Bailey certainly mentioned him as a possibility last year, after Grimey went down and Jareds form stepped up.

I love him myself, but just cant see the skipper being the last player onto the ground each week.

Actions speak louder than words and that is what Petterd is about I believe. I would argue that he would be one of

if not the most desperate players in our side. That in itself screams leadership.

Grimes was a leader in decent under-age footy, so there's one difference.

The coaches etc also reference his leadership in a way that I don't hear about Petterd, so there's another.

As an aside, the above doesn't mean there's necessarily anything wrong with H_T's call.

HT's call was fair enough also and that's why I had my say.

I understand why Grimes has been labelled with the term "leader".

I am simply saying that leadership possesses many attributes and not always and only the most obvious ones.

Bruce is an example. I don't think he was a leader 'on field' as such or in the way that he played. But we all know he

was one of the most professional trainers and his preparation was extremely professional also.

Petterd has great ability to get his hands on the ball. However, I understand he still has some maturing to do as a footballer. Not in the leader stakes in my opinion.

As mentioned its not a popularity contest, however they must be respected by their teammates. You dont want a captain who is 'mates' with the younger guys as no doubt they will get a rocket at some stage and you want them to respond and not feel 'hurt' when their big buddy has a crack at them. Greeny for me. Did captain an underage Aussie cricket side so must have something. And by far the hardest at the contest aka Viney Neita & Junior

Would like to see Col have a crack aswell. Flash is too unreliable on feild and too big a risk as such.

I appreciate where some fans are coming from on this. A few too many times for my liking Davey has given away 50m penalties or silly free-kicks that aren't even in play when he's been fed up with a player nagging him or bad umpiring decisions.

But the number of times Davey does something that only a true on field leader would do far outnumber the above indescretions. So often, pretty much every game, Davey will cut inside through traffic and make something happen. He will take the risk that no one else is willing to take to get us out of trouble and he has the rare skills to execute and finish off his excellent decisions.

The flashes of brilliance and magic early in Davey's career as a forward pocket and the stuff he can still pull off blind a few people to the amazing skill and understanding of the game he has. He's not your typical "brave" footballer, but he makes a hell of a lot of brave decisions that need to be made when moving the footy in tight situations, especially tough given the shocking standarad of some fo the teams he's played in recently.

There's plenty more off field that make Davey a great potential capatin, but I just wanted to stick up for his "on field" leadership credentials.

By the way, the way Jack Watts has the balls to cut in fromt he boundary line and look for the pin point pass in the central corrider in massive traffic and back his skills to pull it off remidns me a little of Davey in that regard. Watts also has some of that Scott Pendlebury / basketball awareness and skill in traffic to avoid opponents, keep his balance, and execute a subtle but viatlly important pass to open up space for team mates and start a scoring chain.

Anyway ... Davey for captain, Watts for greatness.

While Davey is certainly rated quite highly, I still think he is most underrated Melbourne player. He is vital to us. he really is the guy about whom I say "I wish we had two or three of him".

I'm not sure if it's a specific instruction, but if Davey is anywhere near you you just just give it to him, even under massive pressure in a croweded area, he will, 9 out of 10, get out of trouble and set something up, make us keep the ball. In that regard, he is the exception to the rule, even ifhe's man is right on his hammer, just give him a handball and try to block for him, he'll make something happen.

As for Watts, I remember the exact situation! I'm sure the next season or two will see Jack eliminate some of those decision-making errors and even more of the good moments will start to pop up. Improved fitness and body shape/size will also help with that. Eventually it will get to the point that Watts realises he is taller than most, can outrun anyone his size (well pretty much anyone of any size), and he'll start to make a huge impact on games, rather than the odd flash of class.

I agree that Davey is magic to watch and when he gets it its excitement time. The only issue I have is when he gets a heavy tag he does not get near the ball to do this. Hopefully with the emergence of Trenners & Scull etc he wont always get the #1 tagger.

Davey is so underrated on here. Easily the best MFC player over our dark years and people focus on his 50m penalties. Admittedly, I understand why it's being brought up in this thread but he is in "the thick of it" much more so than Green. As much as I loved Neita, he is evidence that it's not the best solution to have a forward as a captain (especially with our developing, weak-bodied midfield). Davey is well respected and wants to be captain, and Green has never forcefully put his hand up for the gig.

It could go either way and neither is perfect for the job tbh.

Its telling that we dont have enough options for Captain.

Neeld needs someone with all of the following qualities:

1. a consistent on field perfomer,
   
2. a consistent under pressure performer,
   
3. on field tactical awareness,
   
4. a good communicator on and off the field,
   
5. respect of his team mates,
   
6. intelligent with the ability to relay Neeld's message to the group,
   
7. capable of moments of on field inspiration.
   

So who ticks all those boxes?

Beamer doesn't. Chip comes close but may not be a natural communicator. Jones likewise but not yet an inspirational player. Grimes is yet to prove to be consistent due to injury. Russian? Trengove might be on the way there. Col, could be but keeps failing to live up to the promise. I can see why Green got the gig in the first place. In this situation I understand why Roos went for joint captains to get all the qualities needed and not to put the spotlight too much on one player. Maybe for a year or so we should do the same until there is a clear candidate.

Green cant lead. .. he may be a professional about footy but hasnt a clue about effective team leadership...evidence ? weve seen none and hes had plenty of chance to do so.

Davey. I used to really rate this guy but so far off the boil now. Would smack of some form of tokenism to appoint him now as hes not only shown no capacity to captain hes actually shown us just how he cant handle the next level of stres on the field
