Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2016 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch

A brief reading of that draft suggests that the experts at AFL Draft Central aren't up with the latest. They have Melbourne taking Oscar McInerney with their third pick which looks reserved (unless something unusual happens) for the Josh Wagner rookie upgrade. They also have GWS matching a bid for academy player Max Lynch who hasn't been nominated as an academy selection.

I like the fact that one of McInerney's strengths is that he's clean below ground level.

What are your thoughts on Darcy Cameron 'Chaser'?

I know 'Angry' has brought him up before and we are in need of another ruck option, particularly one who can kick a goal.

Will he be available? are there better options?

Hard for me to make too much comment on Cameron as I haven’t seen him since he was draft age a few years back (2013?).  I understand he spent more time forward in the WAFL this year and added goal kicking to his CV. Ruck forwards are a somewhat rare commodity, so I think he’s a good shot to be drafted this time around and clubs in need could take a punt from around the third round onwards. He may have covered this in ‘Angry's’ thread on Cameron, but

@Pennant St Dee would probably be able to give us more on Cameron as our WA based draft watcher.

I hope we don’t jump too early for needs sake, as I think there’ll still be a good amount of talent available at 47. The best available ruck options (both mature age under 18) are all likely to need time to develop at Casey, so comfortable with taking whomever gets through to our pick in the 60’s.  McInerney wouldn’t be a bad option, but I’ve liked the look of Peter Ladhams from South Australia.  He has a fair bit of talent, but apparently some off field issues had recruiters questioning attitude.  He appears to be trying very hard to change minds, and could be a value pick. Ratugolea from Murray is an exciting athlete, but is very raw and unlikely to ruck full time at the next level (mainly due to his height which I think is only mid 190’s), but I can see clubs taking a punt. Draftable late as a forward ruck.

Rowan Marshall is one I’d be happy to take as a mature ager.  Has shown a fair amount of development over the last year or so and has shown ability in key posts at both ends of the ground. His mobility is quite good, so his versatility might give us some cover and depth in multiple areas of the ground.

Max Lynch from Murray/GWS Academy is the other one who has shown flashes up forward as a ruck, but is very raw. IMO 47 is too high for all of those guys.

Think it was wise list management to retain Cam Pedersen as a fwd ruck, as I get the feeling whichever ruck we pick up in the draft period probably won't play much at AFL level in 2017.

Darcy Cameron has become a forward who can rotate through the ruck since his draft year.  He was very 1 dimensional prior to missing out in his draft year and has worked very hard on his one on one contested marking to become that big forward.  Meth Coast and Freo will be looking at him with picks 40 & 54.  I am not sure he will be available at pick 47 and I am not sure if he is that we should use this pick on him, given the fact this draft seems to run very deep and I really like Zac Fisher, Luke Strnadica & Liam Baker as WA boys who may be available with this pick.

Jeremy Goddard is another ruck from WA who was the main ruck option for WA in this years championships.  He was very good at centre clearances and around the ground as a pure ruckman, he doesn't have the upside that English has with regard to foot skills and mobility nor does he impact greatly with regard to contested marking for a boy of his size. Goddard is a very big boy and probably needs to do a fair bit of work on his tank and fitness to impact around the ground but he is potentially a very good long term target if given time to develop.

I am sure the FD will be all over exactly what they are looking for with regard to a Ruckman or a Forward ruck and they will have plenty of options

Super work from Brett. Great to finally see combine stats included (where available) and some footage. Getting more impressive by the year.

That said, there's not many I love in that bunch.

Harry Morrison, Bailey Morrish and Isaac Cumming were 3 who looked nice prospects as guys who can run and carry and use the ball.

I'll be keen to read 1-25 and see if there's anyone towards the back end I hope lasts until our first pick.

Thanks PSD, knew you'd have the lowdown. I'm a fan of Fisher as well, wouldn't mind us taking a flier. You see much of Bradley Fullgrabe from the Swans & Matt Taylor from Perth?

Sorry Chaser haven't seen as much Colts this season with Junior and Amatuers commitments.  I know the Fullgrabe family and they have plenty of footballing pedigree but Bradley is not one I've seen a lot of

There seem to be quite a few 192 cm key defenders in the 40 - 60 group.  I'd like to see us take one who can run and kick, then keep him at Casey for a year or two and turn him into the tall mid we are crying out for.  Our second pick is probably going to be a project anyway.

You can see it here but I doubt whether anyone on his list falls all the way to our first pick at #47 or whatever -

Snoop Dog's Melbourne selection -

53 Melbourne – Esava Ratugolea / Murray Bushrangers / 194cm / 94kg

Gap between his best and worst is significant. Must remember he is raw talent and hasn’t been playing that long. Really athletic type whose leading patterns are going to need work but he has the speed to create distance between he and his defender and he can take a mark. Usually a pretty good shot at goal but been times when he is really wayward such as the champs but I kind of think nerves got a hold of him. If doesn’t work out as a forward he has the ability to play some different roles but at pick 53 a guy that can play forward and ruck might be a good choice. Bit bold but Melbourne usually are. They need some more depth in this area though.

Who else – Thought long and hard about Darcy Cameron here as a mature option and Mitch McCarthy as a development prospect.

# 70 Melbourne - Tony Olango / NT / 197cm / 82kg

Bit of a fan of this bloke and behind English is probably my best ruck prospect. He is really raw but he ticks a lot of boxes. Incredibly athletic, good leap, good endurance and speed and can be effective when the ball is on the ground. Seen him dodge through traffic like a mid and he seems to use the ball within his limitations. Will take time but he has a few things to work with

Who else – Oscar McInerney

And, saving the best for last - Quigley's draft rankings:

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/quigleys-2016-draft-rankings.1152444/

Spot on even if one doesn't agree entirely with his rankings. I like his thoroughness and he's very close to the mark in his assessments of those players who I have seen play either in person or on replays of Natuonal Under 18 championship games I've seen on Foxtel.

For those who think our # 1 priority is a developing young ruckman, Quigley's pick 50 sounds a reasonable option.

Ive paid very little attention to this years draft. . We seem to have changed tack as to how we will go about filing roles and places on the list.  Im all for that.

Its always been my impression that just about the hardest position on the ground to recruit is Ruck. Its a dark and wonderous science is picking a ruck.  But is is with interest I read about Goddard. With good mentoring and tuition he might fill the role with some aplomb , after some time..

Thanks Jack

We'd be lucky if he slipped down that far, imo.

Might be the classic " we're very happy to welcome him to the Melbourne Footy Club. Very surprised and yet gladdened that he was still available with our pick"

Does happen ;)

Yes, which team will be the first to utter "we could not believe he was available at our pick" this year?

My money is on the Dons with Hugh McCluggage!

The Phantom Drafts and Top 20 and 30 best player lists are coming in thick and fast but of course, many Demon fans aren't interested because our first player selected is going to be around number 50 and possibly a smokey from out of left field.

However, some are saying that this is going to be a somewhat deep draft with one or two highly thought of players drifting down to that level.

It's going to be interesting to see how things pan out and I wonder how close Emma Quayle is going to be to the mark -

Emma Quayle's Top 30 draft rankings

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
