Pretty accurate but can't agree with McDonald. He's played better games in the last few weeks and was made to look better by Dunn at times.

His disposal was again pretty shaky.

Overly generous IMO. First half was unacceptable, last quarter and a half was excellent. Nifty Nev and Dunn the best for me. Without them it could have benn ten goals at half time.

His kick to Frawley in the second quarter was one of the highlights of the game.

Not many players on Melbourne's list can kick the way he does.

I rated his game from the start.

I love Watts. I want him to succeed. But he does not know how to use his body to protect space; even when he is in a position of advantage.

I'm not a Watts knocker pal. In fact I'm 97 positive; 3 negative for Watts. I'm objective and have an opinion; and if you don't like it, it aint my problem.

I think he usually protects the space pretty well, it's just the ball isn't often kicked well to him.

He is a genuinely good kick and knows it, which is good to see him getting confident.

Only mistake was that he lost his feet, that said he competed well in most marking contests.

When you look at the replay, look at 2 contests.

One where he went laterally towards the MCC members.

The other in the last with 3 minutes to go, down the Southern Stand toward Punt Road.

He's gotta learn to use his body to protect space. He allows the defender to get too close to the pill when he has not right to….IMO.

I tend to agree that Watts needs to learn to use his body better. On a couple of occasions I felt he could've either stuck his mitts out for the overhead grab instead of using one hand to bring it to ground (which he does a bit), or on another he was in a great position to work his man under the ball but couldn't.

Having said that, he is one of our most important players. He has a seriously valuable disposal and set shot, he is also working extremely hard at the moment picking up possessions all over the ground.

As he continues to mature he will learn to use his strength and his size, and will begin to find to ball more often (another 5/6 possessions on a consistent basis would seriously lift the team performance).

He plays like a basketballer. At times this can be advantageous - ie. that intercept goal at then end was classic basketball play. At times he will be criticised and he has some weaknesses as accurately pointed out here but overall he gives us a bit of class and x-factor. That is not a bad thing. He will probably get better at those things that frustrate but it's worth focusing on the positives. It's what a good coach (Roos) does, but what supporters, for the most part, are unable to do. An Essendon supporter nearby was doing the usual uneducated Watts bashing yesterday and we gave it to him while Watts (with perfect timing) nailed that shot in the 2nd quarter. The guy shut up.

Yes good to see him taking responsibility in asking for the ball after a mark by Cross just outside the 50 late in the second quarter and slotted it from 60 meters out. It was a critical goal and gave us some momentum going into the second half. I think he could take the game on like that much more than he has been. I think George Stone has been a tremendously positive influence on him in that regard. I still think over the next 5 years he will join the AFL elite and be a much more influential player than NicNac Edited June 16, 2014 by Dees2014
