    FIXTURING, HOW UNFAIR

Very subtle ... this fact proves to be an eternal question. It is a bad as touching umpires and getting away with it.

    Jake Melksham

It was just a matter of waiting for his game to return such are his skills and endeavour. This year, he has turned the corner in the last two weeks, and this is far earlier in the season that it was last season. And, I ask, how good and valuable was Melksham's end to the 2017 season? It was bloody excellent!

Post Match Discussion - Round 9

And the Hawks are down on their game this weekend, as well, despite incredible coaching. Reckon the injuries at the Crows will be highly significant in our win next weekend - and it is time to play Garlett for that one.

Post Match Discussion - Round 9

Why do the umpires (supported by the lip-flapper commentators) continue to award inappropriate free kicks to players like Cripps, Dangerfield, Ablett, .... and so the list goes on. How many times were the MFC players held when contesting, pushed in the back, screened when positioning? I gave up the count in the first quarter yet it continued all game.

Maguire cannot think straight with worry - Queen's Birthday is going to be a Demon rollercoaster and he knows it! These are the best possible images for supporters that watched the game. Highly commendable across the field, all day.

Viney's little mid-week speech to the press helped in this regard: celebrating every goal and hurting for every score against the MFC.

    Changes vs Adelaide

Fully agree. Smith was good, three times. Pedo has more in that fwd utility role.

    Changes vs Adelaide

Still, Bernie was a little out of sorts today and his kicking in from fullback was nerve wracking. Salem did some good things but could not handle the physicality very well - hung back a few times. Give Bernie a rest for a week; put in Pedo if this is the game plan we intend to persist with as it would suit his utility function in the forward line. Maybe, just maybe, bring in Hunt for Salem for one week of his own redemption - his pace is still needed. Garlett might be needed now that we have discovered deep forwards behind the defenders.

You are forgiven. I worked it out last night and expected an 8 goal win with the 4 pts - blew my percentage arithmetic away.

Post Match Discussion - Round 9

Everyone contributed, enormously and we really went for the ball with a 'biff'. Melksham and Harmes never gave up. Gawn was brilliant and so was everyone else. Feel sorry for Pedo, as his game would have been a highlight today. Garlett, too. Still, we needed the percentage and we blodddy well went out and got it!

    Frankston v Casey Demons - Round 7

Sounds like he did another 'save the game' effort for the team - as he has done in crucial moments of games in the firsts so often. He does give, doesn't he? Low profile, great skills, dependable and there as a team man.

    Frankston v Casey Demons - Round 7

The Sunday morning hangings in Changi, Singapore, were bad enough! The Frankston game will be too much to bear. oops, game over - hadn't noticed - and it was a slaughter! Carna red n blue.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 9

We all did, we knew the outcome in advance - saving face for the AFL and keeping Carlton strong as possible. Full stop.

My 3 word pre game analysis V Carlton

Adelaide weather this arvo is cool, sunny, clear after some early morning rain. Should be fine in Melb tomorrow for the game.

    WHO IS THE BETTER #13

Problem is, we could go way back on this one, players now virtually unknown. We have had some rippers, so many rippers. When I learn to manipulate time - through the realisation that time travel was discovered simultaneously at different points in history - I would love to field such a Demons team with the majority of players coming from the period 1962 to the present, and to play this team against the Filth at the MCG on Queen's Birthday, with Harry Beitzel as the sole umpire. Now that would be a spectacle!

    WHO IS THE BETTER #13

Yep, the Oooze was phenomenal and I would guess that even Betts learned how to do trick shots at goal by watching him.

Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 9

How sad for Carlscum ... it would almost break your heart. He'd heard that Viney was after him, obviously.

    BEST TEAM IN MY TIME

It is agreed that freakish ability is the lesser of the comparators in any case. Longevity added to the contribution and its consistency is the best measure of worth to the Club. Stynes was an example of that aptitude. As was the great Robbie Flower and Neitz. Jakovich could be included categorically. It is also agreed that Oliver is the most outstanding midfielder we have had but the game has changed so much that this comparison can be rendered meaningless to some: I recall quite vividly how superb Hassa Mann proved to be as a midfielder (centreman) with many more years of impeccable contribution than Oliver has chalked up so far. With the changes in the game within the modern era, these game changes have enabled Oliver to impart different skills sets to different roles of the midfield, eliminating Hassa from the current perspective yet not detracting from absolutely elite performance criteria.

    BEST TEAM IN MY TIME

Jakovich was not a midfielder - he was a full forward. It is therefore difficult to compare him with Oliver, and possibly inappropriate. For example, before his knee injuries (and he 'came back' to play until retirement), the Ox was a forward and was better than Jakovich but he played at CHF mainly and so, it would not be valid to compare him with the game qualities that Jakovich contributed to the MFC - just as it would be invalid to compare Jakovich as being a CHFwd in the role of the Ox.

    Clarry vs Cripps

Just wonder if Lewis can do it again? A man of his experience and football know-how will be familiar with ground revisited. It's still the same target (jaw), at the same location, elevation and physical topography, so I reckon we could set him a task for this weekend and he would not need a map and compass to triangulate such an impact, surely?

    BEST TEAM IN MY TIME

Agree with you, CBDees, there are heaps of players who would compete easily with the newbie teams, if not surpass many of those in the past thirty years. I could list them, but for heaven's sake, it would also be unnecessary as some of the newer teams listed are just fantastic. What I see as surprising is that Neitz is at full fwd so often; he was better and best at CHB. How could you separate Ingerson and Sean Wight and Icke at CHB anyway? This problem arises out of the need to consider 'the best', and exists all over the ground. The only two that I could think of as being ahead of the pack for their position were Flower on the wing and the Ox at CHFwd.
