Maybe this is what Dean has in mind, maybe its not but it seems more than a coincidence that he is suddenly moving toward youth. With the whisper that Mcnamara may play on the weekend is this the case? Seems there are only a few spaces to fill here for what might be a good team going forward.

well mate I know this much for sure as little as we have seen of them, what they have shown us is a hell of a lot better than anything Newton or Jamar have shown in their years on the list. This is foresight only but Dean bailey must have a plan. In terms of premierships I believe it is as simple s this, and that Bailey will be that ruthless when the time comes that he has both the robustness and depth in his list. Bate looks terribly slow ATM, more so than ever......... to be continued I guess

Don't get me wrong, those players have potential from what I have seen and can tell................but whether we can build that potential into players of a premiership calibre is a tough thing to know.

If you follow a team that hasn't won a premiership in 45 years, judging the footballing ability and assessing the mental capacity of the players on our list (old and new) seems like a pretty good place to start. Of course we can't categorically make calls on players who we have seen little from but surely testing your skill as a footballing follower to project the likely or even possible future of individual players and our list as a whole is a worthwhile exercise - certainly one fit for a footballing forum that should have as its core business the promotion of discussion.

Maybe, but it's not a bad start. Sure, the 21st and 22nd best players in the premiership teams of the past may not be pivotal and in some cases barely AFL standard but comparing the most influential 12 - 15 certainly is an exercise well worth the time.

Where do I start? You've said 'no' to three ruckman - Meesen, Johnson & Jamar without listing Spencer (rookie) as well. You've also said no to the likes of Bate, Dunn & Buckley who are still developing and learning positions. Too early to right them off just yet IMO.

And half the list nearly have N/A to their name. Either we haven't seen them yet or we haven't seen enough of them.

Truth is, they could all possibly contribute in one way or another if things fell into place, but there is too many variables in reality.

If you want to be serious about players that can win a premiership for Melbourne, you must identify how long away may it happen? My estimates are perhaps anywhere between 5-10 years away. Which is why I stated I don't think Bruce & Green will be around for the tilt. That may seem as a shock to you & others, but I'm being realistic. There is alot of changes to the Players List in that time. New recruits/draftees. Retirements and trades. Career ending injuries.

Also i'm not sure how you can give Watts an N/A but still put him in the team while Blease and Strauss get N/A's but don't get in? I'd have those two locked in for our next premiership side.

Completely agree with that.

Build that core of 12 to 15 is pivotal including hopefully the development of your top 4 to 6 into or near stars. The 15 to 30 is not as critical but you want to ensure that they are at the least capable competent and competitive footballers who fulfill a role for the team.

I think you're spot on.

THis sort of exercise is imho pointless as there are at least 7 players that aren't on our list right now, that will fill spots in our next premiership side.

I agree. It's a ridiculous excercise because premiership teams are made up of players with varying degrees of talent and qualities.

An average indvidual player in an average team can actually play an important role in a premiership team. Stephen Gilham is a case in point.

Melbourne currently sitting 4 wins and 4 losses seem to be fielding their strongest side in years with the inclusion of boom recruits Tom Scully and John Butcher. Liam Jurrah comes back into the side after kicking 21 goals for Casey, a VFL/VFA record. Tom McNamara unlucky to miss out. Coach Dean Bailey was seen licking his lips in anticipation of the Watts Butcher combination

Im not really too sure why some think this an irrelevent exercise or more the point one of no merit.

As I read it the question is..who on thelist would you think participatory in a premiership team.

It probably has a time window of the next 4-8 years.. but its open to the reader.

I dont see this as hard..nor teh idea of a yes and no and too simplistic, in fact its really a yes /no situation otherwise you could add in an infinitum of qualifiers.

DO I see the following as part of a Premiership team? I will use only one conditional alternative.. i.e where insufficent is known/seen but relying on extrapolating what we can reasonably summise...and that will result in a "possible"

There are as another alludes .."gaps" on Baileys preferred starting team..these will be filled with whom ever we can draft or trade for over the next 2-3 years.

I would not expect a serious tilt for 4 years.. but see us as an entirely resaonable prospect then..REALLY !!
