Michelle Cowan and Daisy Pearce join the MFC

A woman has been employed among the coaches of an AFL club for just the second time in history with Michelle Cowan, already a state league pioneer, joining the Melbourne Football Club in a groundbreaking set-up. 
Australia's top female footballer Daisy Pearce has also been signed by the Demons in a full-time role that has seen her resign as a midwife, initially to join Melbourne's commercial team. 
As a player development and welfare coach, Cowan follows the path of Peta Searle who almost abandoned her dream to coach at the elite level before St Kilda recruited her in mid-2014.

I like this for many reasons but above all its a sound and valid direction for our club to go into.

Again...at the forefront of this game  ( again we're showing the others the way forward )

Scenario: Daisy leads MFC to premierships, and more importantly plays 100 games in a womens comp. Jesse however, does not play his 100 games for the club - for whatever reason (I'm not trying to say anything sinister here).

Purely hypothetical obviously, but would the second coming of Jesse be eligible to be drafted by MFC as a Mother-Son draftee?

This is fantastic for the club and women in football.

 

I am a little bit confused however regarding Daisy Pearce.  We've very much put her front and centre at the club, but with the Women's League starting this year, are we certain she'll be a Dee?  Is there any proposed allowance for the MFC and the Western Bulldogs to keep our marquee players..?

I hope we keep Tayla Harris. That pic of her kicking style is iconic and should be used as a promo for women's footy.

She'll be commuting to Melbourne for those work days, and judging by what's been said this is just the initial stage and the club ultimately wants her full time.

Kind of demeaning to call it up "publicity beat up job", have you actually seen Cowan's credentials?

I never liked the "Old Boys" network that existed in some clubs which saw ex players promoted above their level of competency!

I expect to be howled down now bvy many as result being called Chauvenistic and Prejudiced but so be it. If these ladies have the qualifications then i HAVE NO PROBLEM! if not I would think we can draw whatever conclusions behind this move. As player welfare coach you would want to have a least a Graduate Diploma or Masters degree in theoretical and clinical Practice! IMV  FIRE AWAY ALL!

. Senior coach, WA youth girls and women's teams.

. Head coach, Melbourne's women AFL team (2013-15).

. Manager of her own national training company.

. Former state cricketer and golfer.

. First woman to coach Australian football at state level (2004).

. WA-based scout and match analyst for Geelong 2000-01 (voluntary).

don't be silly picket, her background is ideal for the role for which she's being employed.

 

i don't particularly like her doing it from perth, but i would hope she would be amendable to moving to melbourne in 2017 to lead our women's team to premiership glory at the same that our men's team win their first flag in a very, very long time in an historic double.

 

i think she'll add a huge amount even on a part-time basis.

Let's stick to facts , if you are going to appiont a person as "Welbeing coach" you would expect that their qualifications are a part of the selection criteria!

Any job where "Welfare" Welbeing is the central focus should have mandatory qualifications which cover that ground to which the job engenders.

I'll say it again IF the appropriate qualifications have been met then I have no issue!

McCartney and Byrnes are both development and welfare coaches. Neither have a welfare qualification.

Cowan has been a senior coach also, why doesn't that count then?

Again, you're starting to out yourself here, why are you picking on the female when it's exactly the same situation with at least 2 males who are already employed by the club?
