Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Father/Sons - Garry Lyon

Because thats EXACTLY what this is mate. A forum for people to write about football.

I asked if anyone knew how old Lyon's kids were and if they are playing footy?

What was wrong with that?

This is a real BIG footy topic...

No it's not. It's quite appropriate from time to time to question the possibility of potential Father/Sons coming through.

Don't like it, don't contibute.

Crap! been told he is a Gun

How many games did David play?

how old is he? there was talk of reducing father/son requirements now that the bidding system has come in... could be as low as 20 games to qualify...

Not 100% sure but I think he does have a son who is at St. Kevin's with Tony Liberatore's son.

Dont think he's in the same year as Liba, i play against him n grinter isnt in the same team

Heh heh.

We'll be the last team to get a decent run at the top draft picks before Gold Coast and Bogan take all the early selections.

Then we'll have half a dozen father-son selections to keep the wheel turning.

Dream the incredible dream.

But imagine the horror if, say, the Gold Coast just kept on outbidding us for a F/S selection, Is there an upper limit - eg, once you've committed a second round selection or better, you can't be outbid any further?

the club can only bid once... they essentially go around the table and ask the clubs about each father son player, and which selection they would be willing to give up to draft that player...

they are then committed to use that pick on that player, unless another club outbids them, or the father/son club agrees to use their next selection... they don't have the option to bid again...

Ah ha.

That's reassuring that we only have to use our NEXT pick AFTER the other club's nominated pick.

Meanwhile, the list of father-son selections is pretty impressive. I guess it would be given that historically they are all players anticipated to go before the third round.

Matthew Richardson I didn't know about. Or Matthew Scarlett.

C'mon all you Vineys and Stynes and Lyons and Grinters and Lovetts and Tingays and Smiths.

Hmm... how would another round of Febey twins go with the father-son rule? Two bids? Or could we get both with one?

ideally you will have lots of F/S selections in the same draft. that way, even if 2 or 3 are worth a 1st rounder, you only have to give up the 1st rounder for one of them, then 2nd rounder for the next etc. because even if another team offers their first rounder, we only have to use our first available...

Potential Father/Son selections are discussed in the media regularly. Any potential draftee confronts the same scrutiny.

You're being precious and naive all in one. Even if your sentiments are noble.

Demon3, I sort of understand what you're saying however I think you've taken this discussion to heart too much. From your posts you appear to know the family reasonably well so you're obviously emotionally attached to the topic, nothing wrong with that. You just have to remember that this topic will always be discussed amonsgt footy clubs because of the father/son rules. If the young lad isn't interested or up to it then his performance will reflect accordingly and no further discussions will take place.

Unfortunately for the kid his father is still in a high profile job in footy so even if we restrain from posts he's always going to attract media attention, especially if he performs well over the next couple of year.

On a personal level the thought of a skilled version of Todd Viney running around in a Melbourne jumper is a dream come true, Viney was one of my favs and I admired and respected him greatly.

Just try not to take these topics too personally and respond to them in the spirit that they're meant, we're not wanting to put too much pressure on the kid, it's just hard to not get excited about one of our past greats' sons playing good footy. Just imagine this place when Lyon's kids hit 16!

I understand that, but Mate your missing the point, its fine when the kids are 16 or 17 and into their footy, these kids are 10, 12, 14 years old...

i hardly see a 14 year old as apotential draftee.

D3, i'm largely with you.

Personally i'm fine with the question of whether he has sons and what they're doing, but i think that's almost where it should finish unless they are rated 16-17 year olds. Commenting on how a 13 year old is going in his school footy is hardly talking about a potential draft opportunity, just because his old man was good.

Plenty of good players have kids who want to do other things, just like plenty of parents who do other things raise kids who are great footy players.

A LOT can happen between the age of 13-17, and the only point i see in people claiming them as potential draft material is for someone to raise their own ego in an attempt to say "i told you so"

Not to mention that you should never question a player before you've seen them, i think a 12 year old should not be judged on AFL prowess when there is so much more to life

It's a lot harder to get a game at AFL level now than it was 30 years ago. It's not surprising most sons don't make it.

Given the vast opportunities presented to people in a society such as this, and that children are not inherently like their parents, it's not surprising many kids probably wouldn't want to play AFL

Be more excited by Jack Viney at Ashburton Juniors. He wins all the B&F's, is tough as nails, but supposedly with better skills than his Dad. He's meant to be an outstanding prospect, but much can happen between now and when he's eligible to be drafted.

He plays under 15's.

You're a very smart man.

Not bad going - Lovett didn't quite make the cut, but pretty good otherwise. Any thoughts on this Saturday's lotto numbers?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
