Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Green I think will be our next captain. Make no doubts.

Davey will be a very admirable Vice Captain. Better than what Bruce was IMO. Although that might be sour grapes.

I believe in 2-3 years time when Greeny is wrapping up his career then Grimes will slot in perfectly.

Thats my thoughts.

I am inclined to feel Green will get the nod because IMO he does all his leading where it counts; on the football field.

I don't think Grimes as our future captain is as much as a "lock" as people think- Watts, Scully and possibly even Sylvia can have strong claims to that title too.

Yeah, he has turned his career around but...

I agree Gippy, but would not surprise if Moloney and Davey are co-vice captains for the different aspects of leadership they bring to the table.

However I think on and off the field Brad Green is the most rounded of all the aspirants - reliable, consistent, versatile, courageous, durable, classy, great finisher, leads by example, polished media performer and now club senior statesman (the last not being a pre-requisite for captaincy though). Davey and Moloney for mine don't tick ALL these boxes (not counting the last). Green does. The fact he won the Leadership award and Heart and Soul for this year, not only demonstrates this, but also shows how far he has come after his demotion from the leadership group several years ago.

He took that disappointment on the chin, learnt from it and has grown and developed both as a person and leader as a result.

Taking in all the above, I just believe he deserves it and has earned it.

I also expect Jack Grimes to step up to the plate when Green retires in 3-4 years. The only box he needs to tick above that isn't already, is "durable".

We are talking in another 3-4 years.. You don't think he could "possibly" be a chance if he keeps on the straight and narrow path?

No.

He would do well to be in the leadership group in 4 years time with Davey, Scully, Grimes, Watts, Trengove, and Frawley.

Several years ago, I played golf with a guy who previously worked for Leading Teams. He was also a close friend of the person placed with Melbourne at the time (from memory - Jim Plunket). James McDonald had recently been appointed Captain and I asked him what he thought about the appointment.

He explained that the days of the coaching committee picking the best player are well and truly behind us. Whilst the players vote, it is not like a 3,2,1 Brownlow scenario. Instead they (and the coaching staff) rate the players on a series of individual Key Performance Indicators. Once this is done it becomes apparent who should captain. These indicators are often different to public perceptions.

At the time, he mentioned that Junior was the most important appointment that Melbourne made as part of their rebuilding with a young list strategy. A similar process also saw Tom Harley appointed ahead of more talented or more fancied teammates at Geelong.

He was very complimentry of Stynes & Co and the culture that Melbourne were developing. I am confident that whoever is appointed will be the best decision for the club and not necessarily the person who the wider community expect.

Nick Maxwell?

Seriously, who saw that coming at the time..? It was a rumour, but a silly sounding one at that.

And I can't imagine any other filth player being able to fill the role even adequately.

No 18 is on the front cover of the club's magazine, now called Heartbeat. The caption is Brad Green Steps Forward. Suggests who might be Captain.

Davey was the only current player involved in the video explaining the new Melbourne emblem.

The magazine cover, and headline, says it. It's Green.

Personally, as much as the romance of an indigenous captain appeals, Green is the better option. His form, his willingness to put the body on the line, his strength in the air, his reliability as a target for our blokes and his finishing are first class.

Davey is already enough of a target for the opposition and has enough to deal with.

And yet, I would say that Davey is more of a clubman than Brad.

Not meant to disparage Brad; Aaron is obviously heavily invloved in the club and the youth coming through.

They will both do a good job.

I don't see Aaron's behaviour on field as embarrassing the club. May be the making of him on field.

As it also might be the making of Brad - from a professional to a professional leader.

You are setting yourself up for the cynics with that observation ;)

They will tell you that it is because he won the Bluey and to an extent they would be correct... however, as I stated in my earlier post above "...but one thing that some may have overlooked, and which I think has much more bearing on his chances of stepping up to the captaincy, and that is the fact that on that same night he also won the Ron Barassi Jnr Trophy, otherwise known as the Leadership Award. And on top of that he was also awarded the Heart and Soul Player Award."

hmm. now junior has retired i think it should be Bruce.. oh wait he left..

Even if he stayed and half the team left he wouldn't be captain.

His leaving just proves he was never a leaders exit ring.

Green deserves it – the guy is a champion. The onfield leadership he showed last year was incredible. He was always stepping up when we needed it most, and our team hadn't had that for quite a while. Maybe he isn't the buddy of all the younger guys, but I don't think there's a mould you need your captain to fit into that says they have to be. He is just so obviously our captain on the field that it would feel wrong, for mine, for him not to get it. Davey is a champion as well, but I just don't see him being able to do the team-lifting things when they are needed like Green.

Really?

Because if there was one player over the last few (sometimes) dark years that lifted other players and fans - it would be Aaron.

Green was fantastic last year and you are only as good as your last year, but let's not forget what a bloke wearing 36 has done for us during some tough times.

I hardly ever post here but it must be Brad Green surely?

So why do I have a sneaking feeling that he'll miss out?

Chunky Jones....for the leadership group at least....he's heart and soul Demon

Jones is a good point. I'd love to see him in the leadership group.

Brad Green, Aaron Davey, Nathan Jones, Jack Grimes, Brent Moloney and James Frawley...anyone?

I think the leadership group is player driven and the skipper is decided by the FD with a reco from Leading Teams.

Maybe Rivers in the mix.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
