Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Great post WJ and thanks to Supermercado as well

For people like me who just love all this historical stuff it's just fabulous to be able to access these footy records .

The advertisements are great as well and they give us a glimpse of how our City once was - many of the buildings where these retail outlets were , still stand today .

The War years and the Great depression years will be fascinating reading .

Well done .

Yeah this is a great resource - have just flicked through some random ones and there is some great stuff surrounding the expansion to the national comp amongst other things. Have a number of these from the late 80's still in a box in the shed somewhere so could remember some of the ones from 1989 especially which used to collect and read through as a kid.

Wow. Heres one page I opened from 87 that was interesting. Average Home games attendance for the year. The Dees were second to Carlton. Gee we stuffed up didn't we? Were sitting in a great position - winning games, good attendances. WTF were the administration thinking or doing??

Here is a table of the 14 clubs and their average crowds for home games, including transferred games, this year:

Brisbane Bears: 10,081

Carlton: 29,049

Collingwood: 22,860

Essendon: 16,663

Fitzroy: 12,314

Footscray: 15,520

Geelong: 19,528

Hawthorn: 18,045

Melbourne: 27,014

North Melbourne:20,630

Richmond: 17,463

Sydney Swans: 22,005

St. Kilda: 15,659

West Coast Eagles: 24,349

The club was still running on the success of the 60s. People were getting excited about the Dees again. 2 decades of crap wasn't enough to make people forget how dominate the club was. Bit like the sudden surge in popularity of the Bulls in the NBA. No one ever forgets that success.

But the doldrums in the 90s and just complete and utter incompetence all the way through to 2011 almost destroyed this club.

Teams like Collingwood acknowledged their large demographic and grew from there. Melbourne just sat and expected to grow without any real effort. Looking deeper at our support base now and we have the lowest number of <16 year-old supports, lowest AusKick sign-up numbers. The club has failed horribly in the off-field department.

But you all don't need to be told that.

Cudi we were so bad in the seventies i assure you, that by '87 there was no connection to success at all....in the 90's we made finals.

from about 73-86 we were so poor onfield...i remember it all from school days like yesterday.

Check out where most of the teams in 1987 played their home games .

The Demons were nearly always fairly high up on the home ground attendances in the 70's and 80's . The reason was because our home games were nearly always at the G as opposed to small suburban grounds .

The Tigers were probably no.1 a lot in the 60's and 70's ( as a guess ).

And I reckon we may have been no.1 in 1971 - a non finals year ( though we did win 8 of our 1st 9 games )

http://stats.rleague.../seas/1987.html

Edit - checked the stats and we were no.1 for home attendances in 1971 with roughly 38,000 . Tigers 2nd with 37,000 .

38,000 in 1971 to 27,014 in 1987 is a significant drop , Tigers went from 37,000 to 17,463 so you could argue that we have the more loyal fans !

Remembering that we made a late run in 1987 as well .

However , it has to be said that I reckon a lot of neutrals went to the MCG back in the day and .............. venturing to a lot of suburban grounds was to say the least " An experience ". ( esp Victoria Park and Windy Hill )

We might have had good numbers through the gate in 87 but membership was putrid at just over 3000.

http://demonwiki.org/memberships

That is amazing! Even after 5 years of finals we only had 10k. No wonder there was no money in VFL Footy. Times have changed haven't they.

Yeah I remember during the 90's the big thing was to get 20K members. That then went on to 30K, 40K and now the base everyone is aiming for is 45-50K. Pretty crazy when you think about it. Costs have also gone up from about $100 which would just get you in to home games and the members area to now $500+ which gets you into all Vic games and gets you a reserved seat.

That's a great resource and very interesting.

Just off the topic does anyone have or know of anyone that has any original Weg posters especially the dees ones, maybe your grandfather or grandmother or an old family member might have some lying around in an old collection. I have been collecting these for years and need to fill a few gaps will pay decent money no matter the condition. SMS me if you or you know someone who does 0411580577 cheers daz

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
