Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If you look at vision of games from the mid-60's to early 70's you'll see the goal square and surrounds were covered in shredded paper, streamers and toilet paper (used as a streamer. That's why I mentioned in an earlier post that we'd raid all the toilet blocks around Yarra Park for toilet rolls.

Occasionally (when the 'confetti' got too deep), the goal umpire would endeavour to clear a path for the full back to kick out.

Probably a good thing that it doesn't happen now!

But why?

I think the shredded paper followed on from the streamers. In my youth it was common for people leaving by ship to throw steamers to those bidding farewell (on the port).

Confetti was thrown at weddings (a big no-no now). It was a 'celebration thing'.

There was no concern for the environment in them olden days.

OK, I remember Graham from Parkdale. Must see if I've got any photographs.

You probably look different now, fifty years on.

Nah, haven't changed a bit.

As they say in the classics, 'you're only as old as the woman you feel'.

Interesting. Feels very foreign to me.

I learn all kinds of things on these forums :)

G'day mate. I'm Graham (originally from Parkdale). The only people I can remember are you, Ken Baines and Malcolm. I moved down the West Coast and rarely got to games from 1966 until 1984. I've hardly missed a Vic game since (and catch a couple of interstaters each year).
In the 80's we sat behind the cheer squad who'd moved to Bay 12 (?) top level in the Southern Stand and sat with John Hartman, Animal and Gibbo.

We need to catch up. It's only been 50 years!

I remember Animal. haha

That last game in 1976 was when Laurie Fowler was knocked out by Wearmouth in the first quarter in front of the outer ground. I remember he was carried around the boundary line on a stretcher to a tumultuous ovation from the demon faithful down the outer wing. Clearly inspired the fans and the team on the ground as our victory guaranteed the filths first wooden spoon. Collingwood coach? - Murray Weideman!! Also I remember that it was reported that our Bobby Skilton was hammered by meat pies as he walked around the boundary line in front of the "social" club at the end of the game. In terms of "match day" experience, I reckon this one was up there with 1987 at the western Oval.

This is such a great thread! Love hearing all these old stories.

I used to chuck torn up paper in the air after a goal as a kid in the early 90s. One day a steward came and took our bag of paper of us so that must've been when it was phased out.

I would've loved to have gone to all the old grounds but only made it to victoria park, western oval and prince's park before they stopped using them. Also Kardinia Park but that's still in use (the trip down there last year was pretty fun).

Can I ask why you were all sleeping outside the grounds on Friday nights?

Great stuff guys i was in the cheersquad in the 70's as well, remember most of those guys now that names have been mentioned they were great days even if we didn't win that much.

Some of my memories are meeting early in the mornings of gameday at the G to hang up the banners, having a little fire at the back of the old southern stand to keep warm some mornings, used to take home a banner sometimes to open it up during the week to help air it out and dry used to roll it out along the footpath always loved the MELBOURNE - MASTERS OF THE MCG .

The cheersquad used to sit on the wing in the old southern stand , remember we played either Collingwood or Essendon cheersquad a couple of times and we won :) also the 1976 game at vic park, was so upset at missing the finals that year and a big fight in the field in front of the players race after the game the collingwood supporters were going off, Steve actually walked with me across the ground so nothing would happen to me, think i was about 14, good man ( still think Carlton lied down that day so we didn't make it !!! ) but also ripping up phone books during the reserves game to throw whenever we kicked a goal, the old duffle coat with Robbie"s name on the back and the old material cheersquad badges that mum had to sow on .

I still have it, my son wore it to the merger match when i thought i would not have a team anymore , lots more i remember thanks for starting this thread so long ago but have brought back great times even if we didn't win that often and why i love this club so much :) .

Can someone please tell me - who was the other person in the cheer squad ?

I am trying to think of the guy with long blonde hair who used to lead the cheer squad during the games. I well remember animal and the grog squad. They would put a few away too.

Hey Old Demon Me.  That banner lasted a long time if it was the original. We made back in the 60's up a mates driveway and when we lifted it up after drying we were in trouble as it printed on the ground. We had a room in the pavilion where we stored the banners but if they were wet we took them home to Carnegie and hang them up on the railway line fence the next day to dry. A real effort to take them to the next match on the first train along with bags of cut-up paper. I'm still trying to work out how to post old photo's of the cheer squad.

Hey MT64 if it's a bit hard to upload the photos on here you might find it easier to upload them all to a website like photobucket or Flickr and then post the link on here

You need to give MT64 a bit of slack,  he is not as fast as some on a computer and he is worried that the silver emulsion on the pics will stick to his computer screen when he posts them.

You also need to remember the photos are in a shoe box and not on a stick  just takes time for an old bloke.

His memory is pretty good though for things 40 years ago maybe not for last week !

Just had to drag the old coat and have a look , loved it , wish they still wore them added some atmosphere.

The Victoria cheer squad was different with all cheer squads combined, was fun but not the same as your own team, no tribalism

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
