Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Amazing how a coach can instill confidence in a player. Its almost like "I'm going to play you for the next 4 weeks. You don't have to star but just do these 4 things and you will keep your spot"

A bit like Watts said recently "do your role". Once players understand they are only required to do a certain number of non-negotiable things they can relax and hopefully flourish. And not get punished for the odd mistake.

Go Nev. Have always thought he had shown a bit but he was never settled in a spot.

Jordie McKenzie is the next on the list to join this group I reckon. He was exceptional on the weekend.

Agree he played well.

Love the way you always manage to throw in that bit of support for your man Jordie.

Perhaps I will do the same for mine, jack Grimes. Thought he has played well lately and especially sunday and that goal. It nearly made up for the one he missed from much closer in.

Agree with this. Bennell has better height, pace and skills and had advanced further earlier. I thought Nev was going to be one of those players caught in the middle. No height but also no speed. So no good as a small defender and no logical alternative position. I was frankly surprised they kept him and didn't rookie some others. How pleased I am to be proved wrong. Bring it on. But it makes you wonder what Roosy would have done with Bennell.

I'd love to find out how much of this improvement is due to Roosy and how much is due to Rawlings. Roosy seems to be the consummate communicator on simplifying the game and giving players roles they understand and execute. I wonder if it is Rawlings who gives them the role and Roosy has shown everyone how to communicate it. Whatever it is, it's working a treat. Nev and the rest of the back 6 were unbelievable on the weekend. Mind you having one of your first full pre seasons has got to help a player not blessed with pace.

Can't be doing Rawlings any harm when the discussions are going on about Roosy's successor.

Go Nev. Have always thought he had shown a bit but he was never settled in a spot.

This is as close to fact as I can get after talking to both Nev and Jade Rawlings, Roos wanted midfield depth, and unfortunately Nev was squeezed out but 'promised' a rookie spot, based on Jade Rawling's assessment of Nev's last six weeks at Casey last year. Jade has always been a fan but Nev could never get a consistent run at it through one thing or another but Jade thought he at least deserved another chance

Nev had his first break from footy without the necessity for a post season op and trained over the break to arrive at pre season in his best shape ever, he again did every single session of the pre season and started the season in the best nick physically for five years

He went to Casey, promised by Rawlings that he would play in his preferred position in defence, he also went relaxed with nothing to prove and decided to just have a real crack and enjoy playing footy again, his form was outstanding in the first few weeks and forced his way into AFL team

Roos instruction to begin with was to use abilities, his hardness, agility etc in a lock down role and KEEP IT SIMPLE, once he had his defensive side locked down, like the rest of the team he can then start to use his skills in offense, especially his short kicking and agility in traffic, exactly what we are starting to see now

Nev appreciates the simplicity and the fact that he has a role that doesn't change week in week out, just the opponent, and actually tries to nominate who he would like to take on if he can, was licking his lips to have a go at Wingard

The fact that he seems to get a random belt from an opponent each week, notice Chapman got him this week, he wears as a badge of honour because it means he is doing his job

Sad that we don't get to see what Roos could have done with Bennell. Always rated him and was very disappointed when he was cut.

Not sure who mentioned it earlier about Nev's disposal efficiency, but I've just watched the replay and you're dead right. We all know he's not a long kick, but he puts them exactly where he wants them, and is confident enough in his ability to thread them into a pretty tight space. There was one kick into the corridor which he landed on a demon (Grimes, I think) with three bombers around him, but timed it so it was an uncontested mark.

That's a handy tool to have at your disposal coming out of the back half, especially when the opposition has flooded back into your 50 and you're chipping it around the back looking for a laser pass into a barely-free forward.

At the end of the day it seems to come down to this.

Roosy is one of those rare coaches that can get the absolute best out of his players

Nev, I think was drafted around 50ish, he's always had courage & the commitment, but maybe not the self belief. as good kids tend to be like. IMO he just needed the right gamestyle & teachers around him for him to grow.

Unaccountable and will always be soft.

Doesn't matter how many Lynden Dunn / Neville Jetta / Cameron Pedersen transformations they witness, football fans will continue to make foolish blanket statements.

(Also, inb4 "I called them as potential superstars years ago!").

This is very true. Despite real live examples being right in front of their face, some people will always write players off prematurely.

We are still seeing it right now with Blease, Strauss, Tapscott etc.

Then, if one if the above starts playing well they'll be all 'oh I was wrong haha' and write someone else off in their very next post.

yep, 'bout time we traded in the silk nighties, for blundstones & leather gloves, when footy comes to town.

Josh Fraser, Jared Oakley-Nicholls, Gysberts, Kane Tenace, Morton etc...

Doesn't matter how many players fail after never improving their short comings, football fans will always hope that certain players do....

Those guys aren't playing anymore and most were spectacular failures.

Jamie Bennell however is playing for West Coast and (incase you haven't watched him play in the last few weeks) is doing quite well, in a similar role to Jetta. Unaccountable and soft is the complete opposite of what I saw from him and he was in a similar role to Dunn, taking quite a few (some very courageous) intercept marks. If he continues like this he'll have a number of years over there at a great level of footy.

Bennell may have justified your description of him while at Melbourne but he's a different player at WCE so far. He's no Neville Jetta though.

Bennell's stats for the season, hardly damning for a small back: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pp-west-coast-eagles--jamie-bennell

Yeah. That was my point. It's easy to say someone might improve. Then when they don't they're moved on and no one bats an eyelid.

Bennell is doing pretty well. I watch every game, I wouldn't comment on him if I didn't.

But he's still unaccountable and doesn't go hard enough (is that better, PC brigade?).

I'm filthy that his name has tarnished this Nev Jetta thread.

May as well wonder what Roos could've done with Petterd and Addam Maric while we're at it.

As the thread suggests back in 2014 Neville arrived as an elite small defender.

This week, 3 years later, the media will finally recognise him.

It won't be any surprise to us.

Fair bump.

Neville Jetta probably saved the game. He's in serious danger of not being underrated after a highly visible effort like that. Either that, or he's in danger of being rated as highly as he should have been the last couple of years, but actually pushing up to an even higher level.

Alas, I fear it'll get missed because Clayton briefly looked in the general direction of a fence-side turdbag, and that'll go viral because #vapid.

Neville is probably ok with being underrated by everyone who has never actually watched him.

Neville's journey (to use annoying modern jargon) gives me hope for Gus to make a similar recovery from multiple early career concussions. If he turns out even half as good we will be on a winner.

Well done.

Can a Demonlander with the necessary know-how please compile a video package of Nev's highlights from today, and forward it to the AA selectors?  He was absolutely outstanding when the team needed him most.  If the whole team played with Nev's comittment and 'never say die' attitude at crucial moments, we would be unbeatable!

Wasn't named in the best by AFL.com.au, still somehow flies under the radar. Certainly not for Dees fans though.

I love that little guy!

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
