Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Jazz, It's Not Dead, It Just Smells Funny - Jack Jack's Jazz

Jazz, it's not dead, it just smells funny. A great quote from the great Frank Zappa.

I've recently dragged myself, kicking and screaming, into the new digital world. I purchased one of those new computerish fandangled phones. Now all the apps, trinkets, bells and whistles are pretty cool. But the major motivation was to have a convenient mp3 player that could hold more than 2.47 albums. So now I've been able to fairly extensively explore some different musical genres instead of the taste testing I've been limited to, and for some reason Jazz was the first thing I that appeared on my phone.

My father was brought up on Jazz and he loved it to bits. So every Sunday morning we endured his obligatory jazz record reminiscing. Somewhere along the way I must have taken a liking to it, or, maybe I'm just doing my own reminiscing. In any case I'm really enjoying listening to some different music. Jazz Rocks!

I'm no aficionado on jazz. I wouldn't have any idea on how to define it. So we'll leave it open to interpretation as to what fits. But jump on in, the waters just fine, and I'm interested to hear some new artists and songs.

I was going to title the thread after the Bing Crosby/ High Society Soundtrack song "Now you has Jazz" and make it my first song, but i didn't think it was hardcore enough. Instead I've gone for a song that generally get's a run whenever I start listening to that funny smell.

Edit: And a big up to macca for the idea.

Good on ya JJ . Thanks for that but you were the originator of the idea mate . I'll kick my contribution off with a nice little number from a superb jazz guitarist - Chuck Loeb .

Here's a great song I discovered from the film Thomas Crown Affair. The song fits into the finale of the film so well, I can't imagine the film without it. It's also hard to believe that the song was recorded nearly 35 years before the film.

If you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it.

I've included 2 versions. The first directly from the film and the second being the original full length song.

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen the film and would like to then don't watch the first version, from the movie. I know, the movie is 12 odd years old, but you just never know?

I think it's Jazz?

This track is by the one and only George Duke : Keyboard Jazz pioneer . Like most of the songs I will post on this thread, it's a bit of a toe-tapper !

The link to this track should play automatically . I found this music site has just about everything, and the sound quality is quite good . This song is called "T-Jam".

Thanks Macca - really enjoyed the Duke.

Here is one of my favorites, Les Mc Cann and Eddie Harris.Compared to What.

Word was that Eddie harris was booked to play the 1969 montreaux Jazz fest with the band but they hadnt had time to practise and ended up getting blasted backstage before coming on.Les told Eddie just to watch and wait for him to come in and do his thing. it worked beautifully and I never knew the original was on Youtube but have just found it.

Sock it to me!

Good stuff Macca.

And Franky I'm always a sucker for a good story behind the music, great tune too.

I mentioned this song in my opening post so I guess I'm obligated to post it. From the musical High Society. I must say that I usually don't take to musicals but this one was an exception. A seriously star studded movie with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Grace Kelly and probably a few others I've forgotten.

Some terrific and very memorable songs like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and High Society.

It can hardly be a Jazz thread without the great Sachmo. The guy had such an amazing and long career, playing up to 300 gigs a year!

I heard Louis Armstrong fairly regularly growing up. Both my parents were fans until my ma found out during half time (I can call it that, it's a footy forum after all) Louis would head back and have a few left handed cigarettes. That ruined it for her.

But as the great Bill Hicks said "See I think drugs have done some good things for us. If you don't think drugs have done good things for us then do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all of your records, tapes and all your CD's and burn them. Because, you know all those musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal f$#king high on drugs, man." Hard to disagree with that.

One of his big hits (I'd say second only to What A Wonderful World) was Hello Dolly. It's amazing what that song achieved. It knocked The Beatles off the top of the charts and made him the oldest person to achieve the number 1 spot (60ish from memory).

Herbie Mann in 1962.

It goes for 8 minutes but is Classic Soul Jazz.

If you do like it (it is after all jazz flute) check the youtube link to listen to Herbie Manns version of the Classic "Sunny". many versions of this song are available with the most popular being the Boney M disco version. Herbies version is truer to the sentiments of the song (IMO) even though there are no vocals. The song was written by a young guy about his older brother getting killed the day after JFK. Because he wanted to remember him in a happy disposition rather than a lousey disposition he wrote Sunny. One for Two Sheds jackson.

Just listened to both Franky . Excellent and smooth as . Knew that story about "Sunny" but had only heard the Buddy Hebb version and Boney M's until now . Good work .

I guess Im really putting up all my soul Jazz favorites and most of them are recorded during the Demons salad days.

Here is something not told in the movie Ray. Ray Charles was a Jazz boy genius before he took to singing R'n B.

On this track

, an instrumental, he plays both Guitar and Alto Sax. (around the 5 minute mark).

The back of my vinyl re-iterates how '50s jazz followers felt spurned (think Dylan going electric 10 years later but on a smaller scale) and never followed him down the road to Rythm and Blues.

How long blues is one i turn too late night in my cups at the end of each football year.

Nice work Franky & Macca keeping the thread going.

I scored a few Jazz magazines whilst in the states. When I catch up on a few uni assignments I'm hoping to pick up some new stuff from the articles/reviews.

In the mean time here's a bit of Benny Goodman.

Here's the theme from Marseille Contract/The Destructors by Roy Budd. A very cool funk/jazz/groove instrumental that reminds me of a Massive Attack song (Unfinished Symphony?)

The guy was ahead of his time.

Great tune. That one's going straight to the pool room.

Yeah, I've only just started listening to Roy Budd. But that song struck a chord (boom boom) the instant I heard it. Clever guy.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
