Just dropped in after about 17 pages of absence. Looks to me like a shiPload of electrons have been sent flying around the Internet and made absolutely no impact on their targets.

Why?  Because he is a good bloke,  who tries hard and is a good club man. If he isn't up to it, the way we'd like him to be,  he will get repaved when better players take his spot. When Watts stops getting a game this team will have seriously improved.  Until then he offers a better on field option than many other available options while at the same time offering off field value.

Watts is one of a group of players that we need to see real improvement from if we're to be any hope of making finals.

For me our biggest weakness is our inability to find the ball on the outside enough, it's the root cause of a number of our problems. Ball movement will be faster and more efficient if the right guys are getting it on the outside, that will mean more inside 50's and higher scores. Watts would be a weapon if he can get his hands on it 20+ times a game. Last season our leading uncontested possession per game player was Jack Grimes who would too often go sideways or backwards or give off a dinky little kick. We need to get the ball to blokes who'll take the game on.

Watts, Salem, Stretch, Lumumba, Grimes and Melksham. These are the guys that will decide if we play finals this year IMO. If 4 of these guys can average around 20 touches a game and do it playing with urgency and taking the game on while finding plenty of handball receives, we will play finals next year.

FWIW I think our contested game is developing nicely and will only improve as Viney, Tyson, Brayshaw and Oliver develop.

I don't need to see Watts crash a pack of spear himself at a ground ball contest because we've got enough of those players.

I would however be happy to witness a higher intensity and fierceness shown in his tackling efforts. Some of them have just been plain lame over the years with his general tackling technique poorly executed.

Good post. I'd add that we need those players you've mentioned to, in addition to getting 20 plus touches a game,  run and carry more and deliver the ball long and accurately into our forward line. This is a crucial element to breaking the modern high press that most teams employ. The Hawks are brilliant at it

When we did run and carry from half back last year we looked dangerous. Ironically one of the few who did it with any regularity was Brayshaw, who as you say is more an inside player. Lumumba and the Melk will no doubt be encouraged to play that role.

I made a similar commitment last season about  Watts needing to average more than 20 touches a game. Sure he needs to attack the ball more etc etc but i think that area of his game hides his real weakness, which is he doesn't get enough of the pill. In the six full seasons he has played the highest average disposal is 18.53 in 2012. As you say he has to get that to 20 plus to be the weapon we need him to be.

Lumumba had a shocker last year, I expect significant improvement this year. 

Unlike you and others I haven't written Grimes off yet, just like I never gave up on Nev Jetta. Grimes played ok last season,  his confidence is still shot though. When he gets the ball his first thought is to not stuff up, so he takes too long looking for the safest option. He needs to think less. I'm not sure he can get over the scars of his career so far but if he does he'll be best 22 for sure.

Well it comes down to a few things. 

If you consider them all to be best 22, then they all must lift. We've been carrying passengers for years. We can't have depth until we have a best 22, and at this stage I think that is still undecided.

A lot of people keep referring to Jetta as a player who came good. Let's keep that in perspective, he plays back pocket, yes he plays his role with great efficiency but his role is concentrated around shutting down his immediate opponent, not setting up play coming out of defence. His role at times requires him to be more reactive then proactive, I say that because yes he thinks and puts himself in the right spots by reading the play but at times all small defenders can do is follow their man around. Players like Betts, Wingard, Rioli and Stevie J are so hard for defenders to play against because half the time they don't even know themselves what they're about to do. Jetta's disposal is serviceable for the role he plays, it's not elite nor is he kicking them out on the full. I love his aggression and attack on the ball/ball carrier. He tackles to hurt. Grimes is entering his ninth season and still struggles in a major way with two fundamental basics of the game, disposal and decision making. His defensive capabilities are sound but it's not enough, not for the position he plays and not after 8 seasons. Midfield isn't an option not even as a stopper. I think this is Grimes last year at the club possibly in the AFL. I'd be very surprised if Richmond wants him. If we have minimal injuries he'll be lucky to play a game in 2016. H takes the game on, has aggression in his game, offers some run but after nine seasons his disposal needs improvement. He also goes missing for large periods of games. He has two seasons to go on his contract then he can go too.
