Don't know if that was because of the diet or not having to push the extra 10kg's up the hills. I thought it was both.

A neighbour up the road went on the Paleo diet 3 yrs ago and has been on it every since. He lost 15kg's and has kept it off. Also had bad arthritis in his hands which is gone plus was on high level blood pressure tablets long term and is now off them completely.

As I understand it, it is a matter of actual fact that Jack Fitzpatrick's life was changed going on this diet at the Club. It completely transformed his diabetes to the point that he only had to take insulin once a day at the end of the day instead of having to do blood tests constantly throughout the day including during games.

He's not a mouse so seems to have worked ok for him. If he was a mouse maybe the Uni study would be accurate.

My wife complains about not losing weight while she goes to dieticians and takes weight loss pills etc and sits there looking at me doing paleo and losing 10kg's. But she knocks it and says its bad. Proof is in the pudding. My friend up the road who lost 15kg's has a wife who has done the same thing. Hangs it on him for doing a fad diet and she is way over weight taking all sorts of ridiculous weight loss supplements etc that cost a fortune and then just puts it all back on.

The only people knocking the LCHF or Paleo diets seem to be the ones that never try it. I've never heard anyone going on them knocking them.

For every study there is a counter study. Research into diets is forever going to yield varying results.

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2016/02/australian-researchers-develop-low-carb-high-protein-and-fat-diet-that-fights-diabetes/

The thing about LCHF eating is whether it's sustainable from a food production pov.

And to be honest, in order to lose weight it's as simple as creating a deficit in the amount of energy consumed via eating, to the amount of energy burnt via normal bodily function and added exercise routine.

LCHF diet puts the body into a Ketonic state where the body doesnt rely on normal glycogen to operate.

http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/ketosis.html

Tim Noakes is the Sth African Scientist who has basically the instigated the 'Banting' craze that has engulfed much of Southern Africa and subsequently caused much conjecture about its long term benefits. He's currently in a court case after making a recommendation on Twitter regards an infant eating LCHF.

It's going to be interesting to see how this all pans out over the next 10 or so years. This diet or lifestyle diet is relatively new so I would say the jury is still out...

Will this lifestyle diet stack up in the long run? will it decrease or keep us at a healthy weight? many swear by it. Will it increase problems in other areas like heart disease and cancer.

Too soon to tell.

My wife has been pretty well Paleo for months now ( except she likes a wine ) . I've taken on board many of its precepts. Much makes sense. I'm more of a "clean food" than Paleo as I don't mind some grains, don't mind some dairy (cheese, milk and yoghurt )buti watch the quality of the food and mainly cookfrom raw and cut out the unnecessary preservatives etc.

Paleo is very misunderstood and misrepresented. You eat a hell of a lot of veggies , it's not just steak and eggs with bacon on the side.

This so-called study borders on farce. What was it actually setting out to do ? Mice aren't humans.

There's a lot of manipulation of the media to suit vested interests. Many a major conglomerate are a bit twitchy. They wouldn't want too many to cross over to real food instead of mass produced food look-a-likes full of rubbish !!

These studies remind me of the Health research carried out with Tobacco money..Remember those..' Ah smoking ain't so bad !!'

It's not just about HFLC.  It's also about presevetative free and organic ingredients. About the balance etc

There's a lot of rubbish food out there masquerading as healthy. A lot of money made from it.

Think about it.

Interesting thread guys.

I'm a Paleo/HFLC fan over the past three years or so and only have good things to report. I've met the Demon Dr Zee and he's very interested (and follower) of this lifestyle. I was impressed and a tad surprised that he and obviously the dieticians at the club have taken on this approach.

For me it's just about eating real food, lots of veg, a little fruit, moderate amounts of meat and plenty of good fats from sources such as eggs, nuts, avocados and healthy oils like olive/coconut and macadamia.

Perhaps it just works for me (increase muscle/strength, decrease fat) as I'm a pretty active guy (not mouse) but I think it's helped many other who are less active.

Food makes you gain weight if you eat too much of it. It doesn't matter what you're eating. What matters is what makes you feel full. Paleo makes me feel full. Ergo, paleo is good...for me.

Can't say l really agree with this tho I think l know what you are trying to say.

It really really does matter what you eat, I used to be someone who thought calories consumed vs calories burnt was all there was to it, but like many things in life it's not that simple.

If interested the link below is interesting and not too technical

I'm someone who doesn't usually exercise much being in an office job and eats a lot of carbs - toast for breakfast, sandwich/roll for lunch, pasta/rice for dinner every other day. Last year I started making my own cereal ("paleo" Granola), eating chicken salads and roast veggies for lunch and eggs, tuna, steak with veggies for dinner. I wasn't a nazi about but did cut down on carbs dramatically. I also started doing some exercise every other day - 20-30 minutes on the bike and 45-50 minutes of weights.

Within a few weeks I'd lost about 7kgs and was feeling great. Xmas got in the way and I fell off the wagon, it's easy making Pasta for dinner and hard fitting in exercise with two small kids but I can definitely vouch for this. I think the trick is to be flexible and make it a "low" carb not a "no" carb diet.

Just because lab calorie counts do not stack up to what humans actually extract during digestion, doesn't mean the concept of calories in vs calories out is incorrect. It just means that the two different methods of measuring calories are not precisely equivalent.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
