Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Rivers, Sylvia, N Jones given MFC Life Membership Awards

I can't agree. Life membership is for 10 years service. Col played for the dees for 10 years. Its not a value based award and doesn't cheapen the honor for Jones, or any one else, in the slightest. And jeez louise its not as if Col is an axe murderer

fair enough if you disagree

probably says more about us as a club back then that we couldnt push him onto greater things and when he didnt respond year in/year out, we didnt get rid of him. no way we should have put up with him for 10 years. Having a senior player that coasts through on the list does a lot of damage.

Some people think he left the club but I reckon as soon as Roos came he was keen to send him packing. And by god did he show his true colours at Freo.

More deserving than Sylvia I would expect!

However as life membership is given for 10 year service (I believe) Jack's still a few years away.

Jack would qualify at the end of 2018 I think. This year would have a massive bearing on whether he achieves it or not.

if he has a poor year then I think it's curtains for him at MFC and possibly in AFL.

Not a fan of Col but he was at the club for 10 seasons and played 150 games. IMO that should be enough for life membership. He was a stalwart of the club and if people remember, he re-signed TWICE between 2008 and 2012, despite the club being in the pits.

I don't think "not fulfilling potential" or "getting [censored] drunk every now and then" disqualifies you from being honoured for your loyalty.

Some of you need to lighten the hell up.

There is no doubt that Col loves the club and I thought he was gracious in his final season and making the move to Freo. You could argue that him leaving and netting us the early second rounder for Bernie Vince should make him eligible for an additional award.

Similarly I have no issues with Rivers moving to Geelong given what he put in and his strong performance during his last season for us. The Tom Gillies compensation may have cast a shadow over Rivers defection but that is hardly Rivers fault.

Having played for a club for 10 years and over 150 games?   Why does that not qualify you for a life membership?

Who then should qualify?    How can you tell who, are club men and who are not.?

Is it just the vibe? or because they left due to free agency?

Just wondering.

So then it becomes a value judgement made at the time by someone. Does not work like that you do the time you get the award it is that simple unless of course there were serious problems with you at the club and then it might be withheld. Simply not liking someone ain't grounds to withhold the award.

In all honest how do you know what sort of "clubman" either player was at the time they  played for the MFC?

From the outside they appeared fine to me.

I would think the club would know who the club men are, I'm guessing the ones that volunteer for everything, go the extra mile for the club, stay behind to work on their deficiencies someone that puts the club first.  Can you see Col doing those types of things, maybe Rivers but Col?

Where did i say i didn't like either of them?  I made sure i did nothing of the sort.

Do the staff get life membership awards?

I was making the observation that this was not a reason to withhold life membership. I did not say you did not like them.

Put simply Both qualify so they are now Life members whether I think they are worthy or not makes no difference.

Well as said Col re-signed twice while we were cactus, with offers from other clubs.  He also spent a significant amount of time representing the club at the childrens hospital brightening kids days during their bad times iirc.  He's not the or our messiah, and he could have been even better than he was, but he contributed for 10 years.  Thanks Col (and Riv and Chunk).

Sylvia was a good player in the Bailey era and serviceable, albeit frustrating, under Neeld.

I accept that 'Life Membership' for someone like Col seems a bit of a stretch but people have short memories.

No, he wasn't.

No, I don't.

There was a reason I was happy to wear the abuse and call for him to be traded each year after his first few seasons.

And they get the recognition that they deserve.. but we are not talking about Volunteers.. We are talking about players that represented this club for 10 years.

And for your information Col did a lot of behind the scene work with Royal children hospital and would give up his own time to go in and cheer up sick kids and spend quality time with them. In fact he won some off field award at the Best and Fairest for his charity work through the club.

Yet people are too quick to sink in the boots about his off field behaviour.. Nobody is perfect....

To be fair Dazzle, with regards to off field behaviour, it's safe to say Col sunk the boots in first....

Look I get the criteria but when I read on twitter that Jones got it I thought great he deserves it. Each week he gives everything out there and leaves nothing behind. I mean look he played with that serious neck injury for most of the year. Then he posts on twitter how much it means to him to get life membership and how he loves the club and cant wait until next year.

Rivers no problem with it. He won a rising star, and was great for us down back and consistent. I didnt know he was snapped up by the pies as a development coach. Good on him.

But Col, my god the man said himself he didn't always reach his full potential. So frustrating and not a number 3 pickup.

It has nothing to do with reaching his full potential nor what draft pick he went at.   I just don't get the hate on here.

Colin was well paid for his 10 years of service.

I am not suprised he signed 2 contracts during that time, easy money considering the work he did on MATCH DAY...(which is what he is paid for really) the rest is just off shoots of that...

No other club would have offered him the security the MFC did...A Basket Case taking care of a Basket Case...Col sort of summed up that whole dark time to me

Never got out of 2nd gear...Like the Club

But Col will be the one partying the Longest and Hardest when the 13th Flag is won

Free Booze....You Bet....

Call me petty but while happy for Chunky and Rivers, can't say I get any joy in seeing Col get life membership. Got selected more on potential than performance, was a lazy selfish footballer who would have been shown the door from a real football club years before he was by ours.

that said, half of those bagging him now vigorously defended him when each year the few of us called for the clown to be traded

Great post, not petty at all.

Life membership has now been cheapened.

The double edged sword of PR spin.

If it's an automatic 'play 100 games, get a life membership' then give it to them as they walk or the door. No alarms, no surprises.

If you want to use it as a positive PR 'announcement' 2 years later you'll cop the value judgements, positive and negative.

The constant social media involvement thing is not all upside. E.g. The 'Jesse's going to sign long-term' thing has gone from an instant positive to a questionable negative,

All three deserved their life membership. It's for ten years of service and it would be churlish of the club to decline giving the award because players left to play elsewhere. Fittingly, Rivers and Sylvia get their awards when they've retired from the game.

In addition, if anyone has a problem with either of the two who finished elsewhere then consider that they were products of our club and, as a result, we might have contributed to their failings or perceived failings in some way.

Col Sylvia Nice fellow, But a poor mans nothin as a player.By the nuthin I'm talking about,..

  1. The times he seemed to be on the cusp and the cusp broke
  2. The times he threatened and that was about it
  3. The times he could have won us games consistently and sadly all too often, disappionted
  4. The times when he needed to take responsibility and make good decisions,.. Well we are still waiting just ask Freo.
  5. Not even a flawed genious just flawed!

FWIW Life member for Col Sylvia???

Whatever for??

Just like years of poor coaching has contributed to Watts being the best kick and decision maker at the club. Sorry WJ but I'm tired of the that train of thought.

[censored]. utter [censored]. And i don't say that lightly.

I can't believe the hate for Col. Bizarre. 150 games for our club. 150 games. More than 10 seasons playing in the red and blue and he deserves vitriol because he didn't reach his potential and was a party boy? he cheapens life membership? Really?

Adam Yze, Russel Robertson and Travis Johnston. All life members. All players who it has been argued could have got more out of their talent if they worked harder. All party boys apparently. Do they cheapen the life membership?

It appears that you have to be popular amongst demonlanders to merit a life membership these days.   If that's the case give CP5 and Jessie theirs now......They are the most promising and popular players and they deserve it.   It doesn't matter that one has not played a game or that the other has played just 20.

Sometimes the mentality of some of the posters on this site just gives me the shits.    Time for a drink.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
